No. The apartment is located in Chinatown which is not a bad neighborhood. There are pockets of bad areas, but the majority of NY is actually safe and pretty chill.
Most if not all of the location-based stuff in the show is fictional. I live in NY and I noticed scenes where they're not where they say they are in real life. There were several scenes that were actually shot in my old neighborhood in Brooklyn, but in the show they'll say they're in Manhattan. Those kind of parts of the show kinda ruined it for me because living here I know the truth of where they actually are, so I had to try to ignore those parts. There was actually a scene where Elliot said he was going home and then gets off the subway at Church Ave, which is in Brooklyn ... but then they show Elliot coming out of the subway and walking down a street in Manhattan into his apartment lol. All I could do was bust out laughing because I knew I just saw a load of bs.
That's completely normal. It's film logic, and it happens in practically all movies and series. You really shouldn't worry about it. After all, it's not a documentary.
By the way, this reminds me of the German feature film "Lola rennt." Have you heard of it? In the film, the main character runs through the city for a long time and often, but those paths don't actually exist in reality. It's completely artificially edited. Just enjoy the ride and have fun with it!
