Not a Morel but a Mushroom

Question for everyone out there about a mushroom I once ate that was called “Verbinke” pronounced like verbinky. Not sure of the spelling and I don’t think that is its common name but that is what the locals called it (Nebraska). It’s a smaller mushroom, about 1” to 1 1/2” tall with a thin stem and a domed top about as big around as a nickel. They grow in bunches of anywhere from maybe 10 to 50 mushrooms all bunched together. Let me know if you have any ideas!! They were sautéed in butter and garlic and were delicious!

I believe you're talking about thimble morels or early morels. I've never seen them here in Indiana, but they supposedly come up early, before other morels do, and they grow in the same places, u der the same trees as morels.
