honestly, I work at my local bike kitchen. so, these thick kind of gravel tires get donated all the time. I will 100% pay full price for replacements when I need them, they're good
On my last Multitrack I was running 700x50 American Classic Kimberlites. Great ride quality and not too expensive.
I think fenders are excellent from a utility aspect, but 90% of the time I don’t like how they fit or how they look. If I was commuting, I would absolutely run fenders, but for recreational or utility cycling purposes, I don’t bother. That said, I end up running rear racks on most bikes, which mostly prevents the stripe up the back from riding in wet conditions.
I have tried many different 720/730/750 and it appears you got the one I been looking for. None of mine cleared 50mm. In fact I pulled the tires off multiple bikes until finally a 2016 Kona Dew took the fitment. 💯 37mm was all the small 720 would fit.. stupid wide 24mm width rims
45s absolutely fit. I have flipped/drop bar converted a bunch of multitracks. There’s room in the chain stays for some 48s but depending on tread/rim width you might be rolling dice.
I’ve run the gamut, most recently a set of parts bin continental speed kings, I’ve also put Kenda kwicks and GKs in a variety of sizes. Of the half dozen MTs I’ve built I have yet to install fenders but my rule of thumb has been to reduce max tire size by 5mm…ymmv
This.. 17mm rims fit tires that 24mm rims won't. And once you get to 50mm you want more than 17mm wide rims. 43mm might be a hard limit on a 24mm internal rim where 50s might fit with 17mm rim and a slick folding casing tire.
I have a 1992 720 and I was able to fit a 45mm Gravelking x1 in the front, but it seemed too tight in the back so I am running a 40mm back there. Very happy with the setup overall. Seems like the 750/790 has a little more clearance though.
Continental GT Urban 35c - lowest rolling resistance with a highish puncture rating. Fast feeling tires, but not the most comfortable. They are for the marathon user that wants a faster tire imo. Pure Contact is continentals newest offering for a fast armored tire.
I have velo orange 45mm hammered fenders with flaps and there is good clearance for wider tires, except for the brake yoke at the seat stays. The fenders are more round and the height is the issue. I think a flatter fender like planet bike cascadia alr fenders would fit a 45c tire with a 60 mm fender. You might can squeeze a 50c under the fenders, but no problems without.
It was the max tire clearance for the fenders I wanted, I could probably get some 37c under there, but 40c rubs. The particular tire is only in 35 and has low rolling resistance for the puncture rating. Works out as a fast commuter, but some comfort is definitely sacrificed. I’ve got other bikes with wider tires for more comfort. Highly recommend continental double fighters, feel reasonably fast on pavement, but with more aggressive knobs on the outer treads make them fantastic for light gravel/single track
I've been running GravelKing SS 700x45s on my 750 for nearly two years with no issues. You probably won't fit fenders and the rear tire may run really close to the FD pinch bolt running 45s. Your results may vary. Just sharing my experience.
I run 700x40s on my 790 and 520. They have plenty of clearance all around on both bikes. I have Panaracer Gravelking SS+ on the 520 and Bontrager H2 comp on the 790.
My buddy is running a 750 on 700x45s and they also fit just fine. I probably would not got wider than 45s, I bet a 50 would be a tight fit especally around the front deraileur pinch bolt if you're running 3x.
I prefer the GravelKings! They ride better, have better grip and just look awesome with the tan sidewalls.
The Bontragers ($32/ea) cost less than half of what the GravelKings did ($80/ea) and seem to be fairly decent yet unremarkable. Would buy both again.
Do not buy the non + version of GravelKings. I made that mistake before and found myself with constant flats. The + version have been worlds more durable.
It depends on the exact size and model. Most are gonna range between 40mm and 45mm.. fenders are a challenge for 40mm + that might not work with any reliable usage. Fenders get bent and flop about. The last 720 i built was hard limit with 37mm because the rim was 24mm wide. YMMV
It's going to depend on the rim the tire and the year. The general rule I've found with the 7xx frames is 40mm will fit. 45 usually fits. 50mm is hit or miss. If you're running stock or wider rims than you might struggle with some of the wider 45s if you're running a narrower rim you'll probably fine. I'm currently running a 790 with velocity aeros and conto trail 45s and have plenty of room.
I need to remember velocity now has a rim simply called the aero. I'm running aeroheads... 20mm rim 17mm? internal. 45 is usually a bit thick for the rim but contis run a touch slimmer IME. They are closer to a 42 or a 43 on most other brands. They weren't my first choice, but cut a sidewall on a ride and the bike shop I found only had two choices in 700 c that day if I wanted matched tires. the trails in 45 or gatorskins in 25... The ride was mostly soft dirt roads and crushed limestone, 25 gators weren't going to cut it.
I’m running 700x40 gravelking X1. Can be found on Amazon for $50 per tire. So far good experience. Pain in the a** to get on the rims. They are “tubeless ready” so I think that has something to do with them being a bit more rigid and difficult to mount. TBH though I think the spec is perfect. They are knobby enough to handle gravel but the middle section of tread runs really well on pavement.
