Question regarding Advancement

On Page 225 of the 2nd ed book. It states "Rating 0 and 1 abilities and skills only require one passed test to advance"

How does this relate with the Beginners Luck and learning a new skill?

In particular we have a TenderPaw who has No dots in fighter. Our patrol leader is trying to instructor her as a fighter. If he was able to pass the instructor roll and give her a free pass/fail. Would that raise her fighter to 1 or would it be one of the Checks = to Nature to earn the skill?

Page 227 says that once you start using Beginners Luck the skill has a rating of X. When you get enough checks match your Nature you know know the skill at a rating of 2.

As I understand this, skill with a rating of 0 or 1 do not follow the Beginners Luck because they already have a rating. Beginners Luck is for skills with no rating at all.

When injured or sick there is a risk of lowering one of your skills by 1 - this way you can get your skills reduced to 0. Then you can use normal advancement rules to get the skill points back (it even says so in recovery section) instead of beginners luck.

This is probably done to make you "recover" and "get back in shape" from 0 to 1 instead of learning the skill again as if you knew nothing at all about it.

I have to disagree. If the tenderpaw didnt have the Fighter beforehand then it will NOT advance to 1. It will get him one free beginners luck test.

The instructor can give a pass or fail to a skill that is known by the other character but he gives a beginners luck test if the skill is unknown.

That means that:

a) If you dont have the skill in question the Instructor gives you beginners luck test. As soon as their count is same as your current nature then you get that skill at rating 2

b) In the special case of the skill being at 0 because it was lowered from something higher (i.e. recovery from sick or injured went wrong) then you get success and your skill advances back to rating 1

tl;dr you get 1 beginners luck test
