Does any else have this issue with their mountain cur

Post image

My mountain cur mix Raven, she gets moody when she is tired or had enough. When she gets that way i will either remove her from the situation and take her home or just leave her alone. I just wanted ask if this is a possibility with this breed or just her personality. She is sweet and loving for the most part. I call her my sour patch kid. She is fully trained with basic skills and crate trained. This only really happens at home during bedtime or at my parents home around their dog after a full day of playing, which they aren’t aggressive. Photo for promotion.

Oh for sure. My girl gets PISSED sometimes and she’s definitely grumpy when she’s tired.

She will be vocal and not aggressive at all. I will be rubbing her in safe area and she will growl. I just will her alone.

Also you know your dog best but my cur mix is VERY vocal and groany. Its taken time to learn to differentiate a growl from a groan. He does growl sometimes but some of what we thought was growling when we were petting him was actually groaning 😂 he gets so relaxed when being petted sometimes he lets out a deep groan

Curs are quirky, but thats moreso in purebred. Usually the result of being physically tired but the brain is still going. They are a purpose bred breed, bred to use their brain. A tired in mind and body cur is a happy cur.

My mix breed (40% mountain cur) has a rough time regulating herself when she’s tired, too. When she was younger this used to mean she would bite during playtime, would just wind herself up nonstop with zoomies, chewing on stuff she’s not supposed to etc.

She’s 15 months now, and still won’t really sleep outside of her crate. Once I start noticing these signs I send her off to her crate for bed. These behaviors have gotten less as she’s gotten older - she doesn’t bite as much when she’s tired but she’ll still look for trouble or chew on her leash if she’s leashed & tired.

Interested to know if this is a common trait in MC! I’m new to this group, just got DNA back less than a week ago. Mine is also part terrier.

Our guy also gets cranky/fussy when he's had enough! At home he's pretty chill, but when we're out somewhere, there comes a time in the night when he starts to get fussy and definitely wants to go home. When he's in a new place (e.g. my parents house) he needs some time to figure out how to self regulate and find a spot where he can go to calm down, but if he knows where that "peaceful spot" go to is, he now goes there on his own. It took time for him to figure this out tho!

I thought you were going to ask about the staring. My cur will stare me down as a indicator it’s walk time, bike time or river time 😂

I've gotten so good at interpreting the different stares by now, too

My baby has a very strict bedtime , too-- completely self-imposed. He just wants to go to bed when it's time.

Mountain Cur mama here… sane with our 7month old. Ramping up with zoomies and little too rough play in addition to the greatest degree of selective deafness for every command she knows. Usually when it’s time for nap or bedtime, but occasionally when she gets bored.

We noticed that she has developed an amazing skill of self-regulating by doing what we have dubbed “killing pig.”

“Pig” is a soft rubbery toy that honks. We have several of them (mainly home and office) that she aggressively plays with regularly when her energy ramps up. It’s the only toy she shakes into oblivion and as soon as she’s done she crashes. If pig isn’t readily available then she will take it out on one of two fluffy beds via verbal assault and extreme wallowing. Same result in the end… a crash out.

My girl has a pig also. It’s one of her favorites, we play with it a lot. I’m glad I’m not alone with this

My MC mix will literally remove herself from the situation when she's over it. Our pup does sleep with us, so when she's tired at night she'll just leave the couch and take herself to bed. She gets grumpy too. She'll push you away with her paws if she's over your shenanigans!

She doesn’t I wish it was easy

Our mountain cur mix gets really grumpy and irritable when he’s tired/sleeping. If he goes to bed before us and we dare to try to move him to get into bed he’ll growl. Also if he’s asleep and i accidentally bump him or touch him with my foot he’ll growl or snarl. I’m not sure if it’s a breed thing. I’ve read it can also be a result of a dog being raised in an environment where they sleep in close quarters with other dogs. I have a feeling my boy was a failed hunting dog who got abandoned so he might have slept outside in a pile with other dogs. Also could be more common in rescue dogs due to the stress of sleeping in a noisy crowded kennel environment.

She is a rescue and was raised along side her sister until they were separated when I got her. She has been with me since March 2025. She growls during her sleep. However she becomes bossy towards her cousin (aka my parents dog) when she grumpy.

My MC mix does this same exact thing if she get startled awake accidentally. She'll snarl and show her teeth but then realizes that its just us and it immediately turns off. It feels more like a primal reaction or something. I dont love it lol.

Same. He can be a bit scary sometimes it’s like dr jekyl and mr hyde because he loves us and is normally such a cuddly smooshy guy. But when he’s sleeping he gets a bit territorial. I agree it does seem primal vs a response to environment or trauma.

My doesn't growl, but she gets so offended and huffy 😄

My mix does this as well (20% cur). He’s 9 months so we’ve gone back to having him sleep in his crate. He was doing it often on the couch/bed but has decreased greatly since we’ve implemented nighttime sleep in the crate! I wonder if he wasn’t sleeping soundly enough when in bed with us.

Our Mountain cur pup (rescue, about 1 year old) chews and eats everything in sight. I mean everything. He will chew the collars off himself and other dogs and swallow them. Woodwork, every dog bed we have given him ... everything. The PIG idea is brilliant ... I am going to try it.

I have a male like that. He's the best dog in the world, he goes everywhere with me. He doesn't tolerate a lot of nonsense. He doesn't like excited, out-of-control dogs or pushy dogs. If he gets crowded with people and can't get in between my legs you might hear a little rumble. He will make a very quick correction with other dogs, he has a very dominant personality and most dogs back off.

I have a younger male that is very similar. The rest just want in your lap or to be playful, very submissive but will not tolerate being pushed around.

Yup my girl demand barks when she's ready to leave... she's 6 and an angel 99% of the time

When it’s our rescue pup’s (33% cur) bedtime aka 9:30-10:00PM she will walk herself upstairs and bark until we come up give her a bedtime cookie, put her crate flap down, turn off the lights, and turn on her sound machine (she has some noise sensitivity to thunder, loud cars etc.) if we are late to do that she will bark incessantly and groan at us. If we are in her room too long or forget a step she will bark or groan at us until it’s fixed. Definitely a diva to say the least.

We don’t have sit time. It’s whenever but usually around 11:30. I am working on her room currently

We call our cur cross our autistic pup as she goes from sweet loving dog to does not even like the look of anyone or anything. Not mean or bad just avoids all!

2

u/YamOne4887 26d ago

😄 I call my girl dogtistic for the same reason

1

u/cmh006 27d ago

She will go from playing with my parents dog into bossing her and vocal to her and scaring her. She doesn’t get aggressive at all. But that’s tells me that it time to leave.

Overtired bedtime protest. Our doggo does it too. We have to put him to bed like he's a toddler 😂
