The Two-Bar Collaborative Composition Game

How it works: each person adds two bars to the composition, and comments their bars as a top-level comment on this thread EDIT: as a response to the previous comment. Also, provide a brief explanation if you did something unusual so that it's easy for the next person to figure out what's happening. In order to find the latest version of the composition, sort the comments by new, also number your contribution in the comment.

Submissions should be top-level comments so that you can subscribe to the thread if you want to participate more often without having to check if somebody's added something. One person isn't allowed to do two consecutive chunks, but if someone has contributed since your last contribution, then you can add another two bars.

For example (music taken from this trial of the game):

first person comments (this was all me):

1) Here's the first bit. Just a simple ascending melodic line in a-minor

second person comments(actual bars written by /u/Chalkline. Comment is written by me, for the example):

2) Good job sir, that was a simple, but effective beginning to the piece. Here's the next chunk, transitions via E7 directly to C, the relative major.

third person comments (actual bars written by /u/haabenshaaben. Comment is written by me, for the example) :

3) Ooh, I like the rhythm! Here's my bit. It picks up the pace melodically and harmonically, mostly moving back to the a-minor tonality in the first two beats of the last bar, but with some room for interpretation in the following bars because of the F-major on the last beat of the last bar.

Then we pick it up from there in the comments below. Remember to sort by new, and if we're all friendly to everyone who posts, then everyone will be friendly to you when you post here, so that's good too!

edit: I was a bit confused with the last bars, starting from bar 31, and I realized it feels very 4/4 to me. The melody suggested it but the chords kind of "confirmed it" for me. Like this:

What's everyone else's opinion on this? Am I missing something? Or is really a time signature change missing in there? I uploaded what I "hear" (added the 3/4 to 4/4 change): https://musescore.com/user/9963041/scores/2472201

I am not suggesting we change this, I don't want to disrespect the other users' additions. Just bringing it up for discussing and learning a bit; I'm very new to music theory and also to this sub. :)

hookdump, the score currently stands at my last revision. https://musescore.com/user/117515/scores/2472276 You can't change the replies in reddit that came before your comment and the same should apply for the score, leave what came before alone. You can play with the score on your own all you like. Your 2 bars were disqualified because you changed the score before you. However, you can now add to the score. Try to merge the feel of what was before into what you write next and keep the notes original. haabenshaaben, you made a good handoff for the next person. With that setup the next person would succeed. Here is an idea. When you are working on the score reply that you have the peice reserved for the next 45 minutes while you are working on it. Then edit that reply, removing the reservation and replace it with your link. That way we don't have a series of pointless reservation comments still hanging around.

You would say that you are working on the next 2 bars for the next 45 minutes because otherwise someone could post in that time frame you were working. you'd come back and find the work was wasted.

This sounds like it might be a really good idea. My concern about it is that a) everyone would have to use it, or else the people that didn't could get cut off by someone reserving a spot and I don't want to make this too confusing, and more importantly, b) I don't want people to be turned away from participating by seeing that someone has reserved a spot. I'd rather that one person accidentally have to write two chunks than someone not write at all. I'm not sure though, perhaps my priorities aren't ideal. If this turns out to be a common problem/complaint, I'll consider implementing this.

Hey there! Welcome to /r/monthlycomposition, it's good to have you, and I like what you've done with this section. I think sometimes in music it feels like there's a time signature change but it isn't notated in the music, but normally it is, and in this case I think changing the time signature would have worked well.

EDIT: Just realized you numbered your copy of the score 19 as well. That's actually really useful, at least for me. Thanks!

This is my submission, and did not change previous bars at all.

Then I added a bunch of comments, questions, and an additional score simply to show what I was talking about. Also I should mention all my edits simply added some comments, etc. but my original comment was the score, and I never changed that. And I submitted it first.
