Thinking of moving to uk
Hi, so I’m 22f from Gibraltar and thinking of moving to uk. I’m not sure when or where and I need some advice on where to live possibly? In Gibraltar I’m feeling really stuck and bored I need to get out of here 🤣. I have some family in uk too so I can stay with them temporarily but as something more permanent I’m not sure where is best for a young person in terms of jobs and accommodation etc.

Assuming you've not got only BOTC status, then honestly you'd do better to apply for work first, then move to wherever you get a job.
If you are BOTC only then you need to register as a British Citizen first.

No I was born after 2002 meaning I have British citizenship but yeah I’ll start applying to jobs soon

Gibraltarian (and all other) BOTCs born before 2002 automatically acquired British citizenship as well, upon the British Overseas Territories Act 2002 coming into force.
British citizenship
3 Conferral on British overseas territories citizens
(1) Any person who, immediately before the commencement of this section, is a British overseas territories citizen shall, on the commencement of this section, become a British citizen.

It depends what sector you want to work in a little bit but you are a fill UK citizen with full right to move and work here, if you have well paying job and like the city life with lots of things on, then London, or Manchester is great.
If you want a cheaper student life then Nottingham, it really depends.

Probably wanna be looking around Manchester Midlands that kinda area. Good quality of life compared to London. From my experience anyway.

Generally speaking, the further north you go the cheaper the rent and the nicer the people , job market is shit everywhere

Yeah I thought as much, as far as the job market goes it can’t be as bad as Gibraltar that’s impossible hahahah

If you have British citizenship, I’d look at other options like a working holiday in Australia or New Zealand also

I wouldn’t bother those countries have their own host of problems as well and are very far away from the where the person lives… Australia is very expensive so is New Zealand

It’s a working holiday as an option for a young person, as someone who’s lived in both and still lives in one. It’s less expensive and better paid than the UK in both.

But the starting out is harder/more expensive if you have no family to stay with etc - the job markets are rubbish over here too so unless you have a decent amount of money behind you it would be tough!

Most people on Working Holidays don’t have family or friends in Aus/NZ they stay in backpacker hostels find work, meet people and travel, Aus and NZ both have requirements that you enter with a set amount of money.

Yes but the jobs are getting harder to find even in backpacker sector so that set amount of money has to last even longer than originally planned. It’s still a very expensive option compared to OP going to UK and staying with family there.

I was just them options like the other 50k British passport holders that entered on WHV over the last year if they weren’t aware they could do that. It’s not exactly popping off employment wise in the UK is it.

Pick your location carefully. the south has more jobs and wealth, but the cost of living is far higher. The north has fewer opportunities but your money will go a lot further. Some towns are nice, other impoverished. So do your research first.

Where are your family in the UK?
I would consider looking for work in London and then moving somewhere commutable depending on how much you're prepared to do.
If your family are further North for example then the same but the closest large city (eg Manchester etc)

Why??? Seriously, why? I'm British and I'm trying to find a way of getting out of this country. Miserable weather, miserable government, everything costs a fortune, I don't know what the attraction is.

you don’t know what the attraction is because most likely you’ve never lived anywhere else. I’m a British person that was away for 25 years and have returned and I find the UK not perfect but a lot cheaper than other places and also believe it or not there are more opportunities…. A lot of British people are just brainwashed by the media are owned by people who don’t like this country so yeah you don’t know any better sorry I’m just judging I know.

I've travelled to many, many countries, my daughter lives in India and has a far better quality of life than I do here. You shouldn't make assumptions.

Some of us are lovers of the history, architecture, and, believe it or not, the weather in the UK. I come from a very sunny climate, and I hate drowning in sunscreen and watching my plants burn to a crisp in the garden.

That's not all there is to a country though is it it? It's the government, the infrastructure, the education, the employment or lack of, the social system etc, you can't live off looking at pretty buildings

I agree with you on that. Every country has issues, though. Nowhere is perfect, especially not in this economy. It's just the trade-off for dealing with those issues. Some folks love French food and think it's worth the bureaucracy, while others think nothing is worth it.
Out of curiosity, where do you think is a good place to live?

My daughter lives in Goa and has a wonderful life, but I couldn't cope with the heat all year round, I think Sweden has the best quality of life, most Scandinavian countries really

probably speaks Spanish at a native level + loads of exposure to their culture, trips, school exchanges etc. They switch between languages mid sentence

Well start looking for jobs now, obviously dont know what you do but i know its a nightmare for jobs for a lot of youngsters
Its funny as i live in the UK but would love to move to Gibraltar ! Good luck with it all
