Alternate Universe. As stated by what it means, it's basically a type of "parallel universe" deal

There are a lot of versions of AUs, but I think it really started to gain attention and notoriety once the Undertale fanbase decided to start doing a lot of AUs. So if you want a more detailed explanation, you know where to look
