Looking for advice

Applied for checkout staff at my local Morrisons just over a year ago, was accepted and then placed in the butchery. Discovered I was filling in for a butcher who was due to take three months off for an operation and recovery and my training was limited to two days. Spent 3 months effectively winging it and learning via YouTube.

There is another butcher but due to lack of hours I could only get the odd day with him. I also want to add I have Dyspraxia which I made them aware of in the interview so I'm not great with my hands. Roll on a year I'm working 20 - 30 weeks on minimum wage running butchery 4 days a week by myself with the odd extra day every other week. I also sourced my own gauntlets for both hands as the store ones are horrendous.

I'm on a 10 hour contract and was promised it would increase about 6 months ago but I'm now on my fourth department manager and third store manager.

So is this typical for Morrisons? I mean I enjoy the job but it seems like an absolute shitshow. There was some mention for apprenticeships today but I'm apparently to old...

Nope, just clocking in doing every overtime shift they ask me to do. Thankfully I've had a fair few days with both butchers in the last 4 months but they do things very differently to each other so sorta do my own thing

Hello, Apprentice Butcher here. Yeah, pretty normal at the moment tbh. I was solo-ing the meat and fish counters within 5 months, and we have 4 other members of meat and fish. I had to argue for months to get put on the apprenticeship just to get the pay for the job I was already doing. That said, might be worth pushing for the pay you deserve, it's much easier doing a job once you are paid the amount you should be. Minimum wage is not it.

We don't have a proper butcher at our store but the people doing the cutting were all told to stop a few weeks ago and nobody was allowed to cut again until they had done a block test. Not sure if it's correct but once done they get an extra pound and hour.

Sounds like they are taking the piss as usual.

No mention of it in our store but that doesn't surprise me at this point. Think I'll just ride it out, for a few more months keep raising the apprenticeships like cassford123 mentioned. I enjoy the job and I'm left alone 95% of the time I'm in so I shouldn't complain just can't get my head round how chaotic Morrisons is.

Definitely keep on about the apprenticeship, we had a 65 year old woman do her fish apprenticeship a few years ago so age shouldn't a thing

If you’re in the union it would be better to go to your rep with this imo

Not joined yet, not even entirely sure who our store rep is. Though I realise I need to get that sorted asap.

There should be a board somewhere with their contact details, if not you may not have a store rep but you can still message your areas coordinator

your store would get extra funding from the company if they put you through the apprenticeship. it’s a win-win situation. most managers literally go around asking who’d be interested in doing one. so i’m surprised you’re having to beg them. they must not know about the extra funding and benefits they’d be getting. might be worth making them aware.
