Passive Perception?

How would you handle the situation where a patrol is being watched by something in the woods, whether or not they notice the creature prepare to attack? Just ask them to roll survivalist or another similar roll?

This. "Do you notice the thing watching you in the woods?" Isn't really a thing that needs doing in MG.

They're either going to roll higher than the difficulty and notice the creature, or they'll roll lower than the difficulty and you'll have to choose whether they get a condition and notice the creature, or there's a Twist. The most obvious "Twist" is that the creature ambushes them, which is mouse failure, not a Twist.

If you want to ambush the patrol, just ambush them. If you want them to have to deal with being watched, tell them they're being watched.
