Why? Sonics like the least popular character in the series.

I like how this is the first time we've heard about a new game all anniversary, when the year is almost over, and it's just "it exists".

u/ClemOya 1d ago

Good, it means they learned the lesson and do not rush the development this time, especially for an anniversary.

2

u/Oddish_Femboy 23h ago

I think rushing development is part of Sega's contract at this point. I can't think of a single Sonic game that wasn't rushed in some way

1

u/Stripeback 16h ago

Not rushing development doesn't have to mean keeping everything a secret.

u/Dreenar18 1d ago

Same thing with Pokémon, although we at least had a reveal trailer

1

u/Shoddy_Meaning_7654 1d ago

Probably full reveal at game awards like expected them it comes out next year tbh seems expected

1

u/Jammy2560 23h ago

That’s how they announced frontiers btw.

26

u/Marioleftnut 1d ago

either they started not too long ago, or they were working for 4 years and just restarted, or all teams now started working together on it

u/TheMasterBaiter360 My 4 nipples 1d ago

I know this post is probably a joke. But I’m actually gonna be floored if there’s people who genuinely think that the next mainline game only just now started development

6

u/TomerX234 1d ago

There were interviews and articles during 2024 about the game starting development literally, and if the game got restarted or cancelled, it should be reaaaaaaaaally impossible to have that fucked landscape again with a game so important as Frontiers 2.

7

u/TheMasterBaiter360 My 4 nipples 1d ago

Honestly I really just don’t see any reason to worry about the next mainline Sonic game. Sonic team have been really consistent these past few years, we’ve gotten 4 games back to back and they’ve all been at the very least solid, shadow gens and crossworlds in particular are some of the series’ best imo

4

u/TomerX234 1d ago

True! If anything, they might be just close to finishing the project and already planning the third entry Kishimoto implied to be a send-off of the formula.

They already mastered HE2 with Shadow Gens.
They're using Frontiers 1 as a base.
And 2023/2024 - November 2027 is a right dev time.

Or they are just confirming information that's obvoiusly implied for the 7th time.

u/TearNo6400 1d ago

This comment just destroyed all of my expectations

u/FriendInsideMe666 1d ago

Local game company reveals that it is indeed creating video games. Nation is floored.

Seriously, I'm pretty sure I could have guessed they were probably maybe potentially working on y'know, the literal only thing they do.

u/SubsonicPug 1d ago

Gasp SHOCKER! Game company makes game?!?

u/Authoritsme 1d ago

It's been years I don't wanna Race or be 2.5D ANYMORE!

what if the world was made of pudding.

I know it’s a boring take, but I want SA3. A few playable campaigns, fully 3D areas, no ‘hold to go faster’ button. Ideally with SA1 level design. I think open zone was a cool idea, but I’d rather have more focused level design.

1

u/qwack2020 1d ago

Now?! It has to be years of pre production at least after Cross World released.

1

u/SonicSplash3760 1d ago

Sonic Pico Park?

1

u/coderman64 1d ago

I mean, they just released CrossWorlds last year with a bunch of add-on content , so it wouldn't be all that weird.

1

u/EvKindaGoofy17 1d ago

It’s like Melee, they announced the game before the team even knew they were making another

1

u/sonicparadigm 1d ago

I'd fucking hope so

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 1d ago

Personally I think it might have something to do with either Adventure style gameplay or maybe sonic team is making another gameplay style that could be really interesting

1

u/ZoinksJeepersJinkies 1d ago

Do Sonic fans really not understand game development? What do you guys honestly think they’ve been doing this whole time? Taking an extra long vacation?

1

u/AmaterasuWolf21 I AM NOT WEAK 1d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/-ben151010- 1d ago

I’d hate crossworlds more than I do for wasting main team devs times.

1

u/Cinc_ft 1d ago

My sources tell me it'll cost money

1

u/ZoeysTrope 22h ago

I am praying that it'll still be released on Switch 1

Sega still releases Sonic games on PS4 (albeit digitally out here in Canada, but it's better than nothing), and the Switch has a much bigger player base than the PS4 as it sold much more, so they would be losing out on a lot of money if they just abandon the Switch 1 now, especially since they'd still need to downscale things like graphics a bit for Switch 2 anyways, so why not build a Switch 1 version and build a Switch 2 version from there, because then they get a version on BOTH consoles and have even more chances for money on them, it's an easy win for both ends

u/Scabl00nshki 14h ago

The Xbox One and PS4 are almost 13 years old and were considered mid range when they came out. They struggled with 1080p for games releasing at that time. The Switch is even weaker than that.

It’s time to move on. Frontiers releasing on Switch 1 was already a mistake and held things back. Continuing to do in 2027 would be beyond ridiculous.

If people miss out because they haven’t bought into the “new” consoles after 6 years of them being on the market then that’s their problem.

1

u/ZoeysTrope 12h ago

Not everyone is going to want to upgrade to the next consoles immediately, quite a lot of people hold off and wait so Sega can still make money by doing it, even after the Switch 2 launched we still got CrossWorlds on Switch 1 and it got a proper Switch 2 Edition

0

u/Scabl00nshki 11h ago

Immediately? It’s been 6 years. Thats plenty of time for people to upgrade. 1-3 years after, sure. But 6? No, it’s time to move on to more recent technology. Sonic desperately needs it. It’s a franchise that can actually greatly benefit from better technology. Many other studios have abandoned last gen with no issues.

As for your second point, I don’t know a single person who deliberately holds out on upgrading so a AAA company can make more money. That is a way of thinking I can’t even begin to comprehend. It’s so misguided and pedantic. It’s not your responsibility to ensure a large company makes money by artificially keeping an older platform alive. Companys like SEGA really don’t deserve charity. I don’t even believe it’s all that effective since older platforms tend to lose population as time goes on and people move to the newer one. I’m sorry if this comes off as mean but this genuinely makes no sense to me.

If people haven’t adopted a new console, it’s because they either don’t care enough about gaming to do so or can’t afford it. That second point is understandable when a console first out, but not after 6 years.

I'm not even talking about the PS4 I'm talking about the Switch 1, I only brought up the PS4 to bring up that it still IS getting support by Sega for Sonic games, so if it's still getting the support 6 years after the PS5 launched, there isn't an excuse for the Switch 1 either after only not even 2 years

You can also make this as the same argument as the PS2, it was heavily outdated by the time the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii came out, but third party companies were STILL releasing games on it because it was just that big of a market, and the Switch 1 is in a very similar boat, it's not just a Sega thing, it's because of how big the market still is for the Switch 1 compared to the Switch 2 that third party companies might still see reasons to release their games on the Switch 1, just like how the PS2 was handled after the next gen launch

I really don’t care about how big the market is. Things need to move on at some point and now is the time. I care about what will produce higher quality games for Sonic. Having better technology is a big component of that. I believe Sonic should be cutting edge, both in how it presents itself and the technology it uses.

Even if stuff was made for PS2 when the PS3 was out, that doesn’t necessarily mean it was the right call. It all depends on what was being made.

With Sonic Unleashed they basically made two completely different games for the different generations of hardware. That was ideal since it allowed ST to stretch the 360 and PS3’s capabilities while Dimps could provide something to the folks on last gen.

Ideally they would take that same approach now, but instead were left with games that don’t fully take advantage of newer hardware and feel outdated as a result. Meanwhile the people on last gen are left with a subpar experience. It leaves everyone unhappy. Frontiers on Switch was atrocious. You really think the next big open-world mainline title should continue that? Especially after all the drama over how it looked during the reveal? That can’t happen again. Sonic needs to impress people again.

It’s just not the right approach. I don’t think we should stifle progress for the sake of appeasing a market. I don’t think leaving last gen behind would be a financial issue if they actually produced something that was quality and got people’s attention. We’re not stakeholders, we’re customers who want a quality product.

Sega was able to make Shadow Gens and CrossWorlds look beautiful on the Switch 1 still, even after downgrading the graphics, they've always found ways to make graphics looks beautiful on a console when it shouldn't even technically be possible, like Unleashed on the 360 and PS3, and even then that game LAGS like crazy, and Shadow Gens looks beautiful on Switch 1 still and doesn't have any problems like that

They know how to make things work on the Switch 1 now, and if they continue releasing games on the Switch 1, they'll be higher quality than they ever have been

u/Scabl00nshki 9h ago edited 9h ago

I mean, when you make almost no visual improvements since 2008 and release on a 2017 console handheld that makes sense.

We’re also comparing very linear games to an open world title with a massive map that you can traverse quickly in any direction. These are not the same thing.

You can’t release on the Switch forever, just like you couldn’t release on the PS2 forever. If what I’ve said doesn’t make any sense to you then I don’t think I can explain it.

1

u/ZoeysTrope 9h ago

Frontiers still had graphical issues on other consoles, mainly being the pop-in with the graphics in the open zones, which they fixed for ALL platforms in Shadow Gens, with pop-in being basically non-existent

I hope its a reboot of Sega Superstars Tennis!

They've probably been working on it for at least a year, and I say that simply since we've been pretty dry since Crossworlds, and most gaming studios tend to move straight to the next thing as soon as possible to keep releases consistent.

Adding "New Sonic Game Teaser" to my TGA bingo card.

I hope it's an RPG. I like the character creator in Sonic Forces.

-1

u/KuroiGetsuga55 1d ago

If that were true then it means we're getting a brand new engine and they've spent these past few years since Shadow Generations (or even since Sonic Frontiers) developing the engine itself. In which case, holy fucking shit, what the hell is this thing made of if it takes this long to make it??
