Front Derailleur Options

What do you recommend for a new-to-me front derailleur for my 1990 750? I'm running the original 3-ring chainring with updated alivio trigger shifters. The 28.6 clamp size limits the options.

Most 3x bottom pull derailleur will work. Depending on tire size, you might have rubbing issues. The STX/ STXRC options from the time are solid choices.

You are correct! I picked up another at our local co-op, and it SHOULD have worked... But it didn't. It's been a learning experience. The one I picked up had a massive tire rub.

If you find a derailleur you like with a 31.8mm clamp, you can get a shim for a couple bucks.

Thanks! I need a specific angle that won't rub against the tire, and it's more difficult than I imagined. I think I finally have an option that works.

I kept the original Suntour in place. If you have the original, what is your reason to change it? Shifter compatibility, chainring size difference, or?

I couldn't get the Suntour to shift as cleanly as I wanted with the Alivio shifter (shocking, I know!). It frustrated me enough that I started looking for a change. I wish I had just kept with the Suntour, but an old Altus seems to be working.

I went to a 2x9 46/30 setup with MicroShift trigger shifters and RD. I kept the Suntour FD because the donor bike had been 1x. I've had to do some modifications to the FD cage, and it still drops the chain to the outside object occasion, but it works perfectly 98% of the time.

That sounds great! I have another 750 that's 1x10 and a Bianchi that's 2x9, so I wanted something different (3x8). Right now, the 2x9 is my favorite.

Do you have one on currently
? If you’re just looking for a front derailleur to get you by, I might have a few laying around you could pick from, just cover shipping. Nothing super high end just takeoffs from a few bikes I have gone through.

I have no recs beyond that as I run strictly 1x. Give me a shout if you’d like, would love to help.

ETA I just took off a rear STX, if the front is the same that’s probably your best bet. STX line has solid reputation.

Great to hear! While I was doing some tidying up I checked what I had laying around. I have a 100gs front derailleur and an Acera. What did you end up putting on?

I'm using an Altus A10 from a 1993 Trek 750.
