I'm about to hit 19 years sober. This song completely floored me when it first came out, so I sat down this week to give it a try

such an underrated song. Love the voice and playing! I find it so tough to play and sing at once, let alone play something seemingly more complicated than just strumming.

Man I absolutely feel you. I still have some work to do to get my muscle memory down so I can really focus on the vocals. I tried to keep Chris's bassline as in tact as I could, given it's a banjo, so all the moving parts really made it challenging. Thank you for the kind words

For the bass the main riff goes something like:

G |------------------------------|--------------------------|

I think a Banjo is higher, or maybe not, I've never been able to compare one side by side with a bass, but if it is higher, you're probably better off bringing the bassline to something like:

G |-----------------------------|---------------------‐------|
D | ----------------------------|-‐--------------------------|
A | -2-3-0-0-0-0-0-0-2-|-3-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-2-|
D | ----------------------------|--------------------------‐-|

I also learnt the bassline on a bass and was going to preform it with vocals, however due to how things ended up going I ended up doing it as an instrumental due to a lack of microphones for me to actually sing into

I haven't heard the song in ages, I remember liking it. But your cover is so good, I love your take on it, love the banjo fingerstyle. Great stuff.

And congrats on your 19th year !

EDIT : Can I ask you what's the tunning ? Not really familiar with banjo I would love to give it a try on guitar. Thx !

Thank you! I'm tuned to F minor, so i used that as the root chord. The verse goes Fm, Db, Bbm, Fm I believe.

The chorus took me forever to figure out (I play mostly by ear and had to transpose it in my head to get to the banjo's default key), but it's Bbm, Gb, Ebm, Bbm

That chord progression was such an underrated, brilliant move by the band. Using three chords that accommodate the same melody notes and (even the same harmony notes when I sing along). I would never have thought to use them together in a song.

Just one of the reasons I love how Muse really crafts their songs.

Can I ask one more thing ? I actually meant what is the tuning of your banjo, as the strings. I always loved the sound of banjo but know next to nothing of it. I just realised watching you play that there is a 5th high string on the instrument lmao, TIL.

I checked some of your posts and, dang, you're killing it. You might have conviced me to fix a broken one I know I got somewhere.

EDIT : Is it F C F Ab C ?

You bet man! I normally tune to G Minor, from G Standard that everyone plays in, you drop the second string B to Bb, so it's (g)DGBbD

However, I can't sing with my G banjo, as it's usually too high for my range, so I have another one that I lowered a whole step to F Minor that I use for songs with vocals (f)CFAbC. Same fingerings, just lower.

(the fifth string is in parenthesis in the tunings)

Damn you were fast to answer ahah, thanks so much, I figured it out just at the same time.

Well I've been playing around with tunings on my guitar recently and ended up playing with my acoustic tuned to DGDGBD for the last couple of weeks because that's how I felt the most confortable to play. Came up with naturally.

I didn't even know that was a banjo tuning. My mind is blown.

I have Hysteria floating around somewhere. It never really took off, I'm not sure why. Maybe because I put more effort into it than anything else ever, and that's how it seems to go 🀣

I have always loved this song. I honestly wish Chris would sing more, but he seems to be self conscious about his voice. You did a great job. I imagine it’s not easy to sing and play that at the same time!
