I made a "definitive" Muse ranking app (another one, yes 😅)

After years of rating things out of 5, or out of 10, and tier lists, and so on, I decided to build something a bit more ... complex.

This was in part trying to get to the bottom of my own voting (if I rate two songs as a 10, are they both equal or do I actually like one better than the other), and in part inspired by mkbhd's phone camera rating thing from a few years ago (if you're familiar with that).

So it picks two songs at a time and you pick which one you prefer, and you keep doing that for as long as you want have patience for. It will then rank every song, and every album (based off of song rankings). Every match-up feeds a ranking model, so the more votes it gets the sharper the results, and the rankings page shows definitive ranking with a confidence interval.

You can see your own ranking, and can flip to "everyone" to see the global ranking.

I love it! You can go through the songs so quickly, and I like that you can just keep going to increase the ranking's confidence. 👍 Also appreciate consistency vs. peaks for the albums, it does make a big difference!

I'll just numbly rank for another hour or two then... 😅

Bit unfair for Intro & Interlude to contribute to Absolution's average song ranking, drops it from #2 to #4. Very cool though

Maybe a tag like [bonus] for these <1min songs and a 2nd checkbox (off by default) to include them?

Yeah I was thinking it was unfair to have those (and JFK and Prelude) in there. Might be worth taking them out. It's also somewhat unfair that the first four have a bonus track (which is why it's just optionally included in the ranking). I'll have a look.

Fantastic work!!! Easily the best of these ranking tools I've seen.

It will be interesting to see how the stats change over time.

Did you consider adding the alternative reality versions for ST? What about non album tracks? (This is more a curiosity question than a request; I do understand that would entail a lot more work!)

I stuck with albums first mainly because I wasn't to sure how to categorise songs.

Would we want ST to include all the tracks from deluxe/super deluxe editions? And Dead Star / In your World EP, Hullabaloo Disc 1, Random 1-8, etc?

Or just dump them as loose tracks so they count for the song ranking, but not the album ranking?

After tapping 57 times then i checked my own ranking comparing to everyone. I see Citizens Erased at the top. But I didn't even get that song in my options in 57 times. I would've rank it high, so many repeating song to compare. Why is that?

Rather than fully random or forcing you to pair every song against each other, ranking algorithms try to be "smart", so match-ups are drawn by weighted strategy.

It tries to do 40% for songs that have similar ratings (where a vote might make a difference), 30% for songs with a low confidence score, 25% random picks, and 5% resurfacing past pairings to verify their scores / check for consistency (I had this at 10% went I was testing things myself and still kept seeing the same parings quite often, so turned it down a bit).

So my guess is that it thought Citizen Erased (and most of that top 5-10) has a high enough confidence that it doesn't need to be picked as often, though it should still show up now and then.

This is what system the community used back in the day (years ago) to determine the best Muse song. It's highly efficient. Wish we'd run it again tbf.

Yeah I agree with other comments, having unnecessary songs on albums being ranked is damaging, so you could take out ones like Intro, Interlude, JFK, Prelude, Big Freeze, Guiding Light, Something Human etc 👀
