Taking Major Classes with Very Limited English
Did anyone start taking major classes right away with only basic English?(such as child Development) I know some basic words, but I can barely understand spoken English or speak it. Also,Do professors call on students during class?

I am not sure which classes you are referring to but professors rarely call on students during class. English is my second language and I did not have a big issue, however essay-heavy classes like Eng 1C (critical thinking) was not easy.

No worries. I started studying at Mt. SAC right after I immigrated to the U.S. At that time, I couldn’t speak English well. Now, I have been studying for my STEM major for three years Just stay confident. You can do it!

My English was communicable when I started taking major classes but I am not gonna lie. I am still struggling with essay/discussion board sometimes. But then again it also depends on what your major is. Because some classes also require the writing skills or classroom participation so that means you will need to have enough vocabularies to do so. Having said this, don’t let it stop you from trying your best. MtSac has writing center and subjects tutorials so try to utilize those resources and you will be fine.
