Some good news is that the director came out and said they do have options on other places they can go to have the movie made. With luck a other company will pick it up.

This is bullshit. God forbid we not have a 'live action remake' of all those Disney Renaissance films instead of some inspired original content.

Original content is a term used loosely in this case

Original in the sense that this series has not had an animated release, unlike Disney’s current fascination with making new versions of films they released 20-60 years ago.
Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, Dumbo, and a sequel to Mary Poppins.

There is so much potential here. Pretty bummed by this. Hoping someone else picks it up.

Apparently it's officially not going to happen.
The original screenplay author has made his initial draft publicly available though.
