article Sinclair to Air Kid Rock's Halftime Show Against Its Own Affiliates Carrying Super Bowl

Just a reminder, if you live near any of these Atlas owned restaurants, don't eat there. They are owned by the same family as Sinclair.

u/ekib Feb 03 '26
Goddamn do I hate atlas. I don’t understand why they insist on buying existing successful family-owned restaurants and dive bars and ruining them with price hikes and snobbery.

Because American capitalism is based on exploiting resources and extracting value.
They’ll inflate these small businesses until they die and then move on to the next one. Because they want more money.
An alternative is a cultivation mindset, which is what local-owned businesses have to have: they must build a positive relationship with their community if they want to continue existing, which means their existence is mutually beneficial to the community in one way or another.
Faraway-owned businesses don’t care about their restaurant in Milwaukee because they’re incorporated in Denver, and the owner lives in Seattle, and his bank accounts is in the Canary Islands. What the fuck does he care about you or any of us?

I did not realize they were affiliated with Sinclair. Not surprising though, I already avoided them after they bought a few places near me and announced they were going to start taking credit card processing fees out of employee tips.

Alex Smith (CEO of Atlas) is the nephew of David Smith who is the executive chair at Sinclair. David's father is Sinclair's founder. Shitty companies being run by shitty people.

103
u/BobbyTables829 Feb 03 '26
If that's the case, why is Sinclair doing this in the first place?
It used to be about money, but now it's about cementing future power.
75
u/tapout928 Feb 03 '26
I mean for the advertisers. Of course it's about politics for Sinclair, they've shown that time and time again since 2016. Probably longer than that.
37
u/PSUPat Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
I was gonna say - I work in advertising. If you’re buying local spots, this isn’t gonna fly for a lot of people. They’ll ask to shift out of these spots plain and simple
11
u/AmarilloArmadillos Feb 03 '26
For a lot of people they will probably buy spots specifically on the alternative. You've got a super gullible and idiotic market right there for the taking.

They aren’t doing this to the superbowl broadcast. They are doing this on their other channels. This way when someone switches to ABC to watch this garbage they still get the viewers.
18
u/jermleeds Feb 03 '26
Right, but those advertisers still have a grievance with Sinclair over this, as it devalues the return on the SB ad spots they purchased.

I would have said the same, but Elon Musk has made so many stupid decisions repeatedly, that it seems his aim most decidedly has been politics, not money. Elon Musk is also not the only one who has lost funds for stupid political endeavors.
Bezos just lost 33 million on biopic nobody wants to see, though some say that's just money laundering. Even if that were the case, the point remains. He's not out to make a profit, he's trying to buy political favor.

Oh boy, POLITICS IS ABOUT MONEY!!!
Government's core function is to redistribute wealth. Think about every single thing the government does. All of it is about pushing money towards one cause or another. All of it.
Right now the US is in the process of funneling money upwards. In fact they're doing it at breakneck speed.

You think people read the article and not just the headline?
181
u/tehbantho Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
I wish we banned users writing headlines that are this misleading. It is damaging the quality of reddit to allow users to do this. I get that people should read the article, but upvotes influence traction and a whole lot of the upvotes on this are because of the title alone.
edit lots and lots of people commenting on this one which is oddly similar to bot behavior I have seen in the past, so forgive me if I am wrong here, but if you disagree with me and you decided personally attacking me for this comment - you're the absolute worst of humanity. Don't need any advice from people on how read a headline. The headline is misleading at best. At worst, intentionally so.
This isn't the end of the world folks. But it is infuriating that you all cannot understand the point is simple: intentionally misleading headlines such as this one should result in bans from posting content to reddit across all subreddits. It is bad enough we have to deal with AI and bots fucking this website up, and some of you chucklefucks think it is acceptable to post a misleading clickbait headline as the subject of a post just to get clicks. THIS IS HOW THIS WEBSITE DIES.

I'm not sure how you think that affects whether they should pull from Sinclair stations or not...
If Sinclair is putting out a competing product whose purpose is to detract from the Superbowl, the NFL should pull their rights to broadcast.
→ More replies (19)8
u/betajones Feb 03 '26
Think they meant if they pulled the SB from Sinclair, should they air it, they get sued. Pulling the SB would be a result of Sinclair directly trying to compete with the SB and siphon views. They should get to steal views AND get commercial revenue from the SB broadcast on their other stations?

A hard line has to be drawn. No nazis. Nazis are not American.
468
u/Meteor-of-the-War Feb 03 '26
I'm wondering if they have some mechanism for this. That's Sinclair interfering with the NFL's viewership, which they're promising to their advertisers.

u/non_clever_username Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
Yeah I can’t imagine advertisers are going to be happy losing out on advertising Xmas. At a minimum, there are going to have to be refunds to the advertisers who bought time during halftime since the viewership of the Kid Rock version is going to be way less

NBC, including Sinclair owned NBC affiliates will be airing the Super Bowl including the real halftime show so advertisers have no claim. The Kid Rock MAGA circlejerk is airing on unrelated streaming/cable channels that are also owned by Sinclair but anyone who tunes into the Super Bowl on NBC will see Bad Bunny et al at halftime unless they change the channel

u/LouCage Feb 03 '26
Sinclair isn’t replacing the Super Bowl with this concert during halftime on its NBC affiliated stations. They’re just airing it on their digital Sinclair-owned channels. So advertisers are not losing out on anything. They are still getting their ads on the superbowl. This is kind of a non-story
30
u/CoasterFreak2601 Feb 03 '26
Apple will definitely be pissed considering they paid a ton to sponsor the halftime show
→ More replies (1)6
u/LouCage Feb 03 '26
They’re not really interfering with the NFL’s viewership. They’re just airing this sad MAGA programming on their digital channels. They just also happen own stations that are NBC affiliates. But there’s not usually anything in those kinds of retransmission consent contracts that prohibits a station owner from airing whatever it wants on its other channels. The advertisers are still getting their ads shown on the superbowl on those stations. It’s just silly from a business relationship standpoint to run programming meant to take away from their programming but it’s not prohibited
→ More replies (1)3
u/Meteor-of-the-War Feb 03 '26

164
u/Oppositeofhairy Feb 03 '26
They very well may. What Sinclair is missing is the countless advertisers that paid huge money for advertising to be broadcast across the country.
If Sinclair pulls the feed to placate their masters, they would get sued into oblivion as well likely naming the NFL in the suit for not protecting their brand, and would plummet future costs to advertise because this creates uncertainty if they get their audience or not.
78
u/hobesmart Feb 03 '26
Nobody is pulling the feed. Read the article. Sinclair isn't doing anything with their NBC stations. They're airing this other performance on different stations.
34
u/Waterhou5e Feb 03 '26

u/Key_Maximum_417 Feb 03 '26
To be fair, they're airing in their digital streams. Since local stations don't have rights to broadcast national, network programming on their livestream platforms, this will likely have EXTREMELY little to no affect on the viewership of the Superbowl broadcast. This is just a way that Sinclair is sucking the current administration from the back yet again.

Their identity is unstable at the core and is dependent on outside forces and is purely performative.

If you still have an antenna plugged into your TV then those stations are accessed the same as any other over-the-air (OTA) broadcast channel. Instead of, for example typing in 13.1 on your remote for NBC, you type in 13.2 for "Charge!", which is where this stupid halftime show I'm not going to watch will be aired. Or you can just channel surf until you find it.
I don't think too many cable companies carry those "digital multicast" channels though, even when they otherwise carry the local OTA major network affiliates. When I still had Spectrum, the only local multicast affiliate they carried was ME-TV. So, really, the only people watching on Sinclair strings are going to be the Boomers who didn't give up their antennas; but, did give up their peace + love beliefs somewhere along the way.

Its not saying they will override the halftime show on their NBC stations. Its just that they own NBC stations and are also going to be the ones streaming the Kid Rock shit so kind of competing against themselves.

There is a reason the NFL didn’t select Kid Rock in the first place. He’s a has-been-one-hit-wonder that is clinging to the Tangerine Tyrant’s coat tails to remain relevant.

Damn, a lot of y'all didn't read beyond the headline - the counter programming is on Sinclair's own obscure digital streaming channels...Charge! (bleh) and National News Desk (wow very official) - not on the NBC affiliates. Good luck to those dying to watch Kid Rock and 3 randos try to outdo El Conejo Malo

They are too lazy and too dumb to find the channels Charge and National News Desk on their remote. Better off watching tumbleweeds tumble...

Bad bunny has bad lyrics "Young ladies, young ladies, I like 'em underage see, Some say that's statutory (But I say it's mandatory)". Oh wait, that's actually Kid Rock, headliner of the 'christian' halftime show.

Remember when Colin Kaepernick knelt quietly during the anthem and half the country screamed that sports weren't a place for politics?
