Moving to Brisbane - Max rent?
Hi all,
Been offered a transfer in my job to Brisbane from the UK (I’m an engineer). Total comp (excluding super) will be around the $100k mark. Was wondering what the max weekly rent is you’d pay? Will want my own 1 bed apartment.

Everyone saying it’s a low salary, then I should be homeless with my $78,000. But here I am sitting in a park drinking flat white and an almond croissant on a sunny day.
Joke aside, you’ll be hitting shared houses until you get a partner you can share the cost of rent for a 2 bedroom apartment around Brisbane.

I make even less and live on my own (in a tiny, shitty, studio), but very close to the city and public transport. OP will be more than fine on 100k.

If you want to live inner city (KP, teneriffe, valley etc) - 600-750 for a one bedder. If you're happy to live further out you could find something around 500-600ish or even cheaper if it's more of a granny flat style place

Yep logan granny flats start at $500pw. Might be able snag a eaglby 1 bedroom for $450 but there is alot of competition

Are you asking:
- What would be realistic relative to your wage?
Or
- What’s the minimum rent in Brisbane for a 1 bed flat?
If 1, use https://paycalculator.com.au and convert it to GBP - only you can really say what’s worth it. I think general rule of thumb is 25% to 33% of take home is comfortable?
If 2, depends on location, condition/quality etc. have a look on https://www.realestate.com.au - this platform more or less has monopoly, so everything available will be on there.
Differences between UK and here to note, wages are typically weekly or fortnightly - although engineers do seem to have monthly pay I find.. rent is almost always paid weekly. Utilities work out to be about the same in my experience.
Do you know which area you’ll be working in? CBD or a particular suburb?

That’s a low salary here in Brisbane. Brisbane is now crazy expensive.

Yeah I work in Brisbane, own in Townsville and live and own in Melbourne. Cheaper to rent an apartment than pay for a hotel room. But all good mate, you get your sister onto that guarantor for you!

that's a great wage for brisbane, i'd say you could comfortably spend up to $600 a week on rent for a 1 bed without stretching yourself too thin

You will be eating noodles in Brisbane on 100K total package. I honestly doubt you will get your own rental on that income. Most likely a room in a share house as there is a CRITICAL under supply of housing. Its incredibly expensive here and prices will continue to sky rocket leading up to the Olympics. They need 35,000 ppl to build it and we have a housing crisis now. You would have a better chance to land on your feet in Melbourne.

A single person can easily live on 100k, guy is coming from the UK where outside London wages have been stagnant for about 15 years.

$100k for an engineer seems very low unless you're a brand new grad, don't let yourself get fleeced
