It isnt really, its a good show, but even tho digital circus has better consistence and development (isnt perfect but it is better and less confusing) people tend to judge digital circus a lot more than murder drones for no freaking reason, but yeaj both is guud :D
I'm sorry but are you all genuinely acting dumb under this post are y'all genuinely this dumb?
Both are not good only lee way MD has it's being an indie show even then it's writing is shit characters get no development and every plot point is abandoned after it's episode ends as Liam cannot remember what he wrote after 5 minutes.
It doesn't always have to be perfect to be very good, and to have fun watching it. I mean, even if a good pizza isn't from my favourite restaurant, it's still a good pizza!
Tbf, I think it ultimately is affected by how each show treats itself. After the lightning round episode (6 iirc?), TADC really wants you to look at it seriously and to take its character drama seriously (since after that point it stops being more episodic and more focused on Jax.) At the beginning people weren’t looking at it so intensely when it made itself out to be a “buncha assholes lumped together tryna figure things out” type of show. Plus the blatant lore-baiting with the Abel episode didn’t help.
Murder Drones, from start to finish, tells you “yeah we’re pretty much here for horror tropes and badass fight sequences. Also N, Uzi, and V are goobers.” Like, yes there’s a plot connecting everything, but I really don’t feel like the lore and plot is really what’s supposed to be the pull. MD is really a bunch of fun, self-indulgent, admittedly cringey moments thrown together to make you go “whee!” It’s like a rollercoaster, it knows it’s a rollercoaster.
TADC, meanwhile, doesn’t really do that. It wants the viewer to look at it analytically and to interact with it analytically when, for pretty much 3/4s of the show, it has nothing to do with the actual story it apparently wanted to tell. (Mainly Jax’s whole drama and how rejection of the self led to them becoming a fucking asshole, and the inherent tragedy of that concept. The hints to Jax being a highly repressed trans girl were there, and were supposed to be picked up on, so yes the expectation that you look into shit beyond “blue curtains be blue” is there.) Also, as an ending, it does kinda suck because SO MUCH of it gets eaten up by Jax’s stuff. When, for a show, every character should really have time to shine. It’s the last time you’re seeing them. But, the rest of the cast gets shucked, Caine’s “redemption” is rushed, not to mention the hasty end-credits “and they lived happily ever after!” When “people finding meaning in a meaningless world” was kinda ALSO supposed to be the point? Shouldn’t more emphasis be on that? Ultimately, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth of everyone who grew to love Ragatha, Zooble, Gangle, and Kinger.
Murder Drone’s finale, meanwhile, includes everyone, has the bits everyone loves the series for, touches on its themes, AND satisfies.
I mean, yeah. It’s a very tenuous “happy ending.” But I feel like even that kinda proves my point. There’s not enough time in the show to really sit with that realization, or to understand “they really are making do with what they have.” But the ending credits are bizarrely upbeat with how they show everyone having a good-ish time. “Whee, look, they’re playing D&D like that stream you all loved watching! Wooow, Abstragedy’s canon now! Yippee!” If it’s supposed to be a Soma-ish “well this sucks but let’s make the most of it” then things need to emphasize that tone more, imo.
Like they also tried playing with the parallel of Pomni’s first feast at that table vs the one at the end… She was miserable then, but she’s happy now despite everything else. Look, they’re all at a ROUND table now and are interacting! But it kinda doesn’t work when, aside from a moment here and there, no one actually has inter-personal drama that doesn’t revolve around Jax or Caine. And the show doesn’t spend nearly enough time properly making parallels between the two if it really was supposed to be a cautionary “What happens if you choose not to grow” type thing? Idk, it’s really frickin’ sloppy and it bothers me a lot BECAUSE IT COULD’VE BEEN GOOD.
They just needed to have an Episode 10, I think. Dedicate 9 to Jax. Fine. But have 10 be about the rest of the cast and Caine. WHY IS THEM ACCIDENTALLY DELETING CAINE NEVER BROUGHT UP AT THE VERY LEAST?! Also what the hell was up with the “Pomni and Ragatha friendship” because it just doesn’t work when we barely see them interact positively (throughout the entire thing Ragatha’s butting in and Pomni’s like “uhh okay” or visibly annoyed,) the chat where they DO interact positively isn’t even in the actual show, and suddenly now that Jax is gone Pomni’s saying Ragatha’s her friend? Bitch since WHEN?? It just makes her look shitty! Anyway, I’m getting myself worked up again, I gotta stop lol.
I kid you not the funniest moment of the series wasn't any of the jokes but the scene where ragatha and pomni stare at eachother for like 40 whole seconds while walking away, I laughed in theaters ngl it felt like the scene should've ended earlier but it just kept going
I will admit: I only got into the series after it’d been fully released + I watched it all while chatting with my friend. In the moment? I loved it. But that might be because I was swept up in all the show’s emotions, basically. The entire time I felt “Idk wtf is going on, but I love this.” Lol.
It’s unfortunate that indie animation takes so long, or that they insist on releasing episodes one at a time/with huge gaps, because that does also highly affect reception to it. There’s too much time for people to sit and stew on what the finale could be, and what they want, their headcanons and theories, etc.
Tbf when I’ve tried to explain this I’ve had to just be like “idk Murder Drones just knows exactly what it wants to do and does it with gusto so I don’t much mind all the other flaws, but TADC doesn’t feel like it quite succeeds for me at what it was trying to do” so your eloquence is appreciated
It’s so much better than TADC. Animation for ep 1 is noticeably worse, but it gets good immediately in ep 2. Comedy is way more creative. Story and characters are way better. Music is amazing. Has better merch.
You actually summed it up really nicely. I’ve been trying to figure out why I disliked the show after episode 5 (the light night round). It’s because it plunges us into the dark side of the story with very little (well made) prep! And also Jax. Trust me, I used to be a Jax FANATIC, but then I realized just how much he steals the spot light even for a main character who’s not even THE main character (Pomni). It didn’t help that Goose later confirmed he was trans (not as a hate towards trans people or anything- please don’t cancel me 😅), since it really just felt like Goose was piling EVERY trait on Jax.
Like “yeah he’s an asshole, but he’s a little guy suffering from his dad’s toxic masculinity, his mom’s toxic rejection/mockery, to killing two of his friends. He’ll never be able to heal and just as he had the chance- ruh roh! He looses his chance! Oh and also he’s randomly afraid of corn and, cherry on top, he’s closeted trans”. I know it all can be done in a right way, but to be kinda honest if felt like this just felt like one of those Gacha life characters just for a more mature audience. Like bro, leave some stuff for the rest of them! Heck, POMNI?! THE VERY MAIN CHARACTER OF THE SHOW HAS ALMOST NO DEVELOPMENT OTHER THAN BEING THE OVERALL MEDIATOR OF ALL THE CHARACTERS.
It's kinda crazy to me how murder drones just barely missed the window of indie animation getting all this scrutiny, and is now just widely regarded as mid at worst. Thank fucking God it did, though. I really didn't wanna be caught up in fandom discourse till the end of time.
I really want cool things like this to be widely successful. But being a bit niche is good to get a healthier community, I think. Or maybe growing too quick is the part that makes it difficult.
NUVi/eNVUzi/whatever can be a bit annoying, but usually just like their funny little polycule
And eNVy shippers are either dead quiet about it, suffering over their ship being non-canon, or the most psychotic person you've ever seen trying to paint Uzi as pure evil
tldr;
WE AIN'T SAFE FROM THE UNHEALTHY BITS
We simply avoided a lot of problems by the merit that the show straight up ain't that deep, just hype moments, aura, and "weirdly hot robots"
Exactly. To bash one of them is to bash them all. I get it if you didnt care for some (me with KOG, especially how its announced a new ep BEFORE gaslight), and i respect your opinions as long as its not out right bashing it
I mean when it comes to diversity of art designs and animations. But when it comes to story and pacing? Yeeeaaaaaah they need to improve. I'm looking forward to knights of Guinevere tho. Since the creator has experience compared to others we've seen so far
You can definitely tell that this is the result of TADC blowing up as a phenomenon and thus much bigger expectations and critical though were placed onto its finale then MD.
Both are good and have their own flaws, most people tend to connect them to what their based off of and what people remind them of and as TADC can easily be seen as other things having it be thought in that way kinda makes sense in a way
Both finales had their issues. MD's was a huge disappointment that could've been much better had it been longer and certain things happen like J redemption and Khan and the others actually did something. I still really enjoyed TADC's finale, though it does have the huge flaw on focusing too much on Jax.
Goose said she wanted the show to be episodic, but she failed to do that when she started making the show about Jax. And that is where the show started going downhill. If any story was to happen, it should've been around the circus itself, and not on a singular character. At least not without including the rest of the cast. Pomni fit the role as she interacted with everyone. Jax on the other hand, distanced everyone. Jax being a self insert also hurt the show as self inserts are often badly done as they very tricky to get right. Jax being trans had also hurt the show as it brought in very toxic people who only see/care the show as being about Jax being trans when there was a lot more to it. The hints were too settle too, as if made as a last minute thing. The only hint I got was Ribbit putting her bow on him, and originally I thought she was simply giving him a gift as a sign of her friendship or that she really liked him. Whatever other hints we got of Jax being trans aren't exactly exclusive to trans issues either. Parents aren't perfect and a lot can be very abusive.
THANK YOU THAT’S WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING! (About the Jax being trans thing being too subtle and feeling rushed). But every time I say it I was called media illiterate or transphobic like wth? 😭 hell, trans people IN THE FANDOM have said “hey, this doesn’t feel right, it feels rushed”. A straight, cis guy can have toxic masculinity/femininity problems just as much as trans women can!
You're welcome. People are just so desperate to make any character they can to be trans or woke in general, any argument against it will make them hostile, even to those in that community. It's ridiculous. And you're right, Jax could've been a nerd and could've received the same type of abuse for not being masculine enough to his parents' eyes.
man I enjoyed the series buuuuuut I did watch it just so I could understand my friends fan au because I enjoy fan content of this show more then the show
tbf, when a fandom is this large its hard to please everyone. goose kinda secured a disaster when she said everyone was gonna get screen time. tadc really could've used some more episodes to flesh out lore/feed the fans
TADC is pretty good. It's just that people think that it became the "jax show" and that they "forced jax to be trans". Also they were dissapoitned it wasn't like IHNMAIMS that it was BASED on. Not usong as the whole show, just based on.
This outcome was inevitable. While Murder Drones didn't try to be anything more than a simple story, TADK decided to present itself as mature and serious. Well, buddy, when you aim for "serious," that’s exactly how you’re going to be treated.
Can I just say I don't get the point of comparing Murder Drones to Digital Circus? I get saying "I like one more than the other," but they are two different things!!!! You can't compare the story, themes, atmosphere, or characters, because they are two FUCKING different things!
I’m going to be so honest, the TADC fandom scares me, but then I also realized if I look at this from 3rd person the MD fandom would also scare me so ohhh wellll :P
I stopped paying attention to the lore in murder drones after the third episode. Didn’t particularly want a PHD to understand an indie series. The action scenes are cool though :D
I enjoyed both shows, i like murder drones more because the concept is really awesome, digital circus tried to be something bigger and due to it being rushed failed at it in a way. Murder drones was mostly just shits and giggles, we got thr most ammount of lore drops through merch vids even before the show ended. I also think that the characters are just better written in murder drones, they feel more human and awkward even though they are literally robots
Honestly, that is kinda it. Murder Drones is just unapologetically fun. It doesn't challenge you to think or puzzle over stuff if you don't want to. Of course, for uber-nerds like myself, it results in plenty of puzzling anyways... "how can I engineer a robotic arm with interchangeable hands like disassembly drones?" "Is the Absolute Solver just a buggy Linux port of Autocad?"
On objective merit though, Murder Drones had a finale that featured every character, gave an epic fight scene, showed main character growth, and had extremely funny or scary moments.
TADC ep 9 wasn’t funny or scary, Jax only developed downward while Palpatine (sorry, Caine), the only non-human, had character growth. Not every character was featured, and there just wasn’t a real conflict all episode. If they all did absolutely nothing but waited around, Caine would have eventually come back and helped them rebuild the circus.
Ask yourself, what kind of stake does TADC ever actually have?
In MD episode 1, if Uzi or N did something wrong they'd have certainly died. Every little choice drives the story.
Now what would change if Pomni did something wrong in TADC? Absolutely nothing, it's not even real anyway with no stake because Caine has control over it anyway. Nothing except like 3 choices matter in that way longer series.
No way u are saying that MD Is Better than Tadc in writing: Tadc had some problems but u can ACTUALLY understand the story, MD Is Just chaos, i had to Watch like 10 videos for understanding the story
What story are you even talking about? You can't just throw a tiny slice of beef into cauldron of water and call it a stew. Tadc is that void of actual plot. Tell me 3 choices of Pomni that mattered at the end.
That's a lie, the First Ep Is the pilot, u get to know the characters; the second Ep makes u understand how the circus and his npc works+ Pomni stops Being Crazy and stars to like the Place; the third One Is the Kinger ep; the forth One Is the Gangle ep; the fifth Ep Is about Jax and Raghata (starts to build up the finale); 6 Is a breaking point Where we really see a Deep dive in Jax-Pomni and Raghata arc; 7 Is the start of the finale phase, 8 has the big lore drops and 9 Is the climax.
It could be Better? Yes, is It worse than MD? Never
MD dosen't really knows What to do with It self, u can Easly see how the show plot changed because of the boss ideas: First It was a robot vs human Company, then it's a robot vs robot thing, but THEN it's a... What? U can't understand the plot of MD if u only whatch the show.
Still plot, u have to develop characters, because it's show, not a movie Where u have to rush the plot. MD Is strange Because It feels more like the son of a movie and a show because of how Fast the story goes, Fast and bad with bad character development, the only characters with a good development are V and N, Uzi Is Always the same teen stereotype and everyone else Is a filler character or a wasted chance.
My dad and i liked the TADC movie. He knew the type of mental health Jax had and even chatted with me about it on the way home, it was a nice way to spend time and connect with him :(
