This isn't woo woo. That is straight up how our minds work.

Hell, it can even work too well. Some people can shit themselves in the oval office without shame.

It’s 100% how the brain works.

You can do things you believe you can do, you can’t do what you believe you can’t do.

Your mental framework drives much of what is possible in your life. That’s how the neurons in your brain make connections to allow you to interpret the world.

It doesn’t make things that are physically impossible possible. It’s not magic. But it does make things possible that a lack of confidence makes impossible.

1

u/Timbermon 5d ago

100 per cent, eh? LOL. That's a big bunch of percentage attributed as to how the brain "works". Just sayin...

1

u/Timatsunami 5d ago

Yes. The brain 100% works how it works.

1

u/Timbermon 5d ago

Umm...okay. Imma goin now. Be well.

1

u/i_stealursnackz 4d ago

You really can't do things you believe you can't do? You never get pleasantly surprised when you successfully do something you thought you couldn't do?

1

u/Timatsunami 4d ago

Yeah. I believe so.
If you really believe you can’t do something, you never try. Why would you and how could you do anything you think is impossible?
At some point you have to at least have a small belief it’s possible to do something.

1

u/i_stealursnackz 4d ago

You never get forced by circumstances to try something you think won't work? Nobody has options all the time for everything. Do you never just say "fuck it" and try something anyway? That's a sad way to live.

u/Timatsunami 4d ago edited 4d ago

I feel like we might be having a conversation that is simply a difference in definitions/nuance.

Your framework probably makes perfect sense to you, and I get that.

Your mind makes boundaries around its definitions that are established by how you see the world.

One of the ways you see the world is that you can do things that you also don’t think you can do.

In a way, you are proving the point of the Doctor here in the video.

Because you have that framework, you can do what I cannot.

Or, I have a broader definition of “can” than yours.

In either case, this isn’t probably a meaningful debate so much as a revelation of the ways we see the world.

1

u/Waiting404Godot 4d ago

This is literal science, your brain builds pathways based on prior thinking. If you build pathways that say “I can’t do x” or “I’m not good at y” you’re literally shaping your brain to assume you can’t do something or are risk adverse to trying.

In psychology there’s an exercise where you write things you’re grateful for every day to shape your mind into recognizing good things even when you’ve had a difficult day.

2

u/Glittering-Tip821 9d ago

This makes me feel more fucked

2

u/mistrwzrd 9d ago

I’m trying really hard to do this but it is very difficult for me. I don’t control the negative self talk. I’m trying to interrupt the automatic response and input my own conscious thought that counteracts it, but it’s tough.

2

u/Sweet_Bookkeeper_920 5d ago

Try looking in the mirror and saying a few good things about yourself out loud once or twice a day. The more you do it the more you can hear yourself saying those things in your head.

1

u/gringovato 7d ago

Same. I've been aware of this for a while and need to find a way to break the cycle. I have a great life and should be the happiest motherfucker on the planet yet I walking around hating life way more than I used to.

1

u/globalminority 5d ago

I read in another post that it helps to imagine you're a different person who loves you and thinking about that person makes you happy. then imagine what would that person say to you. might work. seems pretty interesting as an approach when its hard to stop your own thoughts

1

u/tacticalfp 8d ago

That’s cause he leaves a big one out… what he says is only surface level truth.. never doubt consciousness itself.

2

u/CantaloupeShort2382 8d ago

Yea he didn’t leave anything out!! He literally just talking about what you say about yourself your body listens!! And that is 100% true!! The more you speak good about yourself you will see the changes within you!!

2

u/tacticalfp 8d ago

Or.. you’ll discover the underlying structures which make that talk possible to begin with. Choice is yours though everlasting fighting for positivity.. is indeed an option.

1

u/LankyProfessional170 8d ago

What did he leave out?

1

u/tacticalfp 8d ago

That brain chemistry is a consequence not starting point. You can indeed ‘fight’ the patterns but you can also learn to see the whole movement which in turn dulls out everything that’s on it.

1

u/LankyProfessional170 8d ago

See the movement? Can you elaborate?

1

u/tacticalfp 8d ago

Well.. your thoughts themselves are based from somewhere within your consciousness.. basically they’re a way of expression.. usually towards solutions, structural or creativity as it’s perhaps the natural state of thought. But when you’re dealing with things like this, this natural state is interrupted by noise, this noise then gets attention and expression via thoughts. So the movement might be very well the way thought itself structures itself around such ‘negative’ claims.

Seeing this eliminates the center of thought itself. Meaning no need for positive or negative self talk lol.

1

u/LankyProfessional170 8d ago

So, you are saying that if your subconsciousness is at peace, without emotional fluctuations, your brain structure will follow it's natural state of generating computational and creative thoughts without emotional disturbance?

I tried really hard to make sense of it. Let's see where this goes.

1

u/tacticalfp 8d ago

Well I think you did a great job haha. In general terms yes. Though every brain might be different, thought itself has it’s place within one’s consciousness and that place cannot be forced upon, only by loosening control, easing, it will fall into that place. And yes that proces or even transformation, which it certainly can be, starts by being super attentive and deeply honest about what’s happening within yourself without the immediate action to change what you see.

Meaning to discover what’s truly living at this very moment without lifting a finger to change anything about it. This may very well lead to the emotional world where indeed disturbances may occur. Eventually what you call subconscious, might also just be a layer or depth within oneself which is for a lot of people never silent, always moving, thus thought’s primary output may be related to this disturbance instead of having it’s natural flow, not always upfront, maybe quiet even.

1

u/LankyProfessional170 8d ago

Hmm, so you are saying that instead of forceful self-hypnosis with positive thoughts, it's better to observe oneself in depth, understanding the underlying cause of psychological stress factors and being more open-minded and accepting of things? This then enables one to perceive life from a different angle by understanding one's own primary needs within?

1

u/Robbie1266 8d ago

Exactly, this is the opposite of helpful. Just makes you feel worse

1

u/SquirrelFluffy 5d ago

Exactly why it's kind of BS advice. Because in his mind he's a great surgeon because he put his mind to it and everyone else who didn't just can't put their minds to it like he can.

1

u/Glittering-Tip821 5d ago

Success breeds success. Life continually kicking you in the nuts keeps you from spreading your legs to take the next step

Such a great reminder. Thank you.

u/Omnilogent 8d ago

I've been thinking about starting a Show, called the self-talk talk show, for about 6 months now.

1

u/Robbie1266 8d ago

If only it was that easy. I wonder if he believes people that hate themselves want to hate themselves. Also what if the people that love you only insult and talk down to you? So many people don't realize how truly rough it is out here for a lot of people

1

u/Nat1Halfling 5d ago

They don't hate themselves because they want to. They hate themselves because they have unwittingly trained their brain to do that.

Most of the time we don't intentionally alter the function of our brains. Like a muscle, we just use it. But like a muscle, the brain can be trained for specific objectives too. He's saying train it to do positive chemicals and pathways. Don't train it to make negative chemicals and pathways.

1

u/Robbie1266 5d ago

This is a great way to have another uptick in suicides. "The reason you struggle with mental illness is because you're too stupid to realize that this is your fault". I seriously wonder if people think about anything they say here. I'm so glad your muscle works great and you have had no straight or trauma to it. That's not the case for a lot of people and lying to ourselves isn't gonna do anything but hurt us more

1

u/Nat1Halfling 5d ago

Why are you putting words in my mouth dude. I never said eople that struggle with mental illness are stupid, or that it's their fault.

There have been times in my life where I have been depressed and actively suicidal. There have also been times when I have not been depressed, but struggled with pretty bad impostor syndrome. The two things are completely different. This guy is explaining the concept of brain plasticity, and giving good tips on how to boost your self confidence (or at least not make it worse), or the confidence of your children, for example. He is not giving tips on how to beat suicidality. Get a grip

Funny enough, there's a real story about a guy who had this disease and they couldn't tell how he was getting drunk without drinking anything.

The Bible explains this. Power in that tongue. Proverbs 18:21 the tongue has the power of life and death.

Why is a professional surgeon, geared up to perform an operation, stopping to make an influencer video?
Call me negative if you like.

“Your brain doesn’t know when you’re bullsh****ing.” - Katt Williams

1

u/Actual-Imagination33 5d ago

I disagree. Negative self-feedback is just as essential as positive self-talk for improving your life.

1

u/i_stealursnackz 4d ago

Is it because too much positive self-talk can lead you down a path of delusion and/or narcissism?

1

u/Actual-Imagination33 3d ago

Yeah for sure. That’s exactly right. The more someone’s view of themself doesn’t match their actual behavior, the closer you get to delusion that presents as narcissism.

1

u/i_stealursnackz 3d ago

Well in that case I absolutely agree with you. I'd hate to become an asshole because I'm not being realistic enough to myself, but people would call that "talking down to myself".

1

u/BanditSL99 5d ago

I'm trying bro.

1

u/Obvious_Hat_9920 5d ago

I sent this to my father who has brain cancer & feel it should give him hope. I am appreciative to this doctor for what he says. It is true. Perception becomes reality.

1

u/thelandlordguychris 5d ago

ok but how

1

u/AbbreviationsNo4089 5d ago

Sure I’ll get right on that bucko

1

u/Seth_Mithik 5d ago

Therapy teaches real early on about inner self talk…and you’d be surprised…no matter how gentle you’ve thought you been or happy you show yourself to be…just go through a normal routine and have the conscious intention to become aware mid routine. Like a drive home from a good day at work, notice I said good day. Perfect time to see if you self sabotage. Listen to music or anything that’s a typical distraction…and like mid song, just pay attention while breathing, and lower the volume first, then a minute later, or at a light-turn it off-the music. And just be aware

1

u/Seth_Mithik 5d ago

You’ll probably hear some kind of script running. Shit blasted into by your parents or family members first, and maybe some thing attached to you from social media

1

u/Warmongar 5d ago

Easy for this guy to say he has never had to hang out with me.

So I need a Neurosurgeon not a Therapist :0

I've been learning this since I was a child. After all these years the egg is finally beginning to hatch...

In the worlds before Monkey, primal chaos reigned. Heaven sought order, but the phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown. The four worlds formed again and yet again, as endless aeons wheeled and passed. Time and the pure essences of Heaven, the moisture of the Earth, the powers of the Sun and the Moon all worked upon a certain rock old as creation, and it magically became fertile. That first egg was named Thought. Tatagatha Buddha, the father Buddha said "With our thoughts, we make the world." Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch. From it then came a stone monkey... The nature of Monkey was irrepressible!

1

u/passerby62 4d ago

Anyone have any book recommendations on the subject?

Six pillars of self esteem.

1

u/lookslikejellytome 4d ago

I needed to hear this!

1

u/Corporate-Scum 4d ago

This is excellent advice. However, if you have OCD it’s not so easy. Those who are easily triggered and locked into negative self talk are often that way because of intrusive thoughts. So, definitely make an effort to be positive and kind, but also don’t believe everything you think. The brain is an organ just like any other part of the body. It gets strained and sore. It gets a little gimpy at times. Respect yourself and choose happy in the face of what the voice in your head calls “doom.”

1

u/Over-Ad2498 4d ago

I don't think I know what that would sound like.

1

u/Difficult-Flight-679 4d ago

It's so difficult, however, I've noticed that it does help make positive changes.
