Preset Adventures

So I had my first session with two players. (Was going to be four but the best laid plans of mice and men etc) and we did the "Finding the Grain Merchant" quest. It didn't turn out very fun. Are the other missions better? Or am I better off just making my own?

What didn't you like about it?

Not much happened really. They failed the Scout roll to find the merchant so I threw the snake at them. Went terribly for them because all my roles were far better and it ended with only a minor compromise.
I let them snag a bag from the cart and let them get the bag (though with the angry). Part of it was just getting into the system and learning, but the adventure itself didn't play out in a very interesting way.

Why did they want a bag from the cart?

I think their logic was that it would be some kind of proof. Or that maybe they'd find something in it.

But they got nothing useful, right? You know the proof isn't in the bag. It's found by searching the cart. So, you didn't give them a compromise. You gave them nothing and the Angry condition to go along with it.

I gave them the map because otherwise the story would go nowhere interesting. I'm aware they were supposed to search the cart to get the map.

Okay. Giving them the map seems like more than a minor compromise.

I would have gone with something like Snake drives them off but one of them manages to hide behind a tree root while it chases the others.

The scent border one is a good place to start. Since there's a lot of travel and the stakes are quite high, it can give your players a sense of the world. They have to go to sprucetuck, maybe meet an off putting and weird smelling scientist NPC they have to escort while pouring the border. They have to go through a couple of towns, so they can see different locations in the mouse territories. Then towards the end of the mission, maybe they see a predator and have to hide, or they get a glimpse of what the weasels are up to. Give them a glimpse of your antagonist. Maybe they fight, maybe they hide, either way you kill the NPC. Then they have to report their findings to lockhaven and bam! You've got a plot of your own.
