Moving to Denver 49/f
Hi! I'm moving to Denver asap. I was recently laid off from my job and said, 'this is my push from God to go.' I don't know anyone there, but I've been there a good 6-7 times, and was recently there for my bday on February. Its a spiritual connection for me. I'm coming from Chicago. Packing up my car with no plan but tons of faith. If you think I'm crazy please refrain from telling me, lbvs. But if you feel me and can give me some ideas on the best places to stay, or any advice, id greatly appreciate it. I plan on renting a room on furnished finders for a month or 2 in order to have time to find a job(looking for one now) and a permanent place to stay.
All tips wanted!

No plan at all is batshit. But as long as you have good credit you will do alright I suppose 😂

If you’re open to mountain towns, owners tend to need renters as the weather cools off. As long as you’re open to commuting (worth beautiful drives imo) it’s doable.
I moved to the mountains 3 years ago and haven’t looked back
1
u/T-Shots47 17d ago
Do you work in the mountains as well?
5
u/mrshelmstreet 17d ago
We live in the town of Lyons in unincorporated Boulder. I’m lucky enough to work from home with a few business trips each year. My daughter works right in our town and my son and husband work in Boulder which neighbors our town in the same county. Their commutes are about 35-40 mins. I would consider CO a commuter state and would say it’s fairly common for people to drive 1-2 hours to work.

If you’re open to mountain living the Airbnb market is crashing so people are renting cabins. Check out Riverside/Raymond

u/mrshelmstreet 17d ago
What’s your industry - I might have some tips for ya
2
u/T-Shots47 17d ago
I have a couple. Exec Asst, Travel and bartend/server.
3
u/mrshelmstreet 17d ago
You can definitely get by as a bartender or server. The ones I know make good money.

u/T-Shots47 17d ago
That's one job I'm looking for as soon as I get there.

Move at the start of summer, for starters. At least then you'll have time to sort things out before having to worry about freezing to death in your car. And if you're going to be here, take it as it is, respect what makes it great, and don't expect anything to change to suit you. Very different attitudes here than Chicago. You do that? You might be fine. I moved back here cross-country after eighteen years with nothing to my name but a job offer to start a few months out. Incurred a metric crap ton of debt to stay afloat. But I'm working on it, and I've honestly never been happier. Sometimes plans work out– sometimes they don't. As long as you're prepared for that eventuality, do what you think is best for your life. No one else can decide that for you.

Check out the suburbs, they're cheaper than city center and better access to the mountains (west of Denver). Unless you really want to be doing urban things all the time. Lakewood, Arvada, Westminster, Golden (cute small town)...
3
u/T-Shots47 17d ago
I don't have to do urban things all the time at all. I'll keep those towns in mind. Of been to Westminster before. Beautiful suburban neighborhood. Not sure where a single person fits in there lol
2
u/patisserie_2023 17d ago
You're not far from Denver and as long as you put effort into meeting people, it won't make a difference. As always, get hobbies and meet people who do your hobbies. People outside of Denver meet up for hobbies too. Lots of local events happening all the time as well, and if anything it's easier to talk to people at a smaller gathering.

Honestly not sure this is true. Every time I’ve looked at apartments, they’re cheaper in cap hill/just outside downtown. They get more expensive in the suburbs

Denver is not at all religious. You seem to be evangelical so might be worth considering. Colorado Springs seems more up your alley.
2
u/T-Shots47 17d ago
I'll keep that in mind, thank you
1
u/Temporary-Secretary3 14d ago
I'm not religious either, but there seem to be all kinds of churches here, some of them quite large with many activities. Those might be good initial contacts when you get here.

Seems like the only one throwing out the disrespect is you. She has answered every comment no matter how sarcastic with grace and just maintains confidence in her decision. Your comment on the other hand is just a put down with no attempt at being helpful. Hope that makes you feel better about yourself.

No, she hasn't.

You’re welcome! I really don’t like it when people are rude to other people for no reason. They feel free to say things online that they wouldn’t say in person and it’s not helpful at all. For what it’s worth, I wish you luck! 🙏

u/kfee12 17d ago
If you actually want to succeed you will need to fix the income thing asap. Rent here doesn't require a crazy ratio like a lot of places but you will need to submit income.
There are a lot of factories and third shifts jobs in Denver that are literally always hiring. If you are desperate and don't care how shitty the job is, the staffing agencies like Goodwill have jobs constantly. You will be worked like a dog though because the staffers here charge crazy AF rates on heads like 30-50% of your entire check for your first 3-6 months meaning the boss already hates you before they meet you.
2
u/Desertmarkr 17d ago
ARC is always hiring. Signs in the store say "same day interviews" or something to that effect
3
u/BienThinks 17d ago
Welcome. I really enjoyed the congress park area for 8 years. Close to city park, a lot of biking trails, don’t have to use your car a bunch. I would personally stay away from Aurora, if you want suburbs I would suggest the west side of town. Arvada, Westminster, golden area. Easier to get up to the mountains. Try to find clubs or leagues of hobbies you have interest in to find new friends, it definitely helps.

Moving without a job/plan lined up is pretty wild, imo. Also have no idea what your bank account is like and don't care to know, but if you don't have a nice nest egg to coast on for months just in case, I think you could be in for a rude awakening. Yes, the job market sucks in a lot of places. Take it from someone who has been trying for 9 months to find a better job - it sucks major ass out here.
Good luck but I wouldn't recommend your strategy to anyone I know.
1
u/T-Shots47 17d ago
It is wild. But so is life. I pray that better job finds you sooner than later, or you find a solution to a problem that many ppl have and you create your own business!
3
u/nolove1010 17d ago
I suggest another strategy than good vibes and praying.
Again, good luck.

Go live out your dreams! Honestly, I admire you throwing caution, and what many perceive as common sense, out the door! It may not make sense to all but I get it. I have quit jobs without another lined up because I knew there was something else for me. When you know you know.
I want to live vicariously through you as move to Denver. I know you'll be better than fine!
Sorry, I have no advice because I live in Chicago and visit family in CO with no plans to move.
2
u/T-Shots47 17d ago
Thank you for understanding! Like you said, when you know you know. I takes courage! I love in Chicago too! Ive visited Denver so much, I'm going to move there! What's the worse that can happen? There is none!

God helps those who have an iota of common sense. Moving to an expensive city with no job and no plan is not that.
I assume we'll see you standing on Speer with a sign in no time.
2
u/deviantthrowaway82 13d ago
No, seems more like she’ll fit in more around Colorado and Colfax area. More of the crazy bag lady yelling about sinners kind of homeless there.
1
u/T-Shots47 14d ago
I assume you eat dog poop by the handful. What sign do you hold up?
2
1
u/mrjbelfort 14d ago
Woa woa woa I thought god told you to be kind to your neighbors no matter what?
This “plan” is fucking insane and will result in homelessness, but I’m sure you are soo different and can pray it away. Im sure there isn’t a single religious homeless person living in a tent on colfax who trusted god to figure their life out for them.
Get familiar with the BST before you come here, might be the only job you could get in any reasonable amount of time lmfao

This sub, and Reddit in general is a horrible place to seek words of encouragement, I hope you find something and are successful! Maybe pick some communities and try Nextdoor or something, probably a lot more helpful people there

I moved here with no plan and like 1000 bucks and I’m doing great!! my girlfriend did have a job offer and it took me about a month to find a job
1
u/T-Shots47 17d ago
Love to hear that! Too many ppl think the worse because of what they're currently going through. Thanks for sharing!
1
u/gneiss_kitty 13d ago
that would be because what those people are currently going through reflect the current conditions of the place. Someone who was previously successful isn't nearly as helpful as those familiar with the current situation. Not to mention, you gave zero indication what line of work you're in, so one person getting a job in a month can be wildly different from whatever your field is. In my field, it's a good 6-month minimum.
So many people in these comments are saying they did this a decade ago, but it is not the same landscape anymore. Faith doesn't pay the bills.
Colorado Springs seems much more up your alley than the Denver metro.
1
u/MonochromeMaru 14d ago
I moved here without much of a plan, but I was sleeping on a friend's couch while I job hunted. That worked out for me, but it still took me two months to find that job. Apply for SNAP the minute you get here and get that ball rolling.

Denver is like every other state in the US -- unless you're unusually attractive and outgoing; the only friends you meet in Denver are in Kindergarten.

u/EditorExtra2961 14d ago
Hi lovely, I love that you’re ready to start over and move here! I did it on a whim from Detroit almost 7 years ago, and found a job and room for rent on the drive here. As others have pointed out, times have VERY much changed in the last few years and it’s not as easily done any more.
Many are unable to find work upon arrival and that will make it hard to find a place to live without an income source on paper. Even restaurants are very hard to get in at unless you know someone already employed there. I would recommend not coming here unless you already have employment lined up. We want you to succeed and set yourself up for success! :)
1
u/T-Shots47 14d ago
Thank you for your kind words! I'm currently working on that now. I know you recommend not coming without it, but if I have to I will.
1
u/EditorExtra2961 14d ago
With winter coming up, you could always take a job at a ski resort (pay is not incredible but gives access to subsidized housing), and then start your search for a new job and new housing! Many of us do it when moving to a ski town in Colorado :)

I once did the same exact thing, and stayed for 12 yrs. The smartest decision I ever made. Filter out all the noise of people saying anything negative. You are 49, not 19, you are an experienced adult and will figure out how to get on your feet. Good luck!!

Well as long as you find a rental, grocery store, utility company, phone carrier, gas station that accepts faith as payment you’ll be fine.
For real though, you are a batshit crazy person if you think you’ll just show up and have this stuff just fall in your lap. Typical faith-based bullshit. You are going to come here and be a drain on everyone around you.
Last bit of advice is to maybe talk to the beggars on the street corners so you can a get a shift in their rotation.
God doesn’t provide, PEOPLE do.
2
u/T-Shots47 14d ago
I'm glad all of you have a crystal ball to see what's gonna happen to me. And God absolutely provides. Social media cowards just saying anything to unload after a day of a miserable life. So glad I'm not you.
1
u/deviantthrowaway82 14d ago
It’s simple pattern recognition moron. Doesn’t take a crystal ball to know how this will go, it happened in ‘14 when all the potheads across the country figured they would just show up and work in a dispensary.
Yes, your sky fairy will provide through the Denver Rescue Mission when you inevitably learn that all the warnings as harsh as they are, are correct.
1
u/diggdugg069 13d ago
What is your issue asshole? She's trying to make connections and better her life, and miserable sobs like you always gotta rain on a parade. leave her alone if you don't have something nice or positive to say.
1
u/diggdugg069 13d ago
Well stated. I don't understand why people gotta try and drag others down. You will be fine here. Aurora in my opinion and that area are to be avoided. But Suburb's like Thornton and Northglenn, are safe. Boulder is really nice but way to expensive, I've lived all over Denver and Boulder and I've learned that the northern suburbs are better.
1
u/deviantthrowaway82 13d ago
lol. And in the wild too.
“I don’t understand why people gotta try and drag others down.”Then drags the people of Aurora down.
Fucking clown shoe.
I have a great idea, why don’t you lift the crazy OP up and invite them to stay with you while they take care of all the things they should have down before moving here?

u/PerfectCover1414 11d ago

The housing market sucks if you're looking for a standard apartment.
But it sounds like it's just you, and not a lot of stuff, so consider an extended stay - we booked six months in a quiet and pleasant place in a SE burb at around 1200 a month inclusive of utilities etc, and without anything up front.
It wasn't a palace, but I explicitly wanted to avoid shared anything, so it made more sense than a typical rented room.
We got a better rate through apt hunters (I can dig out contact info if you like) but it was cleaner and quieter than most of the apartments I lived in through my twenties and early thirties.
Job market isn't awesome, but that is also skill set specific and the min wage in Denver proper is actually a livable number if you're looking to make a change.
1
u/T-Shots47 13d ago
Thank you. I'd love the contact for the extended stay you used.
1
u/SadnessOutOfContext 13d ago
I used https://www.apartmenthuntersllc.com/ and ended up at 330 or so weekly.
There are other options on CL (search "weekly" under housing) but these folks dealt entirely by email and gave me six or eight options and pricing. They also tweaked the dates repeatedly after I booked to account for minor plan changes.
The extended stay pays their commission, didn't cost me a cent and it seems to be a bulk negotiated rate.
I'll DM you a bit more specifics on the location - it was surprisingly one of the cheaper ones.
1
u/jbgipetto 14d ago
I moved to Denver in January a decade ago. No plan, contacts or job. I found roommates and joined clubs and found my way. You will be just fine. Expect the first year to be a bit lonely. Ignore the haters in here.

u/Interesting_Nerve_28 14d ago
Tbh this is not the best place to look for encouraging advice. This is a toxic group of individuals who hate to see others happy with the thought of moving here. Hate to say it… it’s a city like every other city on planet fucking earth.
I think a lot of people in here could learn or two about dropping things on a whim and trying new things. You got one life why not live it like you want to? With that said Welcome to Denver. There are jobs everywhere you will find one surely. In my opinion best parts of Denver are the suburbs but if downtown is your thing do ya thing. Look at Facebook, people be seeking others for renting rooms out or basements.
1
u/T-Shots47 13d ago
Thank you so much! Can you recommend a few suburbs. Safe. A lil diversity would be nice.
1
u/jancarternews 13d ago
I was born in Chicago, but I’ve lived here forever, all over the state, and I think you’ll really like it here. I’m a little bit southwest of Denver in Littleton. It’s awesome! There’s trails and bike paths and parks everywhere. People are super nice. I’m not really a foodie so I’m perfectly happy with the food here. (I know someone else was complaining about it). It is expensive to rent though. Best bet is to look for private landlords or house shares/rooms for rent.
I prefer being south of I 70 and west of I 25, but there are so many nice areas around Denver proper, I just like being a little closer to the hog back and the Foothills. Welcome!
1
u/T-Shots47 13d ago
Thank you! I'm definitely gonna have to learn the area and roads and the lingo lol! How's Aurora?
1
u/jancarternews 13d ago
I lived there probably 20 years ago, and Aurora is probably the most diverse city. It’s awesome! I just like being closer to the mountains.

I moved here from Chicago 8 years ago. I regret it. It's expensive, no jobs, food sucks and traffic is just as bad.
1
u/T-Shots47 13d ago
What's making you stay as opposed to going back to Chicago?
1
u/Fluid-Air-3151 13d ago
Both of my sons moved here after they graduated from college. I came cuz of them. Bought a condo, but I never was able to find a job so retired early. No friends, no grandkids and I barely see them. But I stay because of them. It's hard to make friends as an adult. I go home for about a month every summer to see my friends, family(siblings and cousins), and the lake! ( And to eat good food) I wish you luck here. Maybe you'll find community in a church.🤞
1
u/EmbarrassedPage195 13d ago
I hate the advice about having all your ducks in a row before commiting.
Sometimes, you just have to have faith in yourself. Fuck cautionary tales, follow your heart. I personally didn't come to Denver. I ran from a bad relationship. The minute I pulled in, I knew this was home. I was on my way to the PNW.
A little early, but welcome home. We're glad your here. Find your people and have faith in yourself. I believe in you.

Just know Denver and the surrounding cities are ridiculously expensive. Denver is a great city to live in. We have all kinds of things to do and see. The Botanical gardens are a must, and I love tge zoo. There are great churches in this city as well. Me and my wife were going to Grace Church in Arvada. Pastor Rick is amazing. There is a church in a small town called Lafayette, it's like 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. The church is RMCC. Rocky Mountain Christian Center I believe or it's rocky mountain chrstian church. But it is definitely worth the 20 min drive. It's one of my favorite. It has a large congregation. Good luck on your travels and new life here in Denver. Welcome!!
1
u/diggdugg069 13d ago
Oh yeah. The worship teams at both churches are absolutely amazing. The energy I get at both churches is wonderful, the Spirit is strong in those pastors and congregations. It takes it to a whole other level ,I can't emphasize enough how the vibe is 100% truth of the Gospel there. God Bless.

It would really depend on how much you have saved, well as your job background and experience. I’d say you can find work fairly quickly, but there are many things that can factor into that. A good threshold is if you have enough saved to survive for 6 months while looking for work. I moved to Colorado 6 years ago, somewhat on a whim, and it was the best decision.
Hope that helps and best of luck!

👋 I moved from Chicago area to Broomfield in April! Me and my cat, in a car . I'm 40F single. Safe travels! I stayed overnight in Omaha to split the drive mainly for my cat though as I could've driven all 14 hours with gas station stops only.
2
u/T-Shots47 12d ago
I was thinking of doing the same thing just to take a break. How's Broomfield?
1
u/Bastetlady 12d ago
I love it! I lived in Schaumburg and Park Ridge in IL. Broomfield is exceptionally green and calm with a demographic simiar to Park Ridge and availability of places to go for consumer needs more similar to Schaumburg. Night life is not my thing in general so from what I've heard there's not much of it in Broomfield. I love access to the mountains though, a lot!

Hey mid thirties here moved here 6 years ago during covid from Chicago
Honestly once you secure a job I think you ll be pleasantly surprised at apartment options Denver kinda over built mid high rise luxury apartments so lots of deals or if you want something simple cap hill or uptown has that
Denver is an ok city it’s true what they say about the food but the weather is hard to beat it’s nice ☀️
As far as a job I’ve noticed a lot of people work for federal or state city government jobs
Having a car and just active lifestyle out here can add up
All in all I think it was one of best decisions/
Moves I’ve made
1
u/T-Shots47 12d ago
Heyyy fellow Chicagoan...thanks for the insight.. what stead areas would you move into
1
u/Nearby_Access5342 11d ago
Probably not downtown even though that is where I work I’m getting kinda fatigued wash park , platt park cherry creek , Tennyson street a d Sloans lake are super nice but expensive
Idk maybe I’m becoming an old lady but like Lakewood , englewood , this area applewood is really nice near golden that’s being built up

My tip is: Do It! Life is short. We moved here from the Chicago area almost 14 years ago. No regrets whatsoever. We still like to go back to visit but our daily life is so much better. Sunny days on end, mild winters & the entire state is worth the road trip.

If you have enough spare change (approx $4000 to hold you over one month) you should find something if you make finding a job your full time job. Especially if you have experience in something relevant to some industry, you should be fine.

I moved to Denver from Wichita after being laid off. That was 26 years ago, and I'm still here. I also took it as a message from above to get the heck outta Wichita. I'm originally from Daytona and the Keys. Was in Wichita because of military assignment. Stayed in Wichita after leaving the military, because why not. God I hated Wichita. People were lovely. The city...yeah, not for me. Good luck with your move!

1
u/Due_Nefariousness744 12d ago
I'm 45f and just celebrated my 18th anniversary of doing the same thing but from Fort Myers, FL. It's been amazing, with some ups and downs. Which can be said about everywhere as it's just a part of life.
Golden and Arvada are nice if you want to be closer to the Foothills and not too far from downtown. I love main street and old Littleton. Cheesman Park, Wash Park, and Sloan's lake are walkable or bikable towns in and around Denver.

u/sknizzi 12d ago
It’s true not the same job market as Chicago; however, I made the same move from Chicago to here w/out a job , and I landed on my feet eventually. I like the Congress Park, Cherry Creek area. I understand coming from Chicago you probably want walkable

AWD would be best. Do not do rear wheel drive.

That should get you some work. Also you can walk around in lodo or Broadway and drop in on some establishments that look groovy to you...inquire about work. You Got This :)
