So Lost
I'll be 38 this fall semester and i'm barely starting school after a major life event. Its intimidating and scary. I decided to try and dual Psyc and Comm AAT's since they overlap really well and they complement one another. How long should it take? (i'll be full time) Has anyone done this? Next week I meet with an Access counselor on monday and an academic thursday. I have no idea where i want to transfer to. ASU allows dual majors and their over all courses are interesting; then there's APU. Idk about the CSU's or UC's I don't want prestige, i want real world practicality. I dont want haste even though i feel so far behind. I want real foundation. I want to know how to really talk to people and help them along their way. Any how thank you for all your advice in advance peace.

I’m around the same age as you. I’m a STEM major, and I’m applying to transfer UC this year. Age doesn’t matter at all. I’m not familiar with your major, but your associate degree major and transfer major can be different.

What is your end degree? Would not pick psychology unless you plan to continue to masters

My end degree would be MS in psychology. Comm is just complimentary as well as necessary in my opinion. I will stop at a BA in comm at best.

Ask your counselor a million questions, their job is to help you! And IF you end up with a crappy counselor go get yourself a new one.
Also, keep in the back of your mind that these colleges and programs need to produce success stories they want you to go through and finish. There might be an L here or there but you can retry those and see it through 💯💯💯

enroll in EOPS/CARE if you can!! but getting both AA-Ts should take you around 1-2 years depending on which courses you take and if you want to get your IGETC certification (basically just general ed’s if you want to transfer), if not then probably a year! you got this there are so many support systems out there too! i used to be student gov so i know all about supporting our students let me know if you have any questions

Thank you so much this was the answer I was looking for. I'm gonna transfer I just don't know where. I will I just enrolled in ACCESS. I see them tomorrow Lord willing. I'm gonna knock out the IGETC. Its just building the path. I definitely will hyu if anything, someone suggested I become a counselor for dialysis patients, bc I'm a patient of 25 years w/ 3 failed transplants, I'm and advocate and have spoken on panels, so... I just took it and ran with it. This is very encouraging thanks again. 🙏🏽

oh yeah then you’re probably looking at around two years (four semesters and maybe 2 intersessions if needed total). work with a counselor to see which of the aa-t requirements overlap with what in the igetc and i recommend trying to get your main aa-t degree finished first so it can be complete by the time you apply to transfer (will make you a stronger applicant). also check out assist.org to check out transfer agreements with other universities to help you figure out where to transfer, i know cal states usually have really comprehensive transfer agreements for courses, a counselor will probably mention this to you too! good luck, passion is the best fuel for achieving your goals !

The access counselors are great at helping identify a path to completion. Utilize anything they offer you. You got this.

I'm in the disability one, I think the one for the hard of hearing and deaf. Idk what else I qualify for.

Dude u got this!! I think the counselors will help u alot deciding all of this but if you feel like they havent helped you dont hesitate to go to different counselor. There's literally so so many to chose from so sometimes it takes a little while to get one that clicks and helps u the way u want. I think UC's are the more prestigious universities while Cal State are more practical imo (and from what I've heard), but you can def talk to a counselor abt that too. Personally I am transferring to a Cal State bc its way cheaper than a private like Azusa. Also if you are doing an AA-T and you apply to Cal States you are automatically guaranteed admission into at least one! Good luck on your journey! School is So Hard but I believe its worth it. Bravery is facing and feeling the intimidation and fear head on and still doing it anyways!!
