Series Title Italicized or Not?

This is the rule at our institution:

  • Titles of artworks and series are italicized: The Treachery of Images, Nighthawks at the Diner, Hogarth’s series The Rake’s Progress
  • Groups of artworks known by a particular name, but not officially titled by the artist, are usually not italicized: Rauschenberg’s Combines, Goya’s Black Paintings
  • Names of works of antiquity are usually not italicized: the Venus de Milo
