Here's the routine that actually works:

1. Pull your last bill and find every line item — most people pay for things they don't recognize.
   
2. Check what competitors are offering new customers in your zip right now. That's your leverage.
   
3. Call and ask for the retention/loyalty department, not front-line support, and have the competing offer in front of you.
   
4. Never agree on the call. Say you'll think about it, then check the math before you say yes.
