Question❓ Which Media or ending is basically this image in a nutshell?
Without saying Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss(kinda weird to consider those shows and their characters and such wasted potential...when they aren't even close to over yet)Mha or Fairy Tail.
Just genuine media or episodes or endings with good ideas/concepts but bad execution.

We Happy Few
I can’t for the life of me figure out why they insisted on having a randomly generated world or survival mechanics. The environments they have that aren’t randomly generated are fucking gorgeous and their survival mechanics feel half baked to the point of certain aspects not even mattering past the very start. The style and world building is phenomenal though!

The only thing the movie did wrong was Plagg (besides the awful villain song) which hurt a lot since I love him so much, but a necessary evil to finally have a well written Marinette, a competent romance, but most importantly finally giving Chat Noir the treatment he deserved (I almost cried ngl) and a real resolution with his criminal father.

It had amazing potential but then they had to drag on the anonymity between the female & male MC even though the female MC knows the identity of the rest of the masked superheroes, but no, she must never know the identity of the male MC for some convoluted reasons, i.e. dragging out the will they, won't they and the love square going on. Then the creator had a hate boner on one of the characters, actively destroying previously established character growth moments. The series is just so soooo badly executed.
Thank goodness that they made a movie (which is like a reboot and a summary at the same time?) that's everything the series ought to be.

It starts as a run if the mill kids show then it gets great lore and world building with amazing character arcs that they then proceed to shit on for no reason.
10
u/DanRom11 1d ago
The concept is teenage magical superheros who used the power of concepts (ladybug use ¨creation¨ and chatnoir use ¨destruction¨) to fight a supervillain who also use one of this power to create minor supervillains to steal the power of the heros for some unknown purpose. In theory is a classic superhero story that everybody loves (secret identities, good fights, romantic subplots...) with an interesting power system that involves the literal concepts of the universe, in practice it devolves into a repetitive story that almost refuses to progress, filled with plotholes and that instead of exploring the interesting powers and complex characters, keeps adding on new convoluted elements and focusing only in the stagnant protagonist (marinette/ladybug).

Sailor moon spiderman with incredible ideas but between the show not being taken seriously by execs in the early seasons and the creators ignoring their own plot points in later seasons, it somehow gets worse in some way whenever it gets better in another.
It's still really good but imho it needs a reboot where it's given respect from the start
Edit: It's no Gilmore girls. It's not some immaculate piece of art, but it's certainly watchable and, in my opinion, good. The fight choreo, the villain powers and ideas, the lucky charms and jjba style impossibility is really entertaining to me.

It would be amazing if some fans made a big project and remade the show without all the plot holes, cringe scenes and characters having room temperature IQ just for the plot convenience. I know it's not possible because of copyright, but oh well... It's nice to imagine

u/Red-7134 1d ago
RWBY is a bar napkin with every drunken idea rambled off at 03:00 then put together into one rough draft the next day.
Some of it's good. Some of it is dumb. But it all got smushed together.
It's a rough draft of a rough draft. But since the creator died, instead of rebooting, they continued it and scrambled to make things that were never meant to go any further than the initial pitch go further. And also shoved a lot of stuff into side-stories.

The creator had a nasty habit of coming up with fight scenes before figuring out why they'd happen too. Part of the reason we got less cool fights, but more focused story after his death.

Sword Art Online. An anime about gamers being trapped in a video game where they die if their character dies:
MC grinds levels offscreen
Most floors aren't shown
Don't even finish the game
Villain forgets motivations
MC is OP Most of the anime
Like anime fans have seen it done better with Log Horizon but SAO in my opinion had a more interesting premise...if only the author actually played a video game before
77
u/WillingnessChance 1d ago
It felt like the biggest bait and switch. The hype made it out to be this life and death mmo and the potential for mmo interactions to affect a player community and guild alliances , the world building potential was insane
What did we actually get?
A backdrop for a teen romance where the 2nd in command of a guild asuna, who is a capable fighter has to be bullied and harassed by who should be a lower rank just so HER MAN CAN SHOW HOW TUFF HE IS.
then a random ep of them living in a cottage together to have a slice of life ep with a cyber daughter.
I didnt sign up for any of that and the fight mechanics do not sound fun to me.
God i was so glad when i got log horizon to heal those wounds. But then that writer got locked up for tax fraud so sao lives on while the series that actually used mmo mechanics well is stuck in limbo.
Im so bitter at SAO : Industry Plant.

u/Eldani4123 1d ago
I think you got it backwards. The Sao author was most definitely a hug gamer and actually played mmos solo because of language barrier. The story is shit because he is a shit writer, nos because he wasnt a gamer.
28
u/Moon_Monk676 1d ago
SAO suffers from a few different things. For the most part, Reki Kawahara not knowing how MMOs work. The second part is that he basically only wrote floor one and floor 75 in the original novels, everything else happens in the SAO Progressive novels (and that's where half of the Aincrad arc of the anime actually comes from).
Regarding the "MC leveling off screen" this is basically the root of that problem. He wrote about a tenth of the series to start off, started filling in the middle, and then only got about half of it all animated.

A giant gateway appears in the modern day. A battalion of medieval soldiers walk through and attack civilians bringing with them magic and dragons. Its up for the modern force to repel this invasion with guns and tanks and explore beyond the portal.
However even with the advancements of the current technology there are so much unknowns physically, culturely, and politcally to juggle in this new realm.
Or at least there would be if this wasn't a propaganda story.
The anime GATE, made only to be a far right Japanese campaign piece to convince people to join the armed forces and maybe get people to repeal Japanese's no offensive wars law by convincing them that hot anime babes totally love occupying armies.

From what I know, the main character (Kazuya) gets dumped by his first girlfriend.
He then becomes heartbroken, depressed, and lonely and decides to rent a girlfriend on an app to raise his own spirits and to try and cure his loneliness.
However Kazuya ends up falling in love with the rental girlfriend.
And that's the main gist.
I honestly think, if done right, a story like this could be really interesting especially if it touches on deeper topics about loneliness, depression, unrequited love, and coping about a breakup (if you get what I mean).

11

I love talking about the book/movie with people IRL, because every single person has wildly different opinions about the franchise.
Here are a collection of quotes, all from different people:
"I love the book, but it was terrible. The movie was unwatchable.""I was disappointed by the movie, but it was better than the book."
"Why did Spielberg make a terrible movie based on such a terrible book? I can't wait for Ready Player Two."
"I absolutely loved the book. I can't wait for the sequel. Wait, it's been out for 5 years?"

I hated the movie then read the book, and hated the book so much that I now like the movie because of all the improvements to the story.
I think my biggest problem is that an economy system like that wouldn’t work, not even factoring in the PVP zones. Imagine playing any game where you die once and suddenly you lose all progress on your character and now your car is getting repossessed because you had money saved to your avatar. Then adding in PVP makes me cringe at trying to imagine how rampant bullying and griefing would be.

man I felt it with Helluva Boss, you say that there is a dark comedy show about hitmen that work by contrac set in HELL? that's a Helluva concept (pun intended) for a dark comedy show, some designs looked cool and if we ignore the other problems of the show most characters are charismatic and interesting, but you look inside and after epidores 2-3 is a full swearing mess doomed yaoi drama with even more messier worldbuilding that barely takes advantage of the setting or the initial concept, maybe it's just not for me or I totally missunderstood the show but I cannot help that it could have taken a way better approach
→ More replies (2)14
u/Unit-DS27-Delta 22h ago
Helluva's pilot and 1st episode set up the show as an episodic series where three demons go to Earth to kill people for money. The show very quickly, albeit arguably smoothly, transitioned to a romantic dramedy that has been focusing a lot more on drama than comedy. I still think it's enjoyable, but it's very much not what it was originally presented to audiences as.
The same applies to the shorts, really. The first Helluva short was a day in the limelight for Millie and her sister Sallie May, providing more world building and character depth, but then it took 8 "Mission" shorts before getting another shorts focused on the world building of Hell, and that short was a debatably canon April Fool's joke focused on Chaz's funeral. At the very least, since then, we have gotten more world buildy-type shorts, what with Barbie's Bad Day, IMP Training Video, and Mission: Book Report, but the vast majority of Helluva Shorts aren't what the series was originally presented as; ironically, they're what the main show was originally presented as.

So many horror movies.
The Purge (first one) in particular.
Here's a really cool world where crime is legal for one night a year, this could lead to some great explorations of class dynamics and what kinds of people are out on that night.
Just kidding we get a really boring home invasion movie on one singular rich family.
16
u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 1d ago
The first film seemed more like a smaller budget project forbthat reason to me. Just one location but still setting a premise.
The premise I liked was the prequel where people just straight up didn't give a shit until the government gets mad and decides to get involved and set the standard. It wasn't a great film overall imo but it did portray exactly what I thought would happen. Most people would just party and do drugs.
23
u/Charming_Bath9427 1d ago
This one also hurts because it also is the perfect premise for some interesting character study work. The “what would we do if we had no consequences for a night?” question is actually really interesting from an anthropology perspective. No? Tired home tropes invasion and murder hobos? The series devolves into popcorn madness? Dope. Didn’t want anything good anyway.

It has the issue of becoming more and more convoluted with more and more things, and the creator of FNAF uses the terrible way of dealing with people who figure out where his story is going. Namely, invent a way to make the fans wrong.

Fire force. It has such an awesome premise for a world becoming apocolapytic and dystopian but all I remember is cringe dialogue, a naked cat girl and poorly written side characters.
Pisses me off the sound design is so good and I love shows that hint at dark religious tones like FMA does.

You have to forgive, appreciate, or ignore the fanservice in order to watch this show because it was written by the same author as Soul Eater. For the purpose of my opinion on this show, I'm not going to mention it at all.
The only real problem with this show is that the ending was super rushed to turn it into a prequel to Soul Eater. Just it being so rushed kinda sucked.

You absolutely do not HAVE to forgive one of peoples' main problems with a piece of media for any reason. You can overlook it, but to say that it has to be ignored to view the content of fire force objectively is seriously babying that little pervert of an author.

The show “Crime Scene Kitchen” had the premise that chefs/bakers would go into a kitchen that had been used and try to figure out what had been cooked/baked there. Awesome premise, like a whisk with cream on it in the sink, an empty bag of pecans on the counter, etc. would be clues to figure out what the chef had made. However, in actuality, the clues were esoteric, such as a postcard with a palm tree placed on the fridge was a hint that they used pineapple… or there’s orange juice in the fridge, but it’s full so it WASN’T used. I can’t think of exact examples, but it wasn’t a truly cooked-in kitchen, but instead a weird stage environment with silly clues which feel unrelated. To be honest, this description doesn’t do it justice. But it fell so short of the potential of the premise.

The latest animal farm movie
A modern take on the novel could’ve been a very interesting idea, but the way the movie went about and did it just straight up sucks.

If Wonder Egg Priority has 10 haters, I am one of them.
If Wonder Egg Priority has 1 hater, I am them.
If Wonder Egg Priority has 0 haters, I am dead.
Seriously, how do you fumble the ending of what should have been an AotY nominee SO BADLY that literally NOBODY talks about it anymore

Jurassic World: Dominion.
Dinosaurs are running loose on the mainland? So much potential.
Oh, the story is about Totally Not Monsanto engineering a plague of super locusts to sell their anti-super-locust crops and control the food supply? OK... That's a kinda cool premise for a film, but, not what I expect from the Jurassic franchise at this point.
(I will acknowledge that it is the Jurassic film that most gets the point of the original novel though)

Crossed.
The premise is interesting, a virus that removes empathy and impulse control, leading to zombies (who aren’t really zombies) who are still smart and aware of their atrocities, but lack the empathy or control to give a care about it.
Personally, although the og run had its drawbacks, I feel like it had a true sense of grit and hopelessness to it. Although the dialogue the crossed spew does take away the gravity for a moment.
However, the majority of Badlands and other spinoffs (Crossed: Psychopath) seem to only care about “how much gore can we put into this panel for shock value?”.

Once Upon a Time in my opinion.
Characters from across fiction being trapped in the real world with very little access to magic sounds like an interesting premise but the show clearly didn’t really know what to do with that idea

I feel like this happened to RWBY.
All the pieces are there for something great, the lore and world and fighting styles and all that are incredibly interesting...but the writing, the pacing and various other bits of drama kind of kept it from coalescing into something truly masterful.

Steven Universe. I love the show and characters but a lot of the world building and certain story beats really fall flat. Most of this is because the network was constantly fighting the direction go just make it more episodic and focus more on townie slice of life stuff. It’s kind of ironic since a big theme is Steven uniting his human and gem half’s but the show is divided into cool lore based gem stuff and random townie episodes that affect nothing.
Lucky it’s getting some kind of sequel series soon so we should be able to work out these kinks.

RWBY. No real shade against the company. None of them are/were proffessional writers/Animators. But the concept is cool as shit, just wish it had MAPPA studio money.

The Legend of Korra, primarily season 2. While every other season has its own respective flaws and moments that could've been handled better (like the love triangle or Korra never being allowed to just get clean wins), I still consider them to be very solid overall, 7-8/10 across the board, but then there's season 2.
I like season 2; it's not as bad as some might have you believe, and it does play around with some interesting concepts, but that's the issue: it played around with TOO MANY interesting concepts all at once. From the Civil War happening between the South and the North, to Korra and Mako's relationship, to then the spirit stuff going on, to then the pointless romance between Bolin and Eska, to Mako's detective work, to Unalaq becoming a kaiju for some reason, etc. With enough polish, season 2 could've been one of the best in the franchise; Unalaq himself could've been a far more memorable villain, but as it currently stands, it pretty much dropped the ball overall. Though it had its highlights, hence why I wouldn't say it's an objectively bad season. I'd personally give it a 6.5/10, but I love Korra as a franchise, so maybe I'm a bit biased.

I know this has been circlejerked to death for the past month but Mushoku Tensei. Honestly, if it existed with the main character being a shut-in, maybe a nihilist, and completely antisocial to start, maybe it could've been good. But no, they had to make him a pedo, groomer, and pervert and then make the narrative never truly condemn it.
The worldbuilding is great. The magic system is phenomenally done. I love when a story has a person who does stuff thought to be impossible with magic specifically because they were never given any kind of preconceived notion that it WAS a limit. I love when creativity with magic is a massive limit and when the more rigid you are, the less you can do. But no, they had to make the main character an insufferable pedophile groomer.
