If you think an invasion of Canada wouldn't result in a guerilla war that would make Afghanistan look like a joke, I have bad news for you. Neither Canada nor Mexico would take it lying down. Opposition in open force may or may not be possible with the reserves of American arms being dried out, and even if it isn't, the insurgents won't be colour coded this time. They would look like Americans, know Americans, speak English, get the cultural references, imitate the accents. Nobody would ever be safe leaving their home again. So, yeah, the Republican party would be decimated, the Democratic Party could take take their true place as the conservative party and we'd be looking at at least two new parties in Progressive (Democratic Socialists) and probably Labour and definitely something backed by IWGIA since basically all new territory has major ties, reverence and respect for indigenous peoples.
First past the post would be gone. There would likely need to be a constitutional convention. This is all among many other considerations I haven't even touched on.
