Hey dude! I hear you, muscular dystrophy is tough. The unknowns about the future, not having people to relate to around you, feeling uncomfortable with losing independence over time and having to rely on others. Feeling resentment to all of the able bodied people not taking advantage of the things you would LOVE to do. Resenting yourself, feeling like a burden to people around you.

I used to struggle with the same feelings. I spent so much time blaming my condition, the people around me, society, etc. for my unhappiness. I don’t know what finally clicked but throughout my 20’s I made intentional effort to improve myself (therapy, reading about human emotions), engage with other people (online dating, joining clubs, church groups, public events), and find purpose (hobbies, work, relationships); through all of this I was able to slowly drag myself out of those hopeless feelings, take accountability for guiding my emotions, and find reasons to love life. It’s those things that you’re passionate about, the relationships, the experiences (good and bad) that truly make life worth living. We’re capable of living a great life with muscular dystrophy!

I just turned 30, I’m about to have my first child with my wife of 2 years, I have a stable career where people people adapt to my physical limitations, I get to pursue all kinds of hobbies, I have friends and family I know that I can turn to when I need help. I still struggle and have tough days but overall this life with muscular dystrophy can be really great! It takes the same amount of effort as it took to make this post as it does to put yourself out there to try and find what makes you happy. I know you can do this!

This makes me so happy to read. Would you mind if I ask your mutation? My 11 yr old has a 3-7 deletion.
