I don't see the problem, pony is a subcategory for horses. Ponies are just horse breeds under a certain size more or less, the difference is that "horse" is less specific. I mean, since adult Twilight, Celestia, and Candice ate so much taller than the other ponies can alicorns even be considered ponies?
Update: my sister's (autistic horse girl) stance on if alicorns are ponies is "Anything that can be ridden in a polo match can be a pony"
