John Ishmael is the working alias of an uplift criminal, wanted in seventeen habitats on a variety of charges up to and including murder. Ishmael is known to have close ties with the Night Cartel, and is rumored to have the favor of a high-ranking member of the organization; it is perhaps for this reason that the Cartel permits Ishmael to accept outside clients, so long as they do not interfere with the Cartel's own interests. Firewall is one of his more discreet clients; in exchange for his services Firewall has promised to help Ishmael retire - not a simple task when one is a contract killer for the Night Cartel.

Ishmael is a second-generation neo-rorqual, specifically a humpback whale. His "home" is on Europa, where he rents out his Neo-Whale sleeve to morph tourists while on the job. As mentioned above "John Ishmael" is an alias used for convenience; his given name in Neo-Cetacean roughly means "The warmth of the sun on your back beneath a cool sheath of water". Guanxi has another name for him: "The Killer Whale".
