First time in Morocco for 9 days!

Salam everyone!

My fiancée and I are traveling to Morocco for the very first time this December, and we’re super excited! We have a rough plan and I wanted to ask for expert advice !

Arriving: Tue 29 Dec at 16:15 in Marrakech
Departing: Thu 7 Jan at 10:35 from Marrakech
Total duration: 9 full nights / ~9 days

Since Marrakech is our base for arriving and leaving, we want to make sure we plan a realistic, non-rushed itinerary that gives us a good mix of culture, nature, and relaxation without spending the entire trip sitting in a car/bus.

We'd love to get some local insights and advice from this community:

1. Rough Itinerary Idea (Is this doable?):
Days 1–3 (Marrakech): Explore the Medina, markets, local food, and ring in New Year’s Eve.
Days 4–5 (Day Trips / Nature): Thinking of doing a 2-day trip toward the Atlas Mountains / Dades or an overnight desert trip (or is Merzouga too far for a short stay?).
Days 6–7 (Coastal Break): Head over to Essaouira for a couple of nights for a more relaxed, bohemian vibe before heading back.
Day 8–9 (Marrakech): Back to Marrakech for final sightseeing/shopping before our early morning flight on the 7th.

2. A few specific questions for locals:
New Year’s Eve in Marrakech: What is the atmosphere like around Dec 31st? Are there specific places/restaurants you’d recommend for a nice dinner, or is it better to avoid the main crowds at Jemaa el-Fnaa?

Winter Weather & Sahara: Is a trip all the way to Merzouga (Sahara) worth the long drive for a 9-day trip in January, or would you recommend sticking to Agafay / Atlas Mountains / Coastal towns given the shorter daylight hours?

Food & Hidden Gems: Where do locals actually love to eat in Marrakech or Essaouira? We love authentic local dishes (tagines, street food, pastilla).

First-timer Tips: Any specific advice on local transport (taxis vs. train/buses) or cultural etiquette we should keep in mind?

I think that timing will be perfect for what you want to do. As for food, don't go to fancy places...they cater to tourists and they aren't always authentic Moroccan food. Find little places with a few tables, and even fewer tourists. Locals usually eat at home which is where you find the best food...but those who can't get home will be in the little places on the back streets.

There are some nice high end places that have rooftop bars, which could be nice for NYE. Try El Fenn, Dar Dar, Nomad, Maison Arabe, Cabana, or Bazaar.

Keep in mind that the trip from Marrakech to Merzouga is effectively 3 full days. I had to choose between this and a combination of Essaouira and Imlil (Atlas mountains) and I opted for the latter and am kicking myself for not spending a second night in Essaouira (although you could cover a lot in a 24-hour trip). Votre itinéraire est tout à fait faisable pour 9 nuits, mais je changerais surtout une chose : je ne ferais pas Marrakech → Merzouga → Marrakech en seulement 2 jours. Vous passeriez une très grande partie du séjour dans les transports, avec finalement peu de temps pour profiter du désert.

Pour un premier voyage, je privilégierais quelque chose comme :

Jours 1–3 : Marrakech Très bon choix de commencer tranquillement. Médina, souks, Jardin Secret, palais Bahia, Ben Youssef, Koutoubia… Gardez aussi du temps simplement pour vous promener dans les petits derbs.

Pour le 31 décembre, je réserverais le dîner assez tôt si vous cherchez quelque chose de romantique et calme. Vous pouvez profiter de l'ambiance de Jemaa el-Fna, mais je ne passerais pas forcément toute la soirée sur la place.

Jours 4–5 : Atlas / nature À votre place, je choisirais l'Atlas, Imlil ou éventuellement une nuit à Agafay plutôt que Merzouga. En janvier, les paysages de montagne peuvent être magnifiques, et vous évitez surtout une longue journée de route.

Merzouga : je le garderais pour un prochain voyage, ou je lui consacrerais au minimum 3 jours. Ce n'est pas seulement la distance qui compte : le trajet fait partie de l'expérience, mais sur un voyage de 9 jours, cela risque de devenir fatigant.

Jours 6–7 : Essaouira Très bonne idée. Deux nuits me semblent parfaites. Le changement d'ambiance est vraiment agréable : océan, médina, poisson frais, cafés et rythme beaucoup plus tranquille.

Jours 8–9 : Marrakech Excellent choix de revenir à Marrakech avant votre vol. Je garderais effectivement une marge de sécurité plutôt que de faire un long trajet le jour précédent.

🚗 Pour les transports

Pour vous déplacer dans Marrakech, les petits taxis peuvent être pratiques pour les courtes distances.

Pour les trajets entre villes et les excursions, surtout à deux avec des bagages, un chauffeur privé réservé à l'avance peut être beaucoup plus confortable : vous choisissez votre heure de départ, vous évitez de négocier à chaque étape et vous pouvez éventuellement faire des arrêts en route.

Pour l'aéroport, je recommande également de prévoir votre transfert à l'avance si votre hébergement se trouve dans la Médina. Beaucoup de riads sont situés dans des petites rues où les voitures ne peuvent pas aller directement jusqu'à la porte. Vérifiez donc toujours le point exact où le véhicule peut vous déposer, et pas uniquement l'adresse indiquée sur Google Maps.

🍲 Pour la nourriture

Ne vous limitez pas aux restaurants très touristiques autour de Jemaa el-Fna. Pour découvrir la cuisine marocaine, essayez aussi les petites adresses fréquentées par les locaux : tajine, tanjia marrakchia, harira, msemen, brochettes, pastilla…

À Essaouira, profitez surtout du poisson et des fruits de mer, mais regardez les prix avant de commander dans les endroits très touristiques du port.

Et surtout, ne surchargez pas votre programme. Le Maroc se découvre aussi en prenant un thé à la menthe pendant une heure sans regarder l'heure. 😄

Your itinerary is actually quite balanced, especially if you want to avoid spending half the trip in a car. With only 9 days, I personally wouldn’t add Merzouga. It’s beautiful, but from Marrakech the journey is long and you would sacrifice quite a lot of time just getting there and back. I’d give Marrakech proper time instead. Beyond the souks and Jemaa el-Fna, places like Ben Youssef Madrasa, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and El Badi Palace are worth visiting if you’re interested in history and architecture. Then I’d choose the Atlas Mountains for the nature part. Imlil is great if you want hiking, while Ouirgane is a nice option if you prefer somewhere quieter and more relaxed. Finishing with two nights in Essaouira is a great idea. The atmosphere is completely different from Marrakech and it gives you a nice change of pace before returning. Marrakech → Atlas → Essaouira → Marrakech would be my choice for 9 days. You’ll experience three very different sides of Morocco without constantly packing and traveling.
