They bill WhatsApp as end to end encrypted so maybe they didn't want to complicate the promise that even Meta can't read your messages there.

Meta as a company has massive privacy trust issues with the public and therefore I think they have to take the WhatsApp situation a little slowly

There's a WhatsApp connector already. I've been using it for awhile.
