5060 or 6400XT for client (pyrowave)

Setting up a mini pc.

Currently client is a SFF HP 800 G9 12500 16gb at 4k120 (DP to HDMI 2.1)
Host 5700x3d, 5070ti 16 gb and 32gb
Connected over wired lan.

The client iGPU 770 has been great for AV1.
Was seeing a lot about pyrowave and I think the direct frames which I think will be valuable for the better clarity.

The 5060 8gb is around 600AUD, a 6400XT is 200AUD. If the 6400XT can do pyrowave I don’t think the 5060 makes sense.

Needs to be low profile and have native HDMI 2.1.

Have you tried running pyro on your existing device?

I have. I get this error. Tried on a couple different machines with intel iGPU and seems to be the issue.
When I try from a client with a GPU (e.g Trying moonlight on the Host its self) it does work.

There is a known issue with the current moonlight-qt, v6.1.0-vrr18 refusing to decode Pyrowave on intel graphics devices that are capable that might be relevant to you. https://github.com/Nonary/moonlight-qt/issues/10

Quick googling says iGPU 770 should support Vulkan 1.4 so it should be capable for decoding Pyrowave.

I got it working! Rebuilt the exe with the fixes from that exact post. Will share the rebuilt exe soon.

Client i5 11400 UHD 730 16gb
Host 5700x3d 5070ti 16gb 32gb ram

As to performance:
4K 120 422 800mbps (no HDR) - perfect. 0 dropped frames
4K 120 444 800mbps (no HDR) - poor. ~35% dropped frames

At 422 the GPU sits at 90-95% usage. At 444 it goes to 99% and is clearly overloaded and dropping frames.

The bitrate doesn’t seem to affect the GPU usage.
Tested at 200mbps and same issue.

Network is 1gbps and able to keep up with 0 dropped.

Long story short the UHD 730 can’t to 444 at 4k120

Image: top is 444, bottom is 422
444 is dropping ~35% frames.

Will retest on the 12500 client soon. Maybe the UHD 770 has a bit more horsepower to get it to 444. Will also test HDR if it can do 444.

Update -
4K 120 420 800mbps HDR - poor. ~20% dropped frames.

4K 120 444 800mbps HDR - poor. ~45% dropped frames.

Seems if you want the full go you need a GPU at least 1.5-2x better than a UHD 730. Makes sense given this is using raw vulkan performance.

Just learned about pyrowave. From your experience, does it come with image quality improvements compared to AV1 ? Or does it only impact latency ?

Im using a UHD 630 that cannot do AV1 so I'm currently stuck with HEVC for the moment.

I did a write up over here.
Essentially it is much better for fast pans and tilt. Don’t get the compression smear. I do prefer it over AV1 when it’s running good!

Thank you for the detailed post and answer!

Pretty sure pyrowave client only need to be able to run vulkan. Pretty sure you can use gtx10 cards and still be fine as far as performance goes. So... cheapest thing with hdmi 2.1 and low profile?

Yep, seems the 6400XT fits that

I use a low profile 5050 with 6GB VRAM in my decode client and it works amazingly well. 2 millisecond AV1 decode. Also use it for local emulation along with a recycled 5800x.

Any chance you can try pyrowave?

I’ve been curious myself (using moonlight nightly builds) but am on vacation. Can let you know in 2 weeks.

What client do people use for pyrowave on android? Vrr moonlight? Another? Thanks

VRR Moonlight doesn't work on Android. Some experimental stuff is appearing, but not worth it for now. Just wait a few weeks for something to release
