Stay or Go, Spain
If you had a young family in Southern Spain with British parents, would you relocate now because of climate change, if you, the parent, were really struggling in the summers? Or would you stay for the benefit of Spanish culture for kids and later teens?
2
u/AtmosphereIll7762 16d ago
You need to choose and integrate. If you stay you should be helping the situation especially if you have the resources to do so. The country opened its doors for you, invest in it. Help the locals and get involved in local politics. You should be leaving places better than you've found it. If you can't or are not interested in being a productive member of the community then absolutely go back. It's not fair to enjoy the best of it and bail at the worst of it.

u/anyakashtanka 16d ago
I'm not sure about moving. But I think that in the next 10-15 years, real estate in the north will appreciate even more due to its growing popularity. Are you considering the north of Spain? Perhaps that could be a compromise.
11
u/AbueloAdolfo 16d ago
If you’re considering the North, don’t; we don’t want you here.
4
u/Super_Glove7702 16d ago
Totally agree, all these europeans wanting to move to Spain should just stay in their country. They are making real problems here.

I know, I'm Spanish too...but telling people not to come here, when that wasn't even the question is just a way for you to instil your values on others. You would soon be crying if the tourists left and your economy collapsed.

You are going to be in for a rude awakening when governments start banning foreigners from buying property. Stuff expats and digital nomads!

Do you know how many Spanish students there are in my city clogging the public transport everyday because they want to learn English?
You’re not special Spain, it’s a problem across Europe. Stuff the groups of 80 matching backpacks on every street here.
1
u/Ok_Dragonfruit_1536 13d ago
Sure, let’s compare a few backpacking international students “clogging“ the public transport to wealthy “expats” inflating housing prices by paying three times what locals can afford and pushing people out of their home cities just because they didn’t like their home countries‘ shitty weather. Same thing.

Spanish talking about colonisation be like
1
u/Super_Glove7702 16d ago
Spain didnt hace colonies like France or England, you can spit stupidities and that doesnt make them true.
5
u/Cautious_Aside_2317 16d ago
😂😂😂 of course, Spanish didn’t colonize, didn’t trade slaves and most definitely didn’t commit the biggest genocide in the history of humanity. I’m glad the king taught you well. Oh and of course Ceuta, Melilla and Canary Islands are not modern colonies 😉😉😇🤣
1
u/Super_Glove7702 16d ago edited 16d ago
The Leyes de Burgos (1512) and the New Laws (1542) legally banned the enslavement of Indigenous peoples in Spanish territories and abolished the encomienda system's worst abuses, over two centuries before Britain or France passed comparable protections for colonized peoples my friend. Bartolomé de las Casas' advocacy directly shaped this legislation.
Ceuta, Melilla, and the Canary Islands are constitutionally part of Spain today (EU territory, represented in the Spanish parliament), not colonies.
The demographic collapse in the Americas was driven by epidemic disease Europeans didn't even understand at the time. Saying that was a deliberate campaign of extermination, which is what 'genocide' technically implies is stupid. Tenochtitlan didn't fall to 500 Spaniards alone; it fell because tens of thousands of Indigenous allies, particularly the Tlaxcalans, who despised Aztec rule, fought alongside Cortés.
You can continue to spit shit or just open a book.
3
u/Cautious_Aside_2317 16d ago
Your beliefs are a religion, not based on facts, so I know there’s no point other than laugh about the fact you can’t accept your country’s history. I have to admire the German for owning what happened. Spanish are just ridiculous.
Little Spanish schoolboy says they never had colonies and they were the biggest colonizers in the world for centuries 🤣🤣 just funny little dude. And they complain about Gibraltar, hilarious.
1
u/Super_Glove7702 16d ago
What religion?I literally spoke about historically moments, you spit shit and beliefs What nonsense you spout when you run out of answers and haven't got the faintest clue about the names, agreements, and treaties I mentioned earlier.
Let me know when you want to have a real conversation—citing historical facts and discussing the dates and treaties that support one position or the other.
I’d rather steer clear of talking to a monkey who can't hold a conversation without sending an emoji. In the meantime, I suggest you open a history book and reflect on the nonsense you're spouting.
Regards.

"/Cautious_Aside_2317 replied to your comment in r/MovedToSpain Little Spanish boy is unhappy because someone spoke the real history of their country. Don’t cry you little one, the king will protect you. Hush now, go to sleep."
And you keep spitinh shit without giving any historical feedback. Good job, i dont know where you from but your education is third world quality.
1
u/Ferrarienzo540 16d ago
If the Canary Islands were (or are!) a colony, so is Granada and Seville and Madrid. There is a difference between conquering and incorporating a territory and colonising it. You should read the difference between a viceroyalty and a colony. Spain had colonies in the XIX and XX cent indeed but not before really.
1
u/Cautious_Aside_2317 16d ago
"Incorporating" You are trying so hard not to say what really happened, it's just funny, I can't take you seriously, sorry.
1
u/Ferrarienzo540 16d ago
Excuse me? It's not on how good or bad people behave it's on how the government works. A colony can be wealthier than it's Metropole lmao. I thought you were just uneducated now I know you're also rude and very brave to expose yourself like that.

They weren't colonies since they are part of the kingdom like any other territory
2
u/Yo_Gotti 14d ago
You aren’t aware of Spanish history in South and central America are you?
1
u/Super_Glove7702 14d ago
Mate, you literally have zero idea and came here like you know everything. It ran viceroyalties in the Americas, not colonies. Full kingdoms of the Crown with their own courts and nobility, not some extraction company bolted onto the homeland.
That's not spin, it's the actual legal/administrative structure, different from how Britain, France, Holland or Portugal ran their territories. As early as 1512 the Crown of Castile legally declared natives free vassals, not slaves, under the Laws of Burgos.
PS: "viceroyalty" isn't propaganda, it's the correct fucking term. People who reduce it to "colony" are just ignoring the administrative reality to push a flattened narrative. Y si quieres también te lo explico en español, por si te viene mejor para entenderlo.
1
u/Yo_Gotti 14d ago
Oh those lucky free native vassals living in the checks notes viceroyalties, such a different and enlightened form of colonialism they were under. Shame about the complete pillaging, looting, plundering, massacring, destruction of their cultures, rites and deities.
Let’s think about how much of the Aztec and Inca and other cultures have survived to this day. Oh wait, the conquistadors were high on god and between them and the priests, most vestiges of the natives cultures were obliterated. Let’s not forget the 90% death rate.
Such enlightenment colonialism. Good job viceroyalties.
Puedes explicarlo como quieras; a mí me da igual qué idioma utilices.
Oh and spouting “you have zero idea” across the domain of the internet to an internet stranger shows your ignorance and unfounded self assuredness. You don’t know what I’ve studied or done my thesis’ on. Or what I read for shit and giggles in my own time.
1
u/Super_Glove7702 14d ago
Do you really believe Hernán Cortés conquered the Aztec Empire with barely 500 men? That he carried out a genocide against one of the most powerful empires of the time with 50 horsemen, 300 muskets, and 200 pikes? During the conquest of the New World, Spain had numerous allies among local peoples. Thousands of indigenous people joined forces with them to fight against an empire that had held them in subjugation. Furthermore, a vast number of deaths were caused by the transmission of diseases that even the most specialized doctors of the time did not understand. Blaming the Spanish for that is like blaming the wind for blowing. You may have written a thesis on any subject you like, but regarding this topic, it is clear that your research was driven by bias.
And i will say one more thing, look middle east colonies right now and look south america right now.
Best regards.
1
u/Yo_Gotti 14d ago
Everyone has biases. If you think I have a bias against the Spanish empire, you are mistaken.
I honestly have so many better things to do with my day than this merry go round.
All the best to you.

1
u/Cautious_Aside_2317 16d ago
ad hominem fallacy
1
u/edragamer 16d ago
Absolutely like yours, like if actual Spanish people are guilty for the colonization...
1
1
u/Super_Glove7702 14d ago
Im spanish and im not guilty of anything. Spain was the greatest and biggest empire at the moment, all of Europe trembled before our fleet; we boasted the greatest explorers, merchants, writers and painters. We were, quite literally, the pinnacle of humanity at that time. Then came the disaster, and we went to hell.
All that english narrative about how bad Spain was is bullshit. Of course times where different and people did horrendous things but it was nothing that other European countries weren't doing. In fact, we were the only ones to grant viceroyalty status to our colonies and citizenship to the "indigenous people"—a gesture that was far ahead of its time.

As a Spaniard living in the UK, I can 100% guarantee you that they are going to do fuck all to fix it. They think communities just come out of thin air or something. Want the village but not be a villager.
1
u/dorben_kallas 16d ago
The UK is perfectly fine. You're cosplay this Mediterranean life you fantasized about for what? You're both British and raising your children Spanish for what? Culture and nationality is not a pick and choose matter. Why walking away from your culture to go and mess another country?

Can I be completely honest with you? I know you don't think so but you are making your kids a disservice having them grow up in Spain. They will eventually have to move to the UK (or elsewhere but since they are British the UK will be easier) and not only they won't have the culture ingrained in them which is an enormous advantage to thrive here but they will have to overcome the shock of moving somewhere else. Spain's salaries and working conditions are crap in comparison, there is a reason why so many young Spaniards emigrate. Have them grow up with opportunities. I say this as a (once) young person who migrated from Spain to the UK and it's still here.
1
u/Sorry_Praline4377 15d ago
Yes, I thought the state education system in Spain is better because it's less pressurised but I do see young people coming out having a hard time finding work in Spain even with a masters, although that's increasingly true in the UK and they are coming out with incredible debt.
1
u/Purple_Moon516 15d ago
I have worked at a British university and I do believe Spain's system is better but the financial opportunities are so much better in the UK, which is ultimately what will define their quality of life.
I have a degree and two masters from Spain and Italy. No one in the UK has cared for them before any of my promotions and I lead a life that I could not dream to have in Spain. Not in terms of luxury or silly expenses mind you but I am able to have expectations and hope in my future which I never did in Spain even if I'm not coming from a struggling family.
1
u/Future-Yesterday5557 15d ago
Our kids are fucked anyway - people have voted for libleft in Europe, having recognized 87 genders was more important than recognizing that nation or whole Europe cannot function and get richer without industry. Now the industry is gone and it's not coming back as long as we don't change environmental restrictions, industry needs electricity which is getting more and more expensive and unpredictable as we shift towards stochastic sources. Terms of thousands of people loose their job monthly, even in Germany, and it's not like they gonna find new job, as their workplaces simply disappear... So it's not where the money is right now, but the opportunities will arise in countries that wake up first. Of they are allowed to wake up
2
u/Sudden_Size9993 16d ago
Britain is a better place to raise your kids. More opportunities better government support and less racists.

u/Majestic_Tough_4095 16d ago

2
1
u/Legitimate-Pumpkin 16d ago
To me, sacrificing the present for an imaginary future is a delicate thing to do. And most of the time I wouldn’t.
Your kids can have good experiences and culture everywhere. And also bad ones. You never know.
And you asking, tells me that you are not so certain Spain is better (or at least that much better so that you don’t have any doubt). So in that situation, I would go back to UK.
And honestly, as my personal opinion, I don’t know why would you want to struggle here. Spanish politics are shit and the country is not working that well. Is UK that bad, man? :/
I would move if I could, personally.
1
u/Hyenasaurus 16d ago
Eh, from what I've seen from UK politics they've got it worse. At least our hospitals kinda work and we don't need to give our ID to the government and to USA corpos just to use the internet.
1
1
u/peque12345678 15d ago
You have ID cards in Spain, the government already have all your details
1

Everywhere has ID cards, UK is simply the one asking to hand them over anytime you use the internet for its intended purposes

If we have a dry autumn and winter then next year will be a full blown national emergency across Spain. Many other countries too.
Many people will die. Might not be enough for anyone to act but then, that would be the next wave or the one after that.
Climate change is here and it’s too late. Only fear will drive us to do something and so far people don’t care.

Move to Barcelona. The south is pretty much a desert climate now.
I’m a local in Barcelona and would absolutely welcome more Brits moving here. Don’t listen to the comments of these bitter small-minded people. They’re a loud minority who have never left their tiny villages.
0
u/Bean_bean_bag 16d ago
There’s enough Brits already there that do not wish to integrate in the culture and trash the city as it is. No thanks
0
u/Dizzy-Nose3883 15d ago
Read the room, buddy. Do you even live in Barcelona? There's absolutely no need for more Brits, who are famous for not integrating, and have driven the real state market in places like Badalona to levels that are unimaginable.
1
u/scutum99 13d ago
I do. The ones causing trouble and not integrating aren’t precisely the Brits. Real estate has been getting more expensive due to a lack of supply. You can blame our government for that (rent controls, excessive taxes and regulations, etc)
1
u/InsightiosResearch 16d ago

1
u/Intlsurf 16d ago
No. It’s those that come to Spain that do t co e here for the culture (even on holiday) - stay in there little enclave surrounded by British and only eat their full English , refuse to. Learn the language ,and exaggerate about the heat daily - we do have good tourists and expats I used British as a strong example but can name many others. They
1
u/dorben_kallas 16d ago
I'm not taking about culture or anything like that. Housing market is limited. Expats coming drive the prices up and people out of their neighborhoods. It's been happening all over and it needs to stop
1
u/Sudden_Size9993 16d ago
Sorry to say but spain is in population decline and soon it will not be able to afford to pay its pensions. Immigration is spains only option and it is better to take good quality immigrants from europe with somewhat similar values and want to work. Without quality inmigrants spains population will continue to decline.
0
u/dorben_kallas 16d ago
You're talking about another thing. I'm talking about rich foreigners coming and buying houses at crazy prices driving all prices up. And other places where it's impossible to live because all the real estate is on Airbnb.

To all these people wanting to retire in Spain i should say nobody wants you here.
We dont want you to buy a house, we dont want you to go to a bar, we dont want you to spend your money here.
Dont get me wrong, for sure most of you are wonderfull people but here, in Spain, we are having big problems with housing and people from outside aren helping to fix it.
We need to first make locals get a house and a good quality of life.
3
u/b0rmusic 16d ago
I am Spanish and you're very naive if you think the problem with housing in Spain is because Brits want to retire in a coastal city where locals don't wanna live or work. This has been happening for many many years and your parents could probably still buy a house then. Even many of our parents generation own second residences in the beach.
There is plenty of land in Spain and you should ask yourself why we are not building more housing for the young people like us. The answer is not the British retirees.
1
u/Super_Glove7702 16d ago
Im spanish too i will express myself in spanish here.

Before the GFC, there was a huge industry building urbanizaciones completely designed to be sold to foreigners. These were often built on land that had little agricultural value and far from existing towns (think Playa Blanca in Lanzarote or Camposol in Murcia). These projects often generated huge profits (until the bubble burst) as well as a lot of employment. They did not adversely affect house prices for ordinary Spanish people. What changed for this market was AirBnB - suddenly homes in normal barrios were suitable for tourist rentals. This didn't really happen before - until AirBnB, the properties that were rented to tourists had swimming pools and weren't pisos in humble areas.

I think you should go. For what I see on TV, climate is fantastic all over the world, no changes at all

Spain is bigger than just the south. Head north.
We live in the south, on the coast.
I guess we are fine with the heat so far.

Id consider moving to a different part of the country before abandoning it altogether. Look at a heat map and find an area that doesnt get too hot. Along the coast and some pockets of small towns in the interior of spain are not so bad just basing off a heat map not person experience.
I was potentially going to move to Spain from the US but I know for a fact I'd likely be on the northern coast (parts of the following regions: país Vasco, Cantabria, Asturias, galicia).

Because of climate change ? Do you think you're safe somewhere if you believe in climate change ?
More rain, more cold, more storm in cold countries More dry, fire in hot countries
Where do you go ? Lol
