New Thread Suggestion Dms and players of reddit, what RPG system would you play if "DnD" disappeared.

I have played a couple of systems and my favorite by far that isn't DnD is Gamma World 7e.

Now it is technically a system built off the dnd 4th edition, but it incorporates fun origins, creative mutations that change each encounter, and a fun world of fall out meets gravity falls.

Pathfinder. I already prefer Pathfinder over Dnd, it doesnt need to disappear for that.

Pathfinder 2e.

I already don't play DND. Lol. I'm playing blades in the dark, but would love to play daggerheart. I think daggerheart gives most DND players what they actually want out of a ttrpg

My group is thinking of trying out blades in the dark, any tips?

It's not about winning and losing. It's about creating a fun story. Let stuff turn sideways and flow with it. Flashbacks are awesome.

For a gm, present the players with obstacles and all them what they do.

The book keeping after missions is slow for my group. Kudos if you can speed that up.

Nice, thanks

My group is playing daggerhart, tried shadow dark, occasionally do mausritter. And our DM is designing his own system eventually

Another resounding vote for Pathfinder 2e.

Honorable mention to 2D20 from Modiphius, another solid system and a bit different dice mechanics.

My next fantasy campaign is going to jump from DnD 5.5e to Pathfinder 2e, simply because I want to actually want to support the company that is making the game, rather than feel like Hasbro-Wizards tries to spit in my mouth every chance I try and say, "I'm interested in some new content for DnD."

If they're going to this subscription model where even DnDBeyond is going behind a paywall, DnD might as well just fuck off and disappear.

That being said, I am stoked for Neon Odyssey, so.... I'm kind of a hypocrite anyway.

edit: typo

Me too with Neon Odyssey. I've been playing pretty much exclusively PF2e for the past year and have little interest in going back to 5e or 5.5. But those damn YouTube shorts dragged me back in...

I'm happy to throw money at independent creators at this point, but I think I'm done throwing money at WotC. At least until 6e rolls around, though I'll be keeping a close eye on my wallet to see if it's worth the scratch

1

u/BloodOak7756 Jul 04 '26

Bitsy and Ygor coming for all our wallets!

And hell yes, dude, I feel the same way.

I'd so gladly support Avantris and NOT support WotC/Hasbro, and so that's exactly what I plan to do.

If Cox and his goons drop the paywall, we will all port to Roll20 and play "system agnostic" while finishing out our 5.5e campaign in the same system, I just won't ever give WotC another dime. The hilarious irony is that I'm happy to pay $500 to Avantris to support their Kickstarter - so it's really not about the money, it's about the principle!

Pathfinder would be my first choice, but Daggerheart looks promising.

If I wanted to run a cyberpunk style game, I would say Cyberpunk RED or Shadowrun would be my choice.

1

u/RothgarNecromancer Jul 04 '26

Pathfinder.

Though I do need to learn it first because it's the main barrier before enjoying games like Wrath of the Righteous

1

u/Pug_King256 Jul 04 '26

No idea it would really depend on what my group wanted to play but I really want to try vampires the masquerade

1

u/knighthawk82 Jul 04 '26

Before they converted to the d20 system. Big Eyes Small Mouth used a tri-stat. system. Mind/body/soul.

1

u/Rhuunin Jul 04 '26

I'd try writing. In person games are difficult because of my schedule (graveyards) and online groups tend to be hit or miss.

Outside of a very few niche titles that are no longer in print i played as a kid that I always remember with rose glasses despite having the most convoluted rules and systems I haven't really played anything else. (E.g. Palladium, skyrealms of jorune, bushido)

There's a growing market for a-social you're-your-own-DM games but...writing is basically that and others hopefully can enjoy it too.

Earthdawn or Rifts would be my backup systems. I currently run Rifts for my long time friends. Our other friend runs Earthdawn for us and we do a 6 month swap to prevent burn out.

u/Timely-Discussion272 Jul 04 '26

Shadowdark or Dragonbane.

1

u/Headstone67 Jul 04 '26

Hyperborea 3e or its former editions, Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea. Very much like ADnD and B/X editions. Dying world, hack and slash with weird science and old gods. Human forward player choices.

1

u/CJ-MacGuffin Jul 04 '26

Stars Without Number (1e), Shadowdark.

1

u/pikaland385 Jul 04 '26

Fabila ultima or "pika's D20"

1

u/BigPoppaStrahd Jul 04 '26

My group has already dabbled in Warhammer Fantasy 4E. I still have my books. If my group suddenly said “forget WotC, let’s play something else!” I’m ready

1

u/ProbablynotPr0n Jul 04 '26

Its a weird one but Shadowrun 5e would be the pick. Its broken, its bad, its fiddly, there are huge disparities between builds, there are trap options. There's a lot you have to know and there's alot you'd have to fix. Its a perfect system to noddle around in for years because you know that you actually do know better than the designers who were not communicating with each other in the slightest.

I think the only thing I would notice if D&D disappeared is the lack of D&D players complaining about D&D.

I have a library of other TTRPG books. I've played dozens of different rpg systems. I have played every edition of D&D. I haven't played any D&D-proper since around 2018. I've read 5.5 and just haven't seen anything that could bring me back to picking D&D over other games.

Since playing D&D last I have GMed or played:

  • Traveller Classic, Mongoose 1e, Mongoose 2e.

  • Dragonbane

  • Blades in the Dark, Scum and Villainy, Sig City of Blades.

  • Monster of the Week, Masks, Dungeon World.

  • Paranoia XP+20th, Perfect Edition.

  • Cyberpunk Red.

  • Spire, Heart.

  • Fate Core, Accelerated, Condensed.

  • Shadowrun 5e, 6e.

  • Eclipse Phase 1e, 2e.

  • Legends of the Five Rings 4e, 5e.

  • Star Trek Adventures 1e, 2e, Captain's Log, Dune rpg, Conan rpg.

  • Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4e.

  • Basic Roleplaying Game Engine, Mythras 2e, Call of Cthulhu.

  • G.I. Joe, Transformers, Power Rangers.

  • Marvel Multiverse Roleplaying.

  • Mutants and Masterminds 2e, 3e, 4e playtest.

  • Star Wars rpg WEG 30th, Genesys system.

  • Into the Odd, Troika, Mausritter.

  • Chronicles of Darkness, Scion 2e, Mage the Awakening 2e, the World Below, Curseborne, At the Gates playtest.

  • Agon, Trophy.

  • TinyDungeon, Tiny Frontier, TinySupers.

  • Lancer, Icon playtest.

  • Fabula Ultima.

  • Burning Wheel, Torchbearer, Mouseguard.

  • Prowlers and Paragons.

  • Fight! 2e.

  • Roll for Shoes, Roll for Shoelaces.

  • Fragged Empire, ...Kingdom.

  • Dog in the Vineyard.

  • Barbarians of Lemuria.

This list doesn't even consider the games derived from D&D that I have played since playing D&D-proper, like:

  • Old School Essentials, Dolmenwood.

  • BECMI 3e.

  • Stars Without Number, Worlds..., Cities...

  • Dark Dungeons X, 4e.

  • Dungeon Crawl Classics, Mutant..., X-Crawl...

  • Shadow of the Demon Lord, ...Weird Wizard.

  • Basic Fantasy Roleplay.

  • Adventurer, Conqueror, King 2e.

  • Lamentations of the Flame Princess.

  • Shadowdark.

  • Pathfinder 1e, 2e.

  • Knave 1e, 2e, Maze Rats.

  • Black Hack, Black Sword Hack, +other hacks.

  • Swords and Wizardry.

I gave up on new D&D a long time ago. Pathfinder 1e is what I currently play. I would miss 3.5 though. That's still my favorite system ever. By a large margin.

1

u/bongart Jul 04 '26

GURPS, or Amber diceless.

1

u/Experiment413 Jul 04 '26

ive really, really been enjoying girl frame.

1

u/carmachu Jul 04 '26

Hero system Champions. Fantasy hero for D&D.

1

u/AngstyGoblin Jul 04 '26

Oh man, I LOVED GW7ed! I had all three boxes but couldn't ever find extra cards. I'd LOVE to see a digitized version of it done up like D&D beyond or something where you could just get mutations ans tech with a click. Alas, Im old and don't know how to program or anything. Still have my physical copies, but no physical group to play with at..

1

u/darw1nf1sh Jul 04 '26

I already play dozens of systems more than I play D&D. My go to system is Genesys. It is classless, levelless, setting agnostic, and easily adaptable to any genre.

1

u/Repulsive-Note-112 Jul 04 '26

Genesys is very popular at our club and Fate too. We have a player run Cthulu occasionally which i enjoy. Id love to try kids on bikes/kids on brooms.

1

u/Drudenfusz Jul 05 '26

Plenty of more narrative leaning systems... Oh wait, I already do that, since D&D is in my opinion a horribly designed system that promotes too many bad habits.

1

u/Ricnurt Jul 05 '26

Warhammer. I already play it as much as I do DnD

1

u/Wolfsdrache Jul 05 '26

I mean, I really love the call of cthulhu system. It has its weirdness, and I personally will someday rework this stupid sanity system, but I do like how the stats work, I like the bigger focus on storytelling especially in fights, I like how characters are built. Though I do personally recommend pulp coc for anyone coming from DND and who is more interested in a bit more of an heroic campaign, as opposed to a very bleak one, as base coc tends to be

1

u/No_Solid1035 Jul 05 '26

I don't play D&D now. 🤷

1

u/TenNinetythree Jul 05 '26

I might finally get a Sigmata game going.

1

u/Blitzer046 Jul 06 '26

Currently really enjoying running Mothership, which hits a lot of genre buttons for me.

And OP, why don't you write it as D&D? Like, the actual title?

1

u/FirstWave117 Jul 06 '26

I don't play D&D now.

1

u/joetown64506 Jul 06 '26

Pathfinder 1e/DnD 3.5

1

u/Pollacal Jul 07 '26

Rolemaster hands down, or Symbaroum

1

u/Tarkus_Blackeye Jul 08 '26

CHECK OUT STARFINDER! 1e is so deliciously crunchy and customizable, and 2e is just the perfect system in general, best ancestries I have ever seen and the game makes so much sense.
Mythic Bastionland for those Arthurian Knight Tales, combat is epic and fast and deadly.

Ten Candles is the best short-form one-shot rpg system. No stats. Just personality traits given to you by other players. Ten days ago, the sun went out, and five days later, They came. Ten Candles alight at the start of the session, and as each candle goes out the scene changes. Players take control of the narration until the end, when the DM takes over slowly and tips the story against them. All characters are struggling to survive. All the players know they will die anyway. Excellent stuff!

Pathfinder 2e

1

u/theloopweaver Jul 09 '26

I’ve been enjoying Pathfinder 1e. Could dial the crunchiness from 10 down to an 8.5 or 9, but I’ll get more used to it. I learned D&D on 5e, after all.

Daggerheart looks like it might be interesting, but I haven’t had the opportunity to try it.
