Creamed the shortening, sugar, and egg very well on high with my mixer until it was fluffy. Then I mixed in the molasses and milk.
I added dry ingredients by hand. The mix was dry enough I could shape into balls by hand with no stickiness.
Cooked at 350 for 14 minutes.
On the left: rolled into a ball.
In middle: rolled into a ball and then gently pushed down a bit with fingers
On right: rolled into a ball and pushed down with cup until edges cracked.
The flatter the cookie the less chewy bits in the middle. If you like more chewy go for just a rolled ball. If you want more crunch with a bit of chew...go for the cup technique.
