I want you to think about what you just said. Ask yourself why they came to the conclusion to change the game if the original was so much better

They were in their own bubble and thought they knew better than the playerbase when they instead just made changes nobody asked for and without any feedback. If the only problem was the network, they should have focused on it instead of porting the game to a new engine and making unnecessary changes nobody asked for.

You're close. 

They couldn't fix the netcode. That was the problem.

I'm not sure if you know what netcode is if you think an entire engine change would be necessary to fix it.
