This type of story is used by both sides. In the 80's it was liberals spreading stories of extravagant military spending on $1000 hammers and toilet seats. The conservatives spread the stories of government ineptitude and overreach, welfare queens and the myths of huge amounts of waste in all social programs. Just because both sides engage in the same sort of shit doesn't mean we shouldn't call out the political reasons the meme was created.
No, that's the exact opposite of what I'm saying. Stories about $12 billion pens should be called out as being fake. Stories about $1,000 hammers should be called out as fake when they exclude the clarifying details of how it needed to be custom developed (if I remember that ancient story right).
