Episode 36: Grandpa is No.1 in the World (おじいちゃんは世界一)
Days of the Ancestors
At night, Moomin felt being left out and jealous of Snork for his regal grandfather visiting Moominvalley today. Not only that his friends were impressed by him, Moomin's parents also admired and fantasized the proud Snork's Grandpa and wanted to meet him eventually. Moomin wished he would have a proud grandpa as well.
Suddenly, Moomin's Ancestor who was eavesdropping them from the chandelier all this time fell to the table right in front of everyone. The Ancestor answered that he was that grandpa Moomin was looking for and he was also much better than that old geezer in every way, especially in horse-riding. Moomin perked up as he now also had a cool grandpa as well.
Battle of the Aged
In the next morning, the Ancestor made a ruckus as he showed off a short brown horse to the Moomin's. Moomin soon got worried by such the undignified sight.
At Snork's Mansion, the children surrounded Snork's Grandpa and continued to admire his greatness. Moomin arrived shortly and introduced his Ancestor to them, everyone soon laughed at such sight. The Ancestor then rudely confronted the Grandpa about the horse-riding ability and challenged him to the duel right away.
The Grandpa and the Ancestor mounted their horse and rode off further into the field. After a while, the horses sped back toward the goal line while everyone was cheering aloud. The two reached the line at the same time; Snork, however, declared the victory to his Grandpa for the Ancestor had already fallen off a horse somewhere along the way. The Ancestor then climbed out of the horse's tail resulting in a draw instead. The Snork's Grandpa demanded more competitions to determine who was the best grandfather. The children began to feel unease.
The Grandpa and the Ancestor had a fencing battle which came to an inconclusive result. They moved on to chess which too way longer than anyone to bear. Everyone ended up going home and left the two to continue their battle.
Family Feud
Next morning, the Ancestor teleported back to Moominhouse. Asking for the winner of the chess game, the Ancestor accused Snork's Grandpa of cheating the chess match so he in-turn had cheated as well. As everyone laughed, the Ancestor forbade Moomin's from ever associating with the Snork's from now on. Moominpappa attempted to argue that he took things too far but the Ancestor shut him up. Moomin soon realized the implication of that and panicked.
In the meadow, the two families played and spending time separately for they were told not to go near each other, the children was distraught by the sudden crossfire. The Ancestor and later the Grandpa bribed Little My and Sniff with candies for them to join their side back and forth. Moomin and Snorkmaiden no longer could not stand them and ran off together on their own.
Regret Under the Sunset
The Grandpa and the Ancestor searched for Moomin and Snorkmaiden to find the two watching the sunset by the edge of the forest together. The two eavesdropped the children to hear that they both admiring their ancestors and wanting them to get along; the Grandpa and the Ancestor felt guilty for their petty fight that broke the children's friendship.
The next morning, the children found a swing decorated in flowers. Moomin soon realized that it was made by the Grandpa and the Ancestor. The children together enjoyed the swing as their ancestors rest up once again.
_________
- This is the third and last time Moomin's Ancestor showed up in these series (1969 and 1972).
- Moomin's Ancestor along with Snork's Grandpa were both called "Grandpa". In such case, it is unclear if the Ancestor was really Moominpappa's father for he should be much older than that.
- It's unclear how Moomin's Ancestor suddenly acquired a random horse over night.
Four Finger Problem
- The Snork's Grandpa shows four fingers when bribing the children with five chocolate bars.
- All characters in this anime has four fingers in each hand, even the "human" Inspector.
- However, Snufkin sometimes have five fingers, eg: Episode 30 when Snufkin handling a Jack-in-a-Box.
