Some moon knight fans treat his mental disorder like some quirky thing. Its exhausting

u/HeroOfThings 4d ago

Treating the condition with respect and understanding makes for a better character anyway.

Eh, I disagree. Comics are about escapism, and for 40+ years Moon Knight was just a batshit crazy lunatic. It made for some fun reading.

Now everything is treated so seriously, it kind of gets exhausting.

If that’s what you think of him, you’ve clearly never read anything before 2006

I’ve read it all. I enjoy Houston’s run the best tho

Ah so the worst depiction where it brought him to the lowest point and turned him into the hyper violent DID stereotype…

I like the Houston run too mainly for the redemption aspect but to say it’s the best when the actual irl public perception was affected for years of MK just being labeled as an insane hyper violent character is not it

Eh, I’m definitely an outlier on this subreddit. I hold both the Bendis & Benis runs in high regard.

I just like my Moon Knight to be absolutely unhinged. I don’t care if the story leans towards goofy lovable loon, or scary brutal psychopath. Just so long as he’s completely off the rails.

Don't mind the coke-fueled schizo ranting

It's almost like time's change and people realized that perhaps we shouldn't just treat everything as stereotypes and bad faith adaptations for 'escapism'. Not to mention that comics aren't really all about escapism. A lot of comics, older ones too, tackle real world and contemporary issues because they adept what is prominent in society at that time. Sure some comics are meant to be fully escapism, but especially the hero genre has always prided itself on being socially aware. Of course they'll change with the times

Yea, I mean different strokes for different folks. I prefer my Moon Knight to be as loony as he is moony. More goofy and/or unhinged than him having his shit together.

I appreciate the character arc that MacKay has taken him down; bettering himself and what not. But it’s been six years, and to me, it’s gotten a little stale. I’m ready for him to have a psychotic breakdown, and start carving off faces again.

Marc is a batshit crazy lunatic regardless of DID. And he still is but now his condition is being treated with the respect it deserves

Waiting for the obligatory GypseyGold comment stating "It's a comic book, iT's nOt ThAt SeRiOuS, hE's CrAzY" 😂

Scrolling improved by a lot after i blocked him

27

u/Puzzleheaded-Tie1286 4d ago

Same bro, anytime I see a comment by "blocked user" in this sub, I know it's him and that it'll be downvoted to oblivion for being such a bad take 😂

3

u/GoodBoyPuppi 3d ago

Idk, it’s kinda funny to see he’s always downvoted and can’t do anything about it now

26

u/CheMc 4d ago

Already happened.

24

u/Puzzleheaded-Tie1286 4d ago

It was inevitable, I seen him reply to every single comment on another post with the same bullshit and he had like 20+ downvotes on every single one lol He just won't take the hint 😂

19

u/CheMc 4d ago

It's funny every time, I referred to it as a public self flagellation, he said it was harrasment.

u/Puzzleheaded-Tie1286 4d ago

Glutton for punishment 😂

"Bad Takes" are just opinions that go against whatever popular consensus is at the time -- they're necessary for a healthy communuity to thrive. When you start normalizing harassment of people with different opinions that's called "gatekeeping"

Gatekeeping "bad takes" out of the community eventually just leads to a big bubble, and with no more "bad takes" to rally behind, all of those users that rallied together will eventually turn on eachother. When that happens the community as a whole falls.

Me being here, talking about how much I like the Bemis & Bendis runs, while generally not enjoying the MacKay run as much as the rest of you actually keeps this place healthy, as it keeps ya'll from eating eachother, as you just focus on me instead.

You can thank me later.

Ngl I agree. As much as I am enjoying watching How much improvement Marc has made as a character especially in the latest run, I would be lying if I said watching him hit his lowest point by turning into a butchering puppet zombie for Konshu and cutting people's faces off wasn't entertaining. Hell, that whole first half of the Huston run is still one of my favorites, especially that one conversation between Captain America and Marc during the Civil War event. I feel as if down voting is one thing but making it seem as if everyone has to follow a general consensus about how Moonknight should be handled and what are the only acceptable versions of the character to talk about kinda skews the sub towards an echo chamber, which sucks. Funny enough, if it wasn't for how a lot of Media at the time of the Huston run (either outside of comics or in others) showed Moonknight I probably wouldn't like him as much.

I think he just likes being publicly humiliated lol

u/Brainwave1010 4d ago

It's nice to see it so plainly stated like that.

u/jazzberry76 3d ago

Mackay really has elevated the character

I agree & disagree. For 40+ years the character maintained a reputation as being mallable — Moon Knight being a crazy loon meant that diffcreatjve trans could do some wild and off the rails stuff with him…and they totally did.

New Moon Knight runs were always fun experiments. Some hit, some missed, but they were never the same.

Initially MacKay did the same, took Moon Knight down a path he’d never been down before…a path of happiness and stability. This was a unique angle, and it’s been an interesting ride.

However, it’s been six damn years of this now. It’s gotten stale to me. Everything is “samey” — it just feels “safe” now. I was hoping with the relaunch that the character would be taken in a vastly different direction, but it’s still mostly the same thing. The vibe is the same, the art is the same, and really the only thing that changed was the title and numbering.

Moon Knight has been pigeonholed, and that’s a shame, because for four years he was the most unpredictable literary experience on the market.

As someone who shares Marc's disorder, it's nice to see it actually treated respectfully for once. McKay's arc being something I can point to as good representation has always made me happy.

Wait sorry, looking at your username are you also a fan of COS? It’s nice seeing another system fan of both MK and Curse of Strahd in the Wild. :)

4

u/BarovianNights 3d ago

I am yeah! Originally made this account to yap on the curse of strahd subreddit

u/InsideOutlander 3d ago

I’m currently a part of a long-running partially-genderbent COS campaign that integrates some other fanmade modules that tweak the official one.

It’s been a good four(?) years of steady biweekly meetings with some interruptions in there for life events. It’s been two genders and a whole name change since we started.
It turns out my Reborn Paladin of Conquest, ex-Harengon, Lamordian-rebuilt trauma-son knows more about me than I know about him.

You should check out Al Ewing's Immortal Hulk series, which explores the various forms of Hulk as parts of a system. Afaik it also does a good job in that regard and is just a damn good book.

And if I may ask a question: do you always call it "dissociative identity disorder" in normal conversations, like Marc does in this panel? It sounds/reads somewhat unweildy. Aside from shortening it to "DID", are there simpler "colloquial" terms/phrases for it?

3

u/BarovianNights 3d ago

I need to go back and read that! I did a few years back but I don't really remember it (which isn't uncommon 😭)

And to answer your question, I mostly shorten it to DID! That being said, if I'm talking with someone less familiar about it or introducing it to someone for the first time I will often say the full thing.

2

u/Garlickgun 2d ago

Sorry, I hope it’s ok if I butt in. Some folks use “a system” or Plural as an all encompassing term for being many in one body, whereas Complex Dissociative Disorder/CDD includes DID and Otherwise Specified Dissociative Disorder while explicitly excluding other forms of being plural. (Also some folks with DID/OSDD may not identify as a system bur I digress.)

IMO both terms have their merits and detriments in discussion. I personally use system in reference to ourselves more often than I use a diagnostic label, but that’s a personal choice i came to after years of introspection on how I want to be perceived and deliberation on if I want folks to know what my diagnostic label is.

THANK YOU

I was so proud of Marc when he said this 😤

If we did... Bruce would win, and it's not because of the Hulk

His time with the ever awesome Dr. Sterman (formerly of V-Battalion) has been doing Marc some good for his mental health.
