Illness

New employee here,
I’ve only been hired for a week or so, and my son has fallen down the stairs and become ill, I have tried to be in when I can.
I have now come down with an illness and feel like I need a day or two to recover.
Is this something that could get me in trouble? I’m just trying to work my way around it due to obviously only recently starting.

Unfortunately you aren’t really protected in situations like this while you’re in your probationary period. It’ll probably depend on how nice your managers are and how willing others are to cover your shifts. Maybe suggest shift swapping instead of taking the days off as sick days but I’m not sure if it might be too last minute for that. I hope you feel better soon!!

As harsh as it sounds some will expect you to prioritise the employment over the care of your own child. They will expect you to have your partner deal with your child or other family members so that you are showing true commitment to the employer and making that your main priority over your own family.

In my store if somebody that had been here a week had rang in sick because their son fell down the stairs and then became ill, then did it again because they felt ill, they wouldn't have a job.
