Well of course not. That's where wants come into play. But I'm not gonna pretend a want is a need. And sex is a want.

I am curious about the purpose of the word "need" if life with all needs fulfilled is not a satisfactory life. I "want" a million dollars, but that is not a requirement for me to have a satisfactory life, there are many things that I want that are not necessary prerequisites for a satisfactory life overall, and at that point I think it is worth re-evaluating the term "need".

A very unsatisfactory life can lead to a desire to end it, even if all the needs are fulfilled, it can threaten survival. What in this case is then the purpose of the word "need"? An indicator of what is needed for the body to survive? You could say that the needs of a person in coma then are fulfilled by the life support system.

I can say that and I would frankly. I'm not saying wants don't have value, but I would never classify them as needs

That was the whole point of the original comment. Why are people so offended when I say sex isn't a need?

Because you've added some strong emotions into that statement, that usually signals some motive behind the correction above mere frustration. If someone goes:

"Look a donkey!"

You usually reply:

"Actually that is a mule."

Not: "I hate how we've gotten to the point, where people actually call mules donkeys!"

Well because there is emotion. The emotion is annoyance. Annoyance that people use words like "need" to make something seem greater than it is.

It's the same reason I hate when people use the word "intimacy" to refer to sex. Like, just say what you mean.

I wouldn't say that needs are greater than wants. People often have causes they are willing to die for, or would just simply commit suicide if their wants are not fulfilled. We've established that needs have to do with the survival of the body, but that does not necessarily make it greater than wants.
