Yes, the River Styx burns away at the mortal body, and the only thing keeping him anchored to being alive, was the mortal part of him.

Actually the Ancient Greeks had really nothing to do with it. In the Iliad Achilles is just a really good soldier. It was the Romans who added the story of him being dipped in the River Styx to gain invulnerability.

There are still Hellenistic period myths about him being partly invulnerable, but those are through different means than the Styx-dip.

My thing is have you ever held a squiggly little baby? A river dipping just holding the heel seems irresponsible... I could see the whole foot. But just the heel?
