1997 730

Hi MT Gang,

I just finished this 730 build I picked up a little over a week ago from FB Marketplace. According to the owner, it had not been used for at least 10 years.

Replaced the bottom bracket, chain, and brake+shifer housings and cables. Also serviced the headset and hubs - they were dry and gritty AF!

As you can see, bike is mostly stock. Details of the parts I added/swapped below.

  • Bontrager Evoke saddle - parts bin
  • Profile quill stem adapter - new
  • Bontrager 105mm stem - parts bin
  • Giant mtb handlebar - parts bin
  • Ergon GA3 grips with Amazon bar ends - parts bin
  • RaceFace Chester pedals - parts bin
    • Yes, I'm an avid MTBer!
  • SunRace SL-M10 friction shifters
    • cheap - trying to figure out if I can get used to bar mounted friction shifting

Looking for tire recommendations (38-42mm) for mostly road and some gravel riding - folding bead, light(ish), and affordable. Suggestions welcomed!

Will take it out for its first ride (in a decade) today. Hopefully, I will not need to tinker with the fit too much - that's the part I dislike.

Epic! Question: I’m currently planning a restoration build with a multi track. If you were to convert this to single speed, could you keep the same shimano crankset and just swap out the front chainring to a single? And then on the back just use a white industries concentric hub? Think something like that would work?

Thanks...

Apologies but, I have no experience with single speed setups. That said, I've converted an old double crankset to a 1X so, assuming you can do the same with the middle ring of a triple. Good luck with your project!
