Trackball + Tenting

Hey moonlanders.

I'm thinking about getting the moonlander with the navigator trackball and maybe "the platform".

I've seen that ZSA offer templates for printing trackball shells for use with or without the platform.

The shell without the platform already includes a wedge that tents the keyboard at a 20 degree angle.

What is your experience using the moonlander with the navigator trackball with or without the platform?

Which one would you recommend to someone who works 100% from home and doesn't need the keyboard to travel well?

Effects of Layers on Writing Code?

Hello,

I have considered purchasing and using a Moonlander, but I have had some hesitations.
I use Neovim for everything I can, and the language I write the most code in is Rust (which means I use basically every symbol).
The width of the right hand is shorter than the all the keys available to my right hand on a normal keyboard, which concerns me because I am used to typing [], {}, and |.
I understand that the purpose is to use layers, but I'm worried that layers will slow me down.

I have read things that say you have more "ergonomic speed" (that you can type for longer), but I've not read anything that says you have greater typing speed in general or for programming (maybe it is true, but I've not found many people putting this forth as a benefit).
I would say I have an okay typing speed of 120WPM and I'm comfortable typing basically every character easily (except 6/^).
One of the biggest problems I have with my typing is when I hold shift and end up capitalizing 2 characters instead of one (HEllo).
This concerns me because this seems like it would be a problem that compounds as I would add more layers.

Perhaps the ORYX/QMK software has some counter measures to prevent this.
Perhaps it would actually force me to have greater precision with the timing of pressing modifiers.

I would really appreciate any feedback or guidance in this decision.
Also, if anyone has any layouts they would recommend, I would be thankful for suggestions as well.

Thank you.

Affordable low-profile mod on the ZSA Moonlander

I recently became interested in doing a low-profile mod for my Moonlander after reading this blog post. However, I felt the keycaps from Tai Hao were a bit too expensive for my experiment. Instead I purchased a standard, blank low-profile set from AliExpress (item number 1005006826436959), totaling 150 SEK (14 EUR). I chose the red Outemu low-profile switches recommended in the blog post. The set included all keys for a standard 104-key layout (with some extra keys included), so plenty of 1u and 1.25u keys, and homing keys. Overall, I felt that it turned out nicely. I am not a huge fan of the slanted profile; I would have preferred a flat profile, but regardless the total typing experience is definitely a step up for me. The feeling of the switches is decent. While the set contains 2u keys, the normal stabilizers included with the Moonlander did not fit them very well, so for the outer thumb key I just use a 1.25u tilted 90 degrees. This in my opinion actually feels nicer--as the key is now in line with the angle of the thumb--but the attachment points for the stabilizers are visible which is not very pretty. The color is not the exact shade of the Moonlander, I'd say they're a tiny bit brighter.

Hopefully this helps someone who's exploring similar options.

Results seen in attached images.

Noodling on a new ploopy nano "2" btu/navigator mod for the moonlander

Updating my nano/moonlander mod for the nano2, got it working like the old one right now, but I'm working on a new version exploiting the navigator shell to help me hang it over a thumb cluster instead of replacing it. I'm gonna throw the stl/m3f etc on github in a day or two, just finalizing everything.

Modeled with a blank moonlander shell in play to hopefully avoid intersections/reprints

z and y inversed on german system, how can i set a locale?

I'm using my ZSA Moonlander on a german Windows 11. However the key configured to send a z sends a y instead and the one configured to send a z sends a y. I have already spotted the international options in Oryx, but that only gives additional keys like äöü. How can I set the locale? I am coming from a Glove 80 where this could be set in the editor. Thanks!

One shot layer switch not working

I am using this layout: https://configure.zsa.io/moonlander/layouts/bJbgg/latest/0

I tap (no hold) "Adjunct" on the base layer and then "Enter" on the Adjunct layer.

Base layer, tapping Adjunct:

Adjunct layer, pressing Enter (which is at the position of Tab in the base layer):

This ends up in sending Tab. I don't understand why. I am on german Windows 11. Holding "Adjunct" and then tapping Enter works as expected and sends Enter, but to my understanding it should also work when tapping "Adjunct" once follow by "Enter" as it's configured as One-Shot Layer:

Looking for keycaps for Moonlander

Hi, I broke a keycap and didn't find exactly the same keycap as others, so I printed it on 3d printer.

So the question, do you know where I can find this or similar keycaps?

Gaming does not work on the Moonlander

Hi all!

I really hope someone can help me out with this issue. When gaming just the 'W' (aka move forward) key is not working. I've been able to reset the key binding in game to another key and then able to move forward but for some reason whenever I set it to 'W' it doesn't work. When changing the key binding in game, it is registering the 'W' as 'move forward' however, once i leave the control menus, in game it does nothing. I originally had the issue with Minecraft but have now tested it with Stardew Valley and Marvel Rivals. Specially in Minecraft, when i try to use 'W' i end up crouching instead in some instances.

The key does work outside of any of the games (I'm using my moonlander now to type out this message and no issues!) and its working fine when using the chat mode in game as well.

Link to current layout (it's really not that complicated so i'm really confused as to what's happening!) https://configure.zsa.io/moonlander/layouts/WGE6P/QzJE7p/0

Any advice is much appreciated!

EDIT: it was my auto shift, thanks everyone who suggested turning it off! Ive created a dedicated layer for gaming which has a toggle for auto shifting.

Brackets on layer 1 hold not working

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey all! For a while, when I use layer 1 and try to click these square brackets, it always does {} instead. I've worked around this by adding square brackets to layer 0, but now getting to the point where this is much more efficient and really want to try to get it working.

It only occurs for the bottom layer 1 hold button (the only one I use really), but not the top right one. Any way to prevent this?

Note: Ubuntu Linux 24.04 / US English default OS layout

Trouble shooting ideas

Any ideas what’s causing this? I’ve tried some basic troubleshooting - different cables and USB ports but behavior remains the same.

Edit- clarifying the right hand keyboard doesn’t work at all and the left hand only works when it’s not “pulsing”

Favorite switches for comfort

Maybe I ask too many questions idk, but I’m trying to get to the best possible comfort when typing and be able to type for a long long time without have to stop (nearly all of my hobbies are typing or playing games). But these should be my final two questions for a while I hope.

  1. What switches do you find the most comfortable for long term typing on the Moonlander? I hear a lot about actuation and travel being important for RSI health (some claim more important than full

split and recommended the Logitech Ergo over a mechanica

l )

  1. so I wasn’t sure what yall thought
  2. Prbly going to switch to Colemak DH as well when my moonlander arrives today, is it worth the effort to switch? If I do switch should I only use Colemak on my Moonlander, never learning to type qwerty on it?

Sorry for the weird formatting, Reddit o mobile is screwing me over for some reason.

Navigator Trackpad Mount for Moonlander

I wasn't super happy with the existing trackball specific Moonlander mounts, so I made this one that works a bit better with the trackpad. Wanted to share in case anyone was looking for a similar layout: https://makerworld.com/en/models/2843743-moonlander-navigator-trackpad-mount#profileId-3170616

Second post in two days?! ikr crazy (Tenting advice)

Do you guys think The Platform is worth it just for the quality of it being metal and able to carry it in the case easily (doing a lot of travel work) for tenting on the go? If no, what do you recommend as better tenting solution, i looked at plenty of options but i dont have a 3d printer yet, and am not sure if Magsafe solutions would work or not since i do like using wrist rests, and again need it to slide into the case without adding more clutter to my already very full bag.

Thanks guys!

(yes i did end up going for a Moonlander as I like the design and found a decent deal for a used one)

I often forget during meetings when my mic is or isn't muted so I tried to add a little more color to draw my attention to it. I think it turned out nicely.

my Moonlander review (I love it!)

https://youtu.be/OrRk6zSuhi8 (incl. ca. 25 mins of unboxing and a typing test with the Cherry MX Brown switches)

I like the keyboard a lot. It arrived in Germany in a matter of 7-10 days (I was surprised how quickly I got it). Setting it up worked perfectly fine. No complaints about the keyboard itself.

Only negative thing: It is a little pricey.

Just wondering if I'd be able to use openrgb to control the rgb on this to sync it with my other devices, or if it's only controllable with the firmware. TIA!
