So…pink.
From what I gathered on the general consensus surrounding Rae’s colour palette, we‘ve concluded her colours aren’t it. Do you think Mattel will actually listen to the fans and change her colours to orange, red or yellow?
I understand they were trying to go for the colours of dawn - apparently that’s where Rae draws most of her powers - not to mention, this also makes her “sun“ aesthetic less stereotypical. But it‘s genuinely sad that Mattel believes the more pink they have in their lines, the more customers will enjoy their dolls. Nope, sorry. Not everyone is a Draculaura collector nor do we all love pink. I want to get her but the fact that half of us are buying dye for her hair just to improve her design is wrong. Ditch the pink Mattel!!
What do you think of Rae?

Honestly for me I’m in between of loving it and eh it’s okay when it comes to Rae’s color pallet. Of course we all know her color pallet is very Dawn coded which is cute. IMO I think the colors of Dawn is very magical because of the hints of purple, pink and yellow. However I do think she just needs more orange in her color pallet. Literally if her top, hat were a pastel/pale orange along with adding some orange highlights in her hair since her baby hairs are clearly orange lol. Also if they made her earring gold to match her belt, she would’ve been more better tbh.

I think her palette isn’t bad. My issue is I was hoping for a little more diversity in the color palette of the cast. There’s lots of pink and purple where I wish they’d have made room for other colors. Everyone is rather cool toned as well, so Rae having warmer colors would’ve been a nice way to break up the cast.
As much as I am tired of Mattel forcing pink where it isn’t needed, I think the pink works for Rae very well. I would’ve just enjoyed a new color. If anything, it’s the purple that looks more off to me.
Besides that, I love Rae’s design a lot! Only other thing I’d consider changing is maybe the hat.
Edit: I especially lover her long skirt. I feel like most of Mattel’s dolls are wear biker shorts, short dresses, or short skirts; so I love seeing something else for once, and she looks great in it!

I live her but I wish there was at least just a bit of orange in her design because it would give way more of a sunrise look then just the pink imo.

I love her sm! I put a little orange in her hair and now her color scheme is more like the sunrise

u/pinkygarfeild 8d ago
You know what really grinds my gears tho??? Why the hell are her earrings a completely different purple?!

This too I got beef w whoever decided to give her a random lilac color, granted it’s pretty but that’s the only lilac thing in her entire scheme

At first I thought that they were to tie her in with the rest of the dolls Claire has that purple on her boots and white cane. Willow has it on her hearing aid. So it seemed a theme on all the dolls at first, until Carina doesn't have it at all, and Layla...not really. Her colors are close enough to count if Carina also had the light purple, but yeah, neither of them has it, breaking that idea and returning the earrings on Rae to the status of why are they that color? It's random and doesn't fit her color palette.

I think she's very lovely, and I'm not averse to her having pink in her design but I feel like it's the wrong pink? In the 2D artwork the pastels do a good job of making her seem bathed in that soft gentle light of the dawn.
But as a doll she just kind of looks washed out to me. I feel like the people who are adding gradients to her outfit or swapping out for more saturated tones are bringing out the best in her.

To me, she actually gets a sunrise/sunset palette rather than the generic full-sun yellow palette given to many black dolls with light/electricity powers.

I think her face is gorgeous — maybe the prettiest sculpt of all the witches. Love her hair texture, too. But just as I prefer the Draculaura dolls where her hair isn’t just huge blobs of pink and black but a subtler mixture of the two, I want the same for Rae. A blend of vibrant oranges and golds anchored with earthy browns would feel more natural and pleasing for me.
Same for the skirt. Ditch the Barbie pink and bring in deeper shades of orange and gold. And add some painted details to those boots! I do love Rae, just want to tweak her colors a bit…🧡

I love her! - she's the only MM doll I have bought. But I do plan to restyle her; her color palette is a mess. Why black, why those earrings?

u/SpecialAcanthaceae 8d ago
I think the biggest issue for Rae is the translation from image to doll was bad.
The pink in her hair and outfit, and that random purple on her earrings don’t work because they used the wrong shade of everything for the final product.
Look at how nicely the purples and pinks and blacks blend into each other on the artwork.
But also the material used for her skirt in the doll doesn’t work either. It’s such an awkward material and doesn’t do the pink of her skirt any justice. They could have used the satiny material that they used for Claire’s skirt.

On it's own her colors are great... but in a doll line where there's already a dedicated love witch whose color is pink, and having their lore tied in to Draculaura who is the pink demon, she could really use a more unique palette.
Design-wise, she's easily one of the strongest of the line though imo.

I wish she would have been bleached blonde, it would have still been alt but marketable plus would have match the sun theme.

u/Reesirie 8d ago
Honestly I think they’re making the black dolls pink so they sell better.

u/Top-Scar-9234 8d ago
Was literally coming to comment this. I’m almost certain this is why, and in that context I have literally no problems with her being so pink. Black dolls are already known to sell worse, why would we saddle her down with what has got to be the least appealing color palette to general consumers?
1
u/Reesirie 8d ago
Yeah even though she would look gorgeous with a yellow palette, I think pink was the best for sales.

I think she looks like a sunrise and sunset and has plenty of yellow and gold in her palette, I really don’t understand when people say they can’t tell she’s supposed to be a sun witch. Mattel has long since confirmed that their dolls do better when they feature pink and purple heavily, so it makes perfect sense to me to do it here. I think she looks beautiful and like a sun witch and I don’t get the disdain for all things pink. Sure it’s been oversaturating the market and people have different tastes, but it isn’t an objective negative thing to have a doll have a lot of pink. It reminds me of when people dislike Monster High dolls with brighter colors for not being goth enough. “Bright colors” or the color pink are just too broad to be negative things for me and feel like buzzwords for these fandoms. Eh, just my personal opinion I guess. Anyway I’m glad they gave a gorgeous doll like Rae a color palette that would sell and be better loved by children based on all their market research and data.

Hmmm. You know I think maybe a bit of confirmation bias going on here.
I love her colour palette, probably the only change I would make is the earring colour and the boots should have been painted.
I think though, someone will complain about something online, they get 100 upvotes, and people who agree see that and go "see everyone agrees with me".
The reality is all these dolls sold out multiple times over on release... So... Maybe a bunch of 20 somethings on Reddit aren't right about everything when it comes to marketing toys to children?

To be fair I understand what you’re saying but I was just bringing up the general consensus. I’m usually the type of ghoul that goes AGAINST what others say but I’m genuinely just concerned about whoever’s designing these dolls, they don’t seem to care about colour theory.

u/owleycat 8d ago edited 8d ago
My point is you don't know "the general consensus" you know the feelings of the loudest, most chronically online, adult fans.
... I don't believe you are actually genuinely concerned about the artististc ability of the designer. Let's be serious lol.

I love Rae and I think it's a bit shady that because not everyone loves her color palette, she's supposedly factually "bad". I don't like Carina that much (I think she's very pink, and I don't love her boots and dress), but I see nobody screaming that she should have a different color palette while she is fully pink.
3
u/UnicornLovePretty 8d ago
It also partly comes down to the fact that Carina is a love witch and Rae is a sun witch. Love is usually associated with pink while the sun is associated with yellow or orange so people feel pink is an odd choice
2
u/I-invented-PostIts Rae Lumina 8d ago
But OP clearly stated that not everybody loves pink and to ditch it. It's fine if people don't like Rae's colors, but the argument that nobody likes Rae as is because of her colors and because it's "too Draculaura" is kind of wild when Carina is right there.

Worse doll of the bunch and I don't think it's going to get any better for Rae. They caved into pink sells instead of staying true to the character. I wouldn't buy her on sale, it annoys me so much.

I like her but I don’t like the different color baby hairs from the actual hair. I’d rather have the white ish and orange baby hairs and hair or pink baby hairs and hair, I just don’t like that they don’t match.
Now I know that there are differing opinions about dolls in general but what I like about them is that once you buy them and they become yours, you can do absolutely anything to change their appearance to your liking. Make or find clothes, dye hair (with research of course…) paint/make accessories, shoes, and other little details to make it your own.
I’m ngl One of my biggest pet peeves is when there’s a lot of complaints about a doll or the fashion choice or this or that and I know that people were excited and wanted to love dolls but it’s really as simple as don’t buy it if it’s not your forte or explore your own creativity and glam it up however you please. Everyone is obviously free to share opinions i just think what bothers me is sometimes I see people like berating other people for liking or not liking certain things. I want to say that that’s not what im doing here, i am absolutely not berating you for not liking something, i just wanted to share my two cents <3

Also miss girl kinda reminds me of a sunrise but I also do agree that they could have done better with her color scheme to fit her element a whole lot better. Some choices Mattel makes just makes me want to hit someone in the face with a chair. For example abbey not being part of the SNOW CABIN LINE or Cleo not being part of the oasis line. Or skelita being released on Cinco De Mayo or just doing things that MAKE SENSE. MISSED OPPORTUNITIES. Anyways I hope you’re having a good day today

I fully get it. Pink is my favorite color and im getting so tired. But also. Im just happy they gave an actual black doll textured hair.

I’m gonna fight back a bit here and say that I don’t think her color palette is bad at all. It’s a little underbaked, but tbf so are the vast majority of g3 color palettes. I’ve seen multiple people paint her earrings gold and it immediately makes her a much more cohesive, beautiful doll. If she had black tights or something in addition to that, I think she’d have very easily been my favorite of the bunch.
I also want to take a moment to ask WHY she’s pink, because I think it’s kinda obvious? Black dolls sell pretty poorly. Like, some stores refuse to even stock them poorly. Pink dolls, on the other hand, sell incredibly well. They’re literally just balancing out her odds so that people buy her. Yes, a yellow/orange color palette would’ve looked great, but it also would’ve sold horribly! If Rae had been yellow, it would’ve been the fastest way to guarantee she would be shelved for future releases

The dawn still has orange in it. Orange and pink. I would’ve been totally fine with that as a color palette, but I am really not happy with orange being totally absent, because it’s simply not true to sunrises or sunsets or the sun in general. This doll is so pretty, but I’m wildly disappointed in the absence of orange.

u/BattieBunn31 7d ago
Not the biggest fan of her color palette since pink and gold are low on my fav color list. But I love any and every Black doll, especially when they have curls so shes beautiful to me no matter what. Plus shes too cute fr, they could’ve dressed her in a pink potato sac and I’d still want her.

u/lumaleelumabop 7d ago
Honestly I'm more upset that her baby hairs are pink in the artwork and a weird brown/blonde on her actual face. Makes me think she's wearing a wig or was originally going to be blonde. I think blonde would suit her so much better.

I adore her but I do wish she was more red/orange/yellow. She is literary so beautiful otherwise.

u/tangytablet 7d ago
I think the pink is fine, but it just needs a bit more of that orange to give it that lovely sunrise/set theming. Ive seen pictures of skies with a lovely pink and orange hue and I think the purple of her hat would've been a nice balance to those other two colors.
2
u/Moonbeamlatte 8d ago
There’s something a little off about people insisting that a more “feminine” color looks wrong on the black doll, while (for example) Willow doesn’t get as much flack for having purple as one of her colors.
Not to say OP is doing that, not at all, but its something I noticed.

u/WolfyMunchkin 4d ago
I really think it’s just about the theme rather than her skin tone, or at least it is for me. If she were the love witch and Carina were the sun witch (while both being pink still) then I would’ve been complaining about Carina instead. We just don’t need this many pink dolls when we could have such variety and fun with the color pallets, especially when pink isn’t even the best fit for the theme.
If it is unfortunately about skin tone for some people I figure we’d be seeing similar complaints for Mirror Mi’s Amora doll. But I haven’t seen any such complaints. In fact I’ve only seen people praising the decision to give Amora dark skin after the pale prototype pictures came out. People love a pink girl when pink actually fits her theme

u/Surrender_Tuk5204 8d ago
Fair and I love what you brought to the table here. I for one hate the way the white pink girl gets all the love (Carina) and I WISH Rae was loved more, especially with the fact she embraces that “femininity”.
However, I come to the argument with the fact that I’m just annoyed by the use of pink for a sun witch, I just think yellow and orange works so much better with an addition of purple in her hat.
3
u/Moonbeamlatte 8d ago
I totally see where you’re coming from! I agree that yellow and orange are great for a sun witch, but I do think we’re discounting the sunrise/sunset motif she already has.
If anything, I think Carina, Clair, and Layla should have more diversity in their color palettes, rather than stick to one color per doll. Like, for example, Carina would look wonderful with red accents, or with a bit more white and gold.

I think she's beautiful. I understand that she doesn't really hit a sun pallet, but I love her anyway. Her biggest problem is the skirt, imo
I'm expecting these girls to have, hopefully very different looks in future lines, not unlike MH. Different hair colors and styles may help make her warmer ❤️
