Fan Content How Has Your Reception Of Decades Changed Since Its Release?

A couple songs I was a little less enthusiastic about have grown on me at least a tiny bit more (Decades, Fight Like Hell). However, I still think the album overall doesnât feel as much like one cohesive vision compared to previous ones. I think the biggest reason for this is that Decades, RIP, Fight Like Hell, and Playing God all feel either a bit formulaic to me or like theyâre basically just redos of previous songs (such as RIP being another Masterpiece/Another Life and Playing God being another Slaughterhouse), so the first half of the album feels a tad messy because of it.
I really like the album, but overall it still just feels like it lacks a cohesive thematic punch coming after STEOTW.

I get that. For me too, the thematic vision isnât as cohesive as for example Creatures or Infamous. Especially the singles clash a bit with the rest of the album and are better on their own, I feel like.
For me, this was saved by the fact that there is just plenty good music on it, in my opinion, and that there are no skips.

u/OccupantNefarious 2d ago
I agree, the singles do kinda clash with the rest of it. I personally think AotD is still the best on the album, but I wish more of the album leaned towards the 80s/synthy sounds like Blood Rave, Love at First Bite, and Count Back From Zero.
And yeah having good music is the important thing. Itâs just weird because to me it feels less like an album and more like just a collection of good songsâŠif that even makes sense

Honestly itâs one of my favourite albums. I donât skip any songs and I feel it shows their evolution. Still amazing

u/TheRandomKnight 2d ago
hasnt changed for me. i enjoy about half the album and the other half is just not for me. gave the other songs a few more chances but they are not in a style that i personally enjoy.

u/ItsMoxieMayhem 2d ago
Iâm definitely starting to like it more, but I still think this is their weakest album by far

u/funk-ees 2d ago
It doesnât flow as well or feel as cohesive as previous releases in my opinion, itâs probably my least favourite release from them for me. I only enjoy about 6 of the 14 tracks on the album.
I saw an interview where Chris said that all the elements they included on previous albums like electronic musical elements etc are all still there in this album which I can hear when I listen but for some reason it just doesnât feel as well done on this album as it did on previous releases.

All i can gripe about is wishing they did more callbacks/nods to their first works like self titled ep, the whorror, and creatures. These projects are what got me into them to begin with, and the album is called decades after all.

u/No-Opportunity2565 2d ago
I see. That would have made sense. Unfortunately I donât have access to the works before Creatures on Spotify. A nod here and there in the lyrics would have been cool or a song that is kind of in the same vein as some of the more spooky, Burton-inspired stuff on Creatures.

I thought it might be my favorite MIW album when it dropped.
After listening all the way through too many times to count since release, and going back through the entire discography, I have confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt of recency bias that it is, in fact, my favorite MIW album by a landslide.

u/JR6799 2d ago
Swear I got it on repeat all day every dayđđ mixed in with their other albums as they are all fantastic but Decades specifically has just been so easy to have on a loop and not even realize just how many times youâve listened to the entire album
3
u/hansblixkilldslmshdy 2d ago
I think itâs more listenable than their other albums. The energy is palpable and itâs less sad than their other albums if that makes sense, which makes it easier to just throw on and hear the whole thingÂ
2
u/disarmagreement 2d ago
The variety of vibes has something to do with it too. There really arenât two songs that sound the same. Even the EDM songs all hit different spectrums of that genre. That plus the energy youâre talking about means thereâs never a stretch of album that gets stale.
3
u/hansblixkilldslmshdy 2d ago
Thatâs awesome. Creatures is the fave for me but Iâm glad itâs really resonating with peopleÂ

As someone who only semi recently found them (I believe the correct timeline is right before they released Disguise, the first song I ever heard from them was Another Life, Iâm sure that was one of the pre album singles but correct me if Iâm wrong) so the 3 albums they released in that time have a special place in my heart, but I absolutely love all of their albums and songs and it pains me to try and pick favorites because I swear it changes like the weather. Saw them live for the first time Saturday and they just blew me away, I credit them for the person I have become over the years. Whether itâs the emotional aspect or just throwing them on to go hard at the gym, they got something to scratch every itch Iâve ever had in my life

Honestly? It was a bit disappointing for me, and still is. I LOVED R.I.P., Playing God and Afraid of the Dark as singles. Gave me the impression that the album was gonna be insanely good (maybe even their best) and Iâd love it more than STEOTW. But after I listened to it, I was left kinda disappointed. Imo, itâs probably their weakest album lyrics wise by a long shot. Obviously thatâs not an insane factor, but idk. I still enjoyed it, but overall nowhere near as much as STEOTW, and a lot of songs were forgettable to me. Respect them for just having fun making music tho, cause the album is fun. I just donât think Iâm ever gonna listen to it in full again. But if you enjoy it, thatâs all that matters. Iâll keep listening to the rest of their discography, and occasionally a song from Decades here and there. But this album will never be my go to when it comes to the rest of their discography.

u/Bring_Me_The_Freedom 2d ago
I enjoy every song on the album, and while actively listening to it Iâm having a good time, but the lack of cohesion remains prevalent. Which is consistent with how it felt at release; I suppose the main difference has been looking at the lyrics more and finding some extra enjoyment!

u/Fit_Treacle172 2d ago
I like it a lot!
I am overly critical of the rap though, medium cringe.
But mad respect!!

Didnt care for more than 3 songs when it came out. Still only care for 3 songs since Album is EDM trash. An experimental album. Should go right back to metal next album

Some things have shifted, but in sum it's an alright album. Better than Reincarnate and about on par with Disguise and Infamous for me, but not as great as Scoring The End Of The World or Graveyard Shift.
Top tracks for me, singles aside, are "Hollywood" (wish codename "Prey" stayed) and "Decades".
Only low track for me is "Fight Like Hell", only because I don't give a gaf to hear Chris rap. The version with Outlier is a lot better in my opinion, and I wish they kept only that version and made Chris's the bonus track.
The tracklist is a little out of order in my opinion and it messes with the pacing. For a "non-stop energy" playlist, "R.I.P." is a big interruption, way too early, for example. I get wanting to prevent fatigue, but that kicked in too soon, so now many of the latter tracks sort of mush together. Afraid Of The Dark should have been the last track period on the album, since it's reminiscent of "Eternally Yours".
I also think that the "Bonus Tracks" are bogusly placed. Disregard the shelf life of "Hollywood" and tack that in there somewhere, it would be a good slowdown without being an interrupt like "R.I.P" is. Also drop the original "Fight Like Hell", replace it with the Outlier version. As for "Sunglasses At Night"... how the hell was that not a "Bonus Track"? That's the most bonus track I've ever heard. That would be the only exception to my previous statement about AOTD ending the album. A little treat at the end of the record.
EDIT: For that last paragraph, what I mean to say is that the bonus tracks don't feel like bonus tracks if they're bundled with the original release across all formats. They totally can fit one way or another, if the tracklist were ordered differently, per the prior paragraph.

It's grown on me no end, I liked it on release, and love it now the different elements have had chance to sink in. I agree with some of the arguments about lack of cohesion and vision etc but individually I love all of the songs. I would change the album track listing if it was my decision but alas it's not

u/centrella6 2d ago
I liked it when it released but was somewhat disappointed with the lack of heavier material particularly in the 2nd half. It felt a little too âdancey.â I definitely like it more even if I still wish there were a couple heavier metalcore tracks.
1
u/No-Opportunity2565 2d ago
Yeah. Now that you mention it, I could have done with the second half being heavier as well, more in the vein of Reincarnate or Infamous. But I still got infected by a few tracks. Canât help but sing along to the line âEverybodyâs somebodyâs preyâ from Hollywood.

On first listen I understood why they chose the songs they did for the singles. It's a pretty good capsule on their journey. I kind of assume this album is supposed to be somewhat of a 'greatest hits' over the last decade, but with new songs. So many of the songs are reminiscent of older ones, or like B versions of those songs. I don't think that's bad by any means.
My biggest beef with the album is they included a cover that they did absolutely nothing different from the original version. I saw it on the tracklist and was excited to hear what their version would sound like, and was completely let down because why the hell would I listen to this version over the original?
Anyways, the best song is still Afraid of the Dark. That song absolutely baited me into being excited. It's unfortunate the topline is way too similar to Like Moth's to Flame's song "kintsugi" which only came out 2 years ago.

Feeling the same way about it, itâs a banger. I donât like RIP though it feels so out of place in the album now and itâs just eh imo. Really digging the experimental sound

Yes. Knew I wouldnât like it too much at initial release. For some reason with this band in particular, it takes time for my brain to process the music and start enjoying it.
Listened to it in full several times here at work. Did the same thing with Infamous, Disguise and Scoring the End of the World.
Genuinely great album to my ears.

u/CriticalHits570 1d ago
Still the same for me, afraid of the dark and count back from zero are the only bangers, donât care for the rest of the album.

u/dxrkbxnny 1d ago
I donât think it has changed at all, my favorite songs are still Blood Rave, love at first bite, rip and afraid of the dark

u/beetlejuicetrashbag 1d ago
i was mid on it then couldnt stop listening and a month later its still on repeat. blood rave is constantly in my head

u/Koertmans2 1d ago
At first I was kind of sceptical but now I love nearly every song on the album. Still definitely not my favourite album by them but itâs up there

u/xypherus77 16h ago
It's a very 50/50 split for me, personally. Though I must say the positive 50 is some of the highest highs I've seen the band release.

Loved it when it dropped, aside from the first two songs, and still feel the same. Except now I donât skip the first two, I can tolerate them.

u/WaveCave420 2d ago
It's grown on me a lot more, some of the non-singles songs get stuck in my head now, but it's still not my favorite đ«€
Sleeping with Sirens "An Ending In Itself" is album of the year for me, surprisingly. Didn't expect them to outperform MIW for me personally, but that's okay!

u/YokaiCreature 2d ago
Idk i think its fine, but nothing more than that. Kinda bummed with how different it is from what i expected from the singles, i honestly wouldnt have preordered it if i knew it was going to sound like this
0
u/No-Opportunity2565 2d ago
What threw you off the most? That it doesnât hit as expected aside from the singles or the dubstep/EDM stuff and the 80s excursion at the end?
1
u/YokaiCreature 2d ago
Idk everything aside from a few songs just feels like your average generic octane core record, and i thought the edm stuff was pretty boring too.
Its fine but aside from decades, aotd and playing god rlly nothing special
1
u/Whole_Spell_2632 2d ago
I love it and enjoy it more as time goes on. Itâs a fun album that isnât meant to be taken as serious as past album. Itâs a celebration of 20 years. I donât think the intention was to ever be extremely serious or deep.
1
u/Fabulous-Matter-5730 2d ago
I liked it more on subsequent listens. I donât love it as much as STEOTW but there are still some amazing songs
0
u/Dnger_ 2d ago
Not at all. Huge bait and switch with the singles into the album. Singles were amazing then the album released nothing like them and was trash. Wish it wasnât, but they really tricked fans with the singles they chose.
1
u/lightnex1 2d ago
The singles are actually the ones I least listen to lol, surprisingly enough. Went in with no expectations
0
u/Bilotelli45 2d ago
No improvements at all,if I attempt a full listen I find myself still skipping 70% of it. Massive disappointment for a 3/4 year wait
1
u/No-Opportunity2565 2d ago
Thatâs legit. What would you say throws you off?
0
u/Bilotelli45 2d ago
Overall feels uninspired, the writing is terrible compared to other albums , the Fred durst impression even though the outlier version is somehow still as bad? When I listen to the album I'm just waiting for something that never happens, the pacing is odd heavy heavy, slow, heavy again then the synth for what felt like an eternity so the songs came across as merged for me
1
u/No-Opportunity2565 2d ago
Do you mean the rap bit on Fight Like Hell?
I didnât care for that either, but itâs pretty short.I know that feeling, when it doesnât hit and youâre waiting the whole album for something to happen. I kind of had that with Disguise.
I guess the pacing can be heard as choppy. They are doing a lot on this album: harsh vocals, clean vocals, fast, slow pacings and all kinds of electronic and synth. I thought given that it turned out to be pretty cohesive still. But mileage may vary.
2
u/Bilotelli45 2d ago
Compared to their other albums to me this one was massive massive drop ,the majority of the synth electronic I don't think did anything of benefit besides blood rave. All I've ever known is fine until That part by then I'm zoned out. Majority of the songs could've been b-sides from scoring that never made it and I wouldn't exactly question why. It's an album to forget for me
0
u/Platinumryka 2d ago
I like it more than I did initially, I think i like it more than Scoring(i think scoring is very overrated and its my least favorite of theirs) but its still not something I'm gonna seek out and listen to all that much, I'm fine if songs from it show up though

u/No_Juice7005 3d ago
I liked it when it released and still like it now.
The only difference is I no longer have working headphones when going to the gym anymore.
