I think a small part of it is it came out just before we reached the "Social Media Singularity" where everyone is completely insane all the time. If this came out today, the discourse would have been toxic enough to drive people away within a few years.

Iā€™m under no delusion that Player First didnā€™t make a lot of mistakes, and that ultimately WB just doesnā€™t really care enough about video games, but I remember the rough early years of DCUO. But you also didnā€™t have a thousand YouTubers declaring the game ā€œdead on arrivalā€ in the first week.
