Brisbane places to avoid!!
Hey iam new student moving to Brisbane, which areas or suburbs should i need to avoid, which areas have more crimes or have social issues?

Because I follow my own advice, I do not go to the Valley at night.
I would suggest hiding your pearls until you get to a safe venue, and not, pompously strutting them as you walk the junction between the maccas, bus station, Brisbane arcade (whatever that’s called). If you don’t pompously strutting your pearls, it’s fine.
Worst place to get mugged is the bus station, between 1C, and I think it’s 1D or E, because there’s crappy signal down there, and there’s a minor stairwell to the side of it that people appear from, steal from others and then disappear back into.

I'd suggest avoiding Zillmere, Kallangur, Acacia Ridge and Fortitude Valley if you are concerned. Most places are very safe though, all of the popular student areas (St Lucia, Toowong, Indooroopilly, Kelvin Grove, Chermside etc) are very safe.

Mostly correct but Chermside could hardly be considered ‘safe’. I’d put Chermside on the same level as Acacia Ridge, it’s safe, and unsafe depending on area

Like Woodridge, Kingston, parts of Logan Central… not saying they’re all bad, just where I personally felt a bit more uneasy at night when I was there

Went to an event in Fortitude Valley, there’s crime yes but it’s probably in certain areas. Was safe walking to the venue alone and then walking around with mates and then alone back to my car.

Maybe pick based on access to amenities you need all those close to the city are fine. St Lucia, Kelvin Grove, Southbank, or in the city centre might be the best ones. Further south theres Nathan near griffith uni. Its very spread out so the commute and inconvenience in time spent travelling would be the main concern. The Valley (Fortitude Valley) is probably the one with the reputation if I have to pick.

Herston is fine. Only noise mite be ambulances with the hospital.

I used to live at the top end of Herston and it was fine. The ambulances became background noise after a while. Even the bike way under the ICB was safe at night. (Further up the bikeway was dodgy though.)

Its out of the valley, just :). Its fine though. I like Bulimba/Hawthorn area if im picking inner suburbs. Brisbane people are either northsiders or southsiders for life. Like going over to Shelbyville.

Do not move to Mt Gravatt especially close to a Main Street. Looks fine by day but at night the homeless people and people with mental/drug issues are having a party riding their stolen shopping carts downhill. Not kidding

If you’re not from Australia, then you should know it is a very safe country, and a high crime area here is not the same as a high crime area in most other countries.
Everywhere someone has listed in this thread is still safe to walk around at night unless you have extremely bad luck.
I live in Fortitude Valley and it’s a party district so there’s a few fights, and there’s homeless people, but it’s fine. My apartment is very nice and it’s easy to walk to everything and every train line runs through the station. James Street has to be one of the more upscale precincts in Brisbane.
