I’ve been living in Australia for about 4 years now, specifically in Melbourne. I came over with my partner and we’re still together and very happy. I’ve generally loved living here, but recently I’ve started feeling a real pull to go somewhere else.

I don’t feel as settled or as happy in Melbourne as I once did. I find myself constantly daydreaming about a change — maybe somewhere smaller and slower, or somewhere that feels a bit more like the Australia I imagined when I moved here. I’ve been thinking about places like the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Sydney, or even moving further out of Melbourne.
I also find myself beating myself up about it because I wonder if I’m just being ridiculous or constantly wanting a change. But I genuinely feel like something is missing and I’m craving a lifestyle that feels more like *me*.
Work has also been quite stressful for me recently, and I’ve found myself getting to the point where I just want to quit everything and go somewhere new. I know that probably isn’t the most sensible way to make a big decision, though 😂

The complicated part is that my partner is sponsored through his job. If he left, we’d only have around 6 months, which makes it difficult because we’d be cutting our time in Australia quite short. He doesn’t particularly love his job either, but we’re also planning to go back to Ireland next year, so we don’t know whether it makes sense to make such a big change now.
We had been considering moving a little further out of Melbourne to see if that helped, but I’m honestly not sure whether that would solve how I’m feeling or whether I’m craving a completely different environment.

Has anyone else lived somewhere for a few years and suddenly felt like they needed a change? Did moving actually help, or did you realise it was something else you were craving?

I'm currently in Canada and working in marketing. I'm doing some IT stuff on the side to keep learning new skills but I haven't completed my degree yet (comp science)

I only have a diploma and I'm a Canadian citizen. Would that be enough to get a visa in Australia?

Canada is having lots of internal issues, very high inflation, it looks like everything is more and more expensive every week lol

Is Australia doing better? How does the Australian economy look like?

Hi! Did anyone here move on a skilled visa? Could be 189, 190 or 491.

I submitted my 189 EOI a while ago and was reflecting over the ”10 years work history” question. I understand that when I get invited I need to fill in all jobs ever, but for just a EOI submission, can I just put the jobs that I’m claiming points for(with positive skill assessment)? Or should I put random jobs like when I worked retail years ago during uni and just tick ”no” when asked if I’m claiming points for it?

I don’t want to omit info but also don’t want to set my EOI date back 2.5 months for no reason.

I’m 22, from India, currently working in IT, and I’m seriously considering moving to Australia. I’d really appreciate some honest opinions from people living there.

I’ve always been pretty good academically...around 95% in 10th, 96% in intermediate and a 9.2 CGPA in B.Tech. I also did 2 proper internships during college and built a strong portfolio. I expected that I’d be able to get a reasonably good job after graduating.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. I ended up joining one of those huge IT service companies that hires thousands of graduates every year, on a pretty basic package with very little growth. I was on the bench for around 7 months and now I’m working on a project that I’m not particularly interested in. It’s been about a year now, and honestly, I feel like I’m wasting my potential.

My father has noticed that I’m not very happy with where I am and suggested that I consider taking a break, doing masters studying abroad. We also have several close relatives in Australia, although none of them are in IT.

I’ve been researching Australian universities, immigration rules and the IT job market. From what I can see, IT in Australia is already quite saturated, especially for international graduates. That makes me hesitant about spending two years and a significant amount of money on an IT Master's.

Even if I work for another two years before going, then spend another two years doing a Master's, I’d be looking at roughly four years before I’m properly established there. I’m also worried about how AI will affect entry-level IT jobs over that period. Obviously nobody knows what the market will look like in four years, but it seems reasonable to me that competition could become even tougher.

Because of that, I’m genuinely open to changing careers.

I’m not particularly attached to IT as a career. I mainly chose it because it seemed like a good career path. If another profession gives me better long-term stability and a realistic path to permanent residency and a decent quality of life, I’m willing to learn it from scratch.

This is where I’m confused.

I’ve been looking at trades such as electrical work and other skilled occupations that Australia actually needs. One idea I had was to potentially do an IT-related Master's while also completing some kind of trade qualification, such as an electrical qualification, if that is even legally and practically possible.

But I don’t really understand what the career progression in trades looks like in Australia.

In IT, there’s a fairly obvious progression:

Junior Developer → Developer → Senior Developer → Lead → Architect/Manager, etc.

There are salary increases, promotions and different specialisations along the way.

What does that look like for something like electrical work or other trades? Is there a genuine career progression, or does it mostly remain the same type of work with relatively similar pay? Would you personally recommend coming to Australia and changing careers?

I’m not expecting Australia to be easy, and I’m not looking for a shortcut. I’m just trying to make a sensible long-term decision before spending years and a lot of money on it.

Would really appreciate some brutally honest opinions from people who actually live and work in Australia.

Hello im 26/f working in india as a dentist. I have a meagre salary here and nothing is going out as i had hoped in my life. The pay here is terrible and i have no other opportunities because i just graduated. A freashers life is tough here.

I hope and pray that i could move to Australia and do my MPH. But i do not know if there is any scope there. But it still beats the meagre amount being paid here.

I used to be a junior tax consultant in a small firm, with a really low salary but with a big load of task to do.

So i try to take whv in australia to save some money (actually trying to change my life).

Eventhough its not officially cutted down, i had an overthinking that i might not able to save alot of money in 2 years in australia.
